Ma mère (2004)
Depravity only exceeded by its stupidity
There are many films which focus on the depraved side of human nature that while disturbing are still examples of excellent cinema. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Bad Lieutenant are two titles that come to mind. While those movies showed depravity at its worst, they had elements critical to any good movie:
- Good writing and a story - Good acting - Good cinematography
Ma Mere has none of these. The characters are not remotely believable, there is very little in terms of story/plot, the writing is not compelling, and the cinematography is amateurish. The entire film hinges on a sequence of pornographic episodes, none of which are remotely erotic but rather a form of forced voyeurism designed to make the viewer ill.
At the end of the movie, (if you make it that far), I was left wondering why I had watched it, which requires the further question of why this movie was made in the first place.
Page Eight (2011)
really bad
What a shame considering the great cast that this piece falls so flat. The two conspiracies unearthed by the hero are neither earth shattering nor dramatic, but rather are politically correct drivel that likely even a radical liberal would find dull. If you survive these revelations, you will witness a totally implausible ending.
What a good cast wasted. The acting direction here seemed to be give the actors Thorazine before each performance, a bad idea for Bill Nigh. I think perhaps the uninspired plot likely affected their performances, some of which were outright unconvincing line reading.
If you want a good spy thriller, put in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy or Smiley's People.
Way of the Vampire (2005)
Another gem in the long line of the Way Of series
While no "Way of the Teamsters" (the better prequel in this trillogy) this film offers a cinematic expose into the dark and gloomy world the undead.
I wont spoil the many plot twists, many of which were hard to follow, especially since I saw the movie dubbed in Turkish while recovering from lasic eye surgery. However, you won't be disappointed with cliché contemporary romantasisms of secret populations of super powered beings living side by side of modern civillization locked in a perpetual war of which the mundane humans are mostly unaware except for some secret fraternal organization dedicated to eradication of the supernatural.
I recommend this movie for any serious VHS collection.
AVH: Alien vs. Hunter (2007)
Shockingly provocative in our post 9/11 world
What a brilliant feat of artistry.
The acting, direction, and writing is unparalleled.
Not to mention, that dog was amazing. I look forward to seeing more films with him.
While, no Jaws 4, Shmanahanfarfenugen is close to something truly special here.
You really get the feeling you are on a cruise ship being pulled by Alaskan sled dogs.
Shooting in black and white video gives a real sense of the period especially with the Journey soundtrack crackling in the background.
I am not sure the mime moves were correctly translated in the subtitles. A subtle flaw in an otherwise perfect film.
Jaws: The Revenge (1987)
Worst Movie of All Time
I'm not sure what is worse: The Ellen Brody Character? Mario Van Peebles haunting attempt at a rasta accent? The foam shark? The fact that the shark swims 1000 miles for revenge? The shark eats a plane? Conch migrate in formation? She spears the shark which then explodes with the bow of a sailboat??? They fly off into the sunset at the end in the plane that was just destroyed one scene earlier? Let's face it. This is the worst movie of all time, especially considering that it stars Michael Cane and derives from the original Jaws, which all in all was a good movie. Jaws 4 The Revenge should be celebrated and praised for its badness. One could ask how much worse this movie could be...
None worse.
