No Country for Old Men (2007)
By men for men
I know this is an awarded and beloved movie. Well, it had interesting points, some clever dialogues and moral lessons - but mainly - to me, it was boring honestly. My attention was lost as often as it is when I watch lectures remotely. The movie just didn't grab the attention and I jumped off the couch a few times and even stoped the movie to watch the last half on another day. It was slow. I had no connection to the characters so I didn't care what happens to them next. I watched this film because it has been said to have one of the most realistic psychopath characters. I also heard it's a great movie.
Some things that bothered me. Although my attitude lightened up partly when I saw the ending. Watching the movie, I was certain that there is no women in prominent positions in the making of this film. 50 % of the world population is women. I checked the Wikipedia article of this movie, and100 % of the most prominent creators of this film, listed on the side widget of Wikipedia, are men.
The image the movie gives on men is primarily cold, emotionless, protective, sex-driven, violent, active agents - as women are caring, loving, passive, worrying, nagging. This goes especially to the huntsman and his wife. It felt like the movie makers don't see the woman's perspective - how it would be to be left with no explanation by a man who shows no emotions and simply expects his wife to wait for him, although she can't be certain if the wait would ever be over. The man is shown as heroic, active and emotionless. All the huntsman's wife does with her life, is to wait for her man to come home and to worry over him. This viewpoint was luckily questioned in a few occasion; as in her intro, she replies "big talk" to her husband, and also, at her last scene where she behaves bravely and cleverly. Maybe I was too hard of the movie at the beginning? The ending revealed that the couple was supposed to look like "a regular backcountry couple". It's just that the world is full of movies with the similar handicap.
The sheriff at least has some emotions. The feeling the movie left me is still kinda "made by men, for men".
Pluses
+ not predictable and the plot was somewhat original, even if the characters weren't
+ some fun dialogues
+ some deeper moral lessons and clever thoughts.
Queen of the South (2016)
People seem to mix this with la Reina del Sur
Queen of the South is the best series in Netflix. It's simply captivating. If you like strong female characters, watch it.
I guess the reviews here are so poor because of the other series la Reina del Sur that is based to the same book, but a cheap version compaired to this one.
Full Out (2015)
I started gymnastics because of this movie
I watched this movie at the age of 24. Three days latter, I was on my first ever gymnastics class. Now, a couple of years latter, and insanely more skilled and fit, I can only recommend to check out this movie. Pay attention to how she basically fies on the bars, and if the movie turns too boring, perhaps google "adult gymnastics *your city*" on your mobile and make a better movie of your own life (without the accident please).
Honestly, the movie is not amazing. The acting is sometimes poor and the story a bit slow but it has some good parts too. I love the speed from the gymnastics parts, ofc.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Entertaining but annoying logical failures
Entertaining, and good characters but all the logical paradoxes annoy. It's nearly impossible to avoid paradoxes and logical traps in time travelling anyway. The most odd example, is at the second season, when Five scrolls timeline backwards second by second. Why isn't he a copy of himself like in other times that he/anyone timetravels to the past? Makes no sense.
Anyway, they probably would have all already prevented themselves from being born at many moments, which again would create a paradox. A good thing is that the series makes fun of that with the idea of the "paradox psychosis".
