Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Justify
Yes, in terms of movie making this in most ways is sub-pathetic. I thought I'd write some more specific comments that differ / elaborate on elements.
-The camera work in the first 1/3rd is not cinema quality... face shots... c'mon!
-Personally, I have no "specific problems" with Ridley. I could even accept Finn... less half the corn. But i've always found Isaacs not suitable... Personal taste perhaps but I really don't like him in "masculine" / non intellectual roles.
-I felt this movies "spirit" ( well some key elements ) actually got closest to touching that of the originals... and despite the horrific editing and sub plots... that someone deep down needs to be recognized for being brave.
-Tho' I love Leia... what became of her hear was cheap. And the Ray light sabre merry go round lost any or all of it's effect by how loosely it was incorporated.
-Driver in the other films was so trivialised ... I personally found his character hard to invest in. I felt in this movie... They finally treated that character with more respect... and he worked for me in this.
I gave it three.. and it is a truly shoddy piece of film making. But I had to be honest and write this because despite all it's flaws... there were some positive aspects.
Boulevard (2014)
subtly powerful
A subtle, yet powerful film... themes of fidelity, need, conflict and obligation resonate with a deep steady aching beat.
Sadly, it is not gregarious nor sensationalist as many similar themed predecessors, so it's ratings will suffer... It's a film about life and it's strong... not showy.
It's brave...
Snowtown (2011)
masterpiece
I've seen this movie a few times over the years, the first time excellent although a little confronting, the next few times some of the sub-plot was not so strong but still very good.
the thing is... you can take away most of the story and extreme violence and it's nothing short of a masterpiece. how it can be sitting rated 6.7 here is an utter insult as it rates right up there with most of the best "foreign" films.
Hotel Mumbai (2018)
something is missing
Great movie. i'm unable to put my finger on it but there is something hollow about it. on a production level... it's not B grade, the writing, acting, camera... are all fine... yet the immediacy is not there...
perhaps they tried to over characterise... and part of that was a deliberate choice to over sanitize... shallow and distant. not such a problem for a first viewing... but it's not a movie you could re-watch and feel a second time.
The Gateway (2018)
decent but lazy end
Decent, but taking the easy way out bringing the story to resolution is such a shame. stop it 60-70% through and you'll wont ruin the possibilities.
Sweet Country (2017)
almost brilliant
Originality in metaphoric realism, tarentino-eqsue ending excluded. this film paints a vivid image of a country, it's landscape and it's people.
the writing stands glaringly alongside the strong performances, and from a storytelling point of view, deserves due credit for it's achievements.
Lucy in the Sky (2019)
in essence this is a good movie
In essence this is a good if not very good movie.
it is not an "entertain me" movie... but rather an introspective commentary that unfortunately, few will be able to identify with on a level to fully grasp the bolt statements and nuances it has to offer.
if you looking to be entertained... then don't expect much... if you love sociology then it IS worth seeing... as it delivers a strong message, via a unique narrative.
Judy (2019)
Deeper than the Abyss
Admittedly i've always been partial to Renee Zellweger... and her performance is impossible to overstate...
What makes this movie truly remarkable, is how it captivates the viewer's heart and intellect throughout...
I struggle to think of a film that transposes such a constant, deep, human connection. Normally period films are difficult for me, yet this manages to deliver raw reality, as if it were in front of you.
Eternal thanks to Judy and Judy.
Dark Waters (2019)
Understated Quality
Impressive performances all round and cliche free story deliver a solid and moving story. Anne Hathaway really steps it up a notch. Kudos to the director... and all involved with the production.
If anything, some deeper revelations and exposure into the skullduggery by corporate and governmental steak holders would have benefited the story in my opinion, although given the facts that are available and the key theme being impact to victims, this is understandable.
Well done.
Small Town Crime (2017)
Artistry not originality
Interesting film. 10 second into this movie a strange feeling swept over me..... It was buzzing with a Tarentino vibe though the synopsis ( plot ) and scene told me otherwise.
I had to leave a comment here because what i'm left with after the experience of this film is some sort of quasi awe/shock with just how precise the writer / director (s) were in executing such a succinct study in film making.
I can't help feeling that behind the scenes, there are some missing architects unknown......... something....... catalytic.
Pace, camerawork and people combine with score, direction and set to culminate in something any aspiring film maker should study and aspire to.
To the creators, only some very minor tweaks in the crescendos, both visually and cognitively would have turned this symphony to the absolute high that it was capable of.
I look forward to seeing future...... message making? work :)
Thanks!
