Miami Vice (2006)
The vice here is the mediocrity
After reading a few reviews on some well known film sites i thought this was going to be great...but the totally opposite was true. What a huge disappointment. The plot was going from one place to another and at times just gave you one big headache. Poor red herrings and over the top sub plots were shown to us as believable (I think not!). The film was just one sub plot over another and a zig zag of labyrinthian proportions of where the film should be going. And how about this for corny dialogue...'probability is like gravity...'? er..yeah, like dog crap and cheese are identicial???
It seems Michael Mann is a one (HEAT) hit wonder, and simply adding a 10 minute gunfight lifted straight out of HEAT at the end of the movie is not going to save it.
If you want to watch a decent cop thriller check out the little known 'Dirty' a superior film by a lesser known director.
Avoid this Miami VICE and buy the TV series instead.
Superman Returns (2006)
A disappointingly bland return to a solid franchise
Superman is meant to be a fun action filled action orientated family movie...but Bryan Singer's version is a ballad of sappy soap opera and cheesy poorly edited sequences which are simply lifted out of the original Christopher Reeve film. Brandon Routh was surprisingly good, Kevin Spacey was average and the rest were just out of their depth. Ultimately this film has been ruined by Bryan Singer. I found the film to be boring, snail paced, uneventful and limited in action sequences.
I watched this film with my wife and two children who have enjoyed watching the superman DVDs. However they too left the cinema half asleep. Would i buy this film on DVD?....NO! If there was one theme that ran through this film it was 'BLAND'. Superman lands and takes off so slowly as though he thought he had speed laser guns aimed at him. A relatively bland amount of action and a bland/nil amount of sexual tension between Lois and Superman. This superman was vulnerable, with a bit of homosexual undertones. (the way he just hovers in mid air like a butterfly!) A Burgundy cape with no insignia, a small 'S' on his chest as though size doesn't matter. I am afraid Bryan Singer has produced a truly anal Superman movie and the only hope for this franchise is to rope in a new director.
Give it to Richard Donner.
A History of Violence (2005)
A film with TRUE GRIT
As a kid i grew up with the video rental influences of the late 70's early 80's such as Death Wish, Dirty Harry, Taxi Driver etc. Very few recent films have manged to capture that style. U-TURN is perhaps one that comes close.
A History of Violence manages to capture that ambiance. The brooding atmosphere with that lingering of menace throughout the film ultimately leads to explosions of sex, violence and uber-cool.
I think Ed Harris' character sums up this movie perfectly with his line: 'Let's get going before Joey here, goes Dirty Harry on us'
A film lovers delight!!!!!!!
Crash (1996)
surrealistic journey, but difficult transition to the big screen
I read the script with an intro by Cronenberg where he states that his agent didn't want him to make this film. Subsequently he fired his agent! Cronenberg is an artist and not a film maker. Celluloid is his canvas.
If you approach his work as you would when viewing an art piece you may be pleasantly surprised and find all the little connotations that when interpreted correctly scream out. I agree CRASH is difficult to watch through the eyes of a movie goer but as someone who appreciates art you are in for a treat.
Filmwise, it suffers due to the cut out of scenes between Ballard and his secretary and scenes which are in the script but were not filmed. But having read the script i could forgive these omissions.
Performances were excellent especially given the demands of the script and am amazed at the cast assembled.
In respect of the film...what is the message...what is the philosophy...what was the point...I interpreted it as the creation and destruction of relationships through the use of cars as an extension of our outer self. What survives (our soul) is liberated through actual survival or death.
In other underlying messages... you are what you drive...do we really know what our identity is if we rely so heavily on materialist goods to help shape our identity around.
It's purely interpretation's so watch,see and envision.
