Snakes on a Plane (2006)
Take it for what it is....
This is NOT 'Battleship Potemkin' or 'Citizen Kane' it's a good old fashioned B flick, a mule dressed up in horses harness with a big name star, plenty of special effects, a stock plot and the usual cast of very predictable characters who have been in every disaster movie since 'Lifeboat' A flash in the pan summer screamer, enjoy it for what it IS and you won't be disappointed. Will it become a cult film? Perhaps. Certainly not on the order of 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' with midnight showings for the next 20 years but it will become a staple in everyones DVD library. Plunk down your 6 bucks and get away from reality for 100 minutes.
Wind Across the Everglades (1958)
A must see..if you can find it
Taken in the context of the 'feather' craze that almost decimated the birds of the Everglades at the turn of the 20th Century, this movie -almost- presaged Rachel Carson and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas. A moving depiction of the River Of Grass, those who lived WITH it and those who tried to DESTROY it. Christopher Plummer and Burl Ives gave this movie a depth that seemed effortless It deserved a wider release and I can only hope it will be issued as a DVD. It was based upon a true story of a federal wildlife ranger. The Manchineal trees have been displaced by Malelucas, what a pity, I would rope all the inhabitants of South Florida to the formers caustic trunks and enjoy he howls of pain
The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970)
I saw it in 1970 and it has haunted me ever since....
A western so unlike anything else of the genre I was accustomed to. When it magically reappeared on disc I was skeptical..would it stand the test of time? It HAS and more. An overlooked gem, a second feature (when there WERE second features) addendum which NOW with release of the disc should take it's place, rightfully, as one of the outstanding works of Sam Peckinpah. A brilliant and troubled director, each of his movies reveals more of himself As if peeling an onion. He has been stigmatized by some for the violence of The Wild Bunch and by others for the 'tricks' of fast action and winking dollar bills of Cable Hogue. The total of his work is more than the sum of it's parts.. however I do believe this movie will serve as his epitaph as it is rediscovered. Listen to the theme song and understand.
