Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)
Anthony Burgess subtitles
Watched this many years ago and must try to watch again one rainy afternoon. Great acting and direction but the thing that is beautiful about this film is the way the subtitles add so much to the enjoyment of the piece. From memory; these were done by the great writer Anthony Burgess which just goes to show what a brilliant writer he was
Don't Look Now (1973)
Walking home made me nervous
I only got round to watching this film in the old Cambridge Arts Cinema around 1981 at a 11pm show. Those were the days when you could smoke in the cinema; and the first ever Cambridge Film Festival had begun. I loved this film; its ambiguity; the setting the legendary love making scene; but the scary bits stuck with me on the walk home and I was never more relieved to tun the key in my front door and close it behind me.
Stardust Memories (1980)
My favourite Woody Allen Film
I remember when this first came out; after the brilliant mid 70's period of Allen - Annie Hall and Manhattan. At the time it was panned by a number of critics; but even back then I thought it was one of the true classics of Allen. I continue to watch it every couple of years - usually on one of those mid week afternoons when you've skived off work and just want to escape into the mind of someone else. Why are we all here; what is the point of anything and why cant we just make some funny films like we used to
Transparent (2014)
Excellent series
Have sped through the episodes of this series as they were a joy to watch. Tambor is brilliant in the lead role and the soundtracks for each series have been great too. Bite sized chunks of great television that cover much more than transgender issues. The writing and direction are spot on.
Shame (2011)
Brilliant Film
Having watched this film a few times now; it continues to impress both with the outstanding acting of the two lead characters; and the brilliant direction.
Addiction; and how its causes lay somewhere in our pasts; and the Conradian wail of The Horror The Horror. We are not bad people ; we just come from a bad place. Even redemption or self realization is only fleeting.
