Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)
Didn't Get It
I'm not sure what all the talk was about this movie. I love the Coen Brothers, but I just didn't get this one. I kept waiting for it to click, like so many of their movies, but this one I just kept waiting and waiting and it never clicked. Maybe it was over my head? Maybe I need to watch it again, but I really don't want to.
Short Term 12 (2013)
So Good
This was a super simple story that was told perfectly. Brie Larson was outstanding. There's nothing special about this movie. It feels very low budget and basic, but in the best possible way. It's true and real and touching and heartfelt. I was very surprised I enjoyed this movie as much as I did.
The Basketball Diaries (1995)
Disturbing Brilliance
Absolutely loved this movie. This might be Leo at his best (sans Gilbert Grape). Easily could have turned into an after school special, but Kalvert walks this line brilliantly. In addition to Leo, this might be Wahlberg's best performance (sans Boogie Nights). It's a dark disturbing tale, that is told through bold and authentic performances.
Night Owls (2015)
Please Give Me My Money Back
Saw this for free on Netflix and want my money back. After twenty minutes, I wanted to turn it off, but thought it has to get better. After another twenty minutes, I almost fell asleep, but thought there must be something coming. Another 20 minutes later, nothing had come. Another twenty minutes later, I hated myself for not bailing after the first twenty minutes.
Raising Arizona (1987)
Coen Brothers at Their Best
This might be the best movie the Coen Brothers have done, and they have done some great ones. This is definitely Nick Cage's best movie, and he has done some really bad ones, this is not one of them. The Coen Brothers walk the line of humor and darkness so brilliantly. This might be the darkest story they have told, but is probably one of the lighter comedies they have done. In reality this is a story of a child kidnapping by a pathetic ex-con who can't do anything right, but in typical Coen Brother's fashion, it feels absolutely light hearted.
Room (2015)
Wonderful
I remember seeing Brie Larson in a little movie called Short Term 12 and thinking this was a star in the making. She was absolutely brilliant in this movie. Combined with Abrahamson's strong direction, this movie was gripping from start to finish. So great to see a film at this budget level achieve so many deserved accolades.
