Beat the Drum (2003)
A GREAT Movie!
What a little jewel this movie is.
Shame on the US distributors for not picking up this movie, reportedly due to the lack of a "name" US actor in the cast. If anything, it was MORE effective due to the lack of recognizable faces. It made the story the most important thing. And you CARED about these people, because they felt like the real thing, not actors playing roles.
Great cast, beautifully filmed, important story. If you aren't lucky enough to find it in a theater near you (and you probably won't) the DVD comes out in, I think, November. Run, don't walk, to buy it. You will not be disappointed.
Birth (2004)
Waste of Time...
Incredibly slow, dialogue so slow and basic and repetitious I could have written the script down in longhand as I watched the movie.
Opera scene on Kidman's face was WAY too long. I felt nothing for the child, given the total lack of energy or emotion in his performance. Frankly, I felt nothing for any of these people. The premise could have been interesting but just didn't work, the acting was not great by anyone, and, the scene when the child is in the tub and Anna matter-of- factly says that they will go away together and in 11 years you will be 21 and we'll get married... it sounded ridiculous when she said it, and it was . And, the whole wedding photographer --- was there a wedding or wasn't there-- off to stand in the ocean scene--sorry, I wasted my time and money on renting this one.
