Stockholm, Pennsylvania (2015)
disappointing
expectation is really a trap. you either meet it, exceed it, or get something far lower than it. well, I had expectation on this movie. first, because Saoirse Ronan is one of my favorite actresses. I watched her in "The Lovely Bones" and after that movie, I always see her as someone who's mysterious. second, I watched "Room" before this, and I heard this movie has similar plot with it, so I tried. I liked Room, good enough for me. so I thought maybe this time it'll be even better.
but, what a shame. this movie couldn't meet my expectation. nice story, but poor way of presenting it. I was anticipating "something" to happen the entire movie but a few minutes left before it ended, nothing happened. and I was sad because I didn't get whatever it was I was hoping to get.
the whole time, it felt like the movie didn't go anywhere. it made me questioning, what was actually the story here? Leia (or Leanne)'s life when she was with Ben? or her recovery? she didn't recover or anything, yet there was also nothing clear about her life when she was with Ben. only a few cuts, but still couldn't depict what actually happened in the "basement". I couldn't even grasp what was happening between her and her biological mom. it was like the movie was actually longer than it is now, but they cut it into cuts for whatever reason it is.
not gonna recommend this to people, but I'd give 4 out of 10 for at least captivating me with the fresh story-line.
He's Just Not That Into You (2009)
enjoyable but missing something
I personally enjoyed this movie and I kinda can relate to Gigi playing guessing games with "signals" inside her head. I love how it's presented to the audience, even though I somehow still feel kinda odd because this movie was like based on stereotypes between the "he" and the "she" (and what's good is that I see it was also breaking the stereotypes, "you're the rule or the exception".
What makes feel kinda strange about this movie and decided to give it 7 out of 10 because I feel like there's still a plot-hole here. All of the sudden, Neil wanted to marry Beth after 7 years into the relationship and thinking it's enough to make them happy, Alex decided he fell in love with Gigi after kind of ignoring her after his party, Anna "dumped" Ben and slept with Conor in the same day (ya didn't even show how she was when she heard Ben and Janine having sex behind the door, would've been better if you did). It's just feel very odd to see, maybe kinda rushed too, not only because it didn't show much about the process of these people changing their point of view but also because from the very beginning there were no "signs" that could've been caught by the audience if you even never planned to show the process.
Especially the Alex/Gigi part because in all honesty if we're playing the "signals" here, Alex never seemed to put interest in Gigi as more than just friends. I knew they were gonna end up together, but before Gigi went frontal in his apartment, the movie never showed us how Alex caught himself being into Gigi. Alex himself might have been stupid for not realizing it but the movie didn't show what was there to be realized, as there were no signs shown of Alex actually feeling he has something for Gigi.
But a really enjoyable watch, would definitely recommend to people!
