The Menu (2022)
90s thriller tv movie with a nice wrapping
I get that it's such an easy recipe to have a great cast and build a film around a psychopath that is..... sad about the capitalist world we live on. How original!!! But wait, maybe there is a twist? Nope. Exactly what you know in the middle is what happens in the end. It's boring with twists of sadistic porn, done to death. Predictable and not funny. Honestly one of the worst hyped movies I have seen in a while. P. S- why that all the cults nowadays everyone looks like they are demented or under hypnosis? If you want to watch a true satire of western world, watch Triangle of Sadness. This one is just a tasteless bowl of cold porridge.
Cike Nie Yin Niang (2015)
Boring and self indulgent
Beautiful and with well choreographed fighting sequences. Amazing decors and photography. But the pace was slow without any good reason with the narrative suffering resulting in a confusing storyline.
Jessy and Nessy (2020)
Curiosity as learning tool
Everyone knows that with kids, the best way to ensure they grow up to be interesting adults is to mix learn and play. This show brings it to a whole new level by allowing kids to embrace a series of everyday events and finding an explanation that falls into an absurd realm that will delight any person that watches it. This will certainly resonate later in life when they think of thunder and lightning, electricity, fog, etc. Absolutely thrilled that this is available to my child and on top of that it looks beautiful with all the sets and with the way they mix a real girl with animation elements.
Brave New World (2020)
simplistic and boring
I was excited by this show, as I usually get with good Sci fi material. The premises of the show in an poignant discussion about individuality and collective well being, about freedom and safety and the complex results when you sacrifice one or the other. Instead we get a childish view of sexual behavior ( a lot and alot of it) and boring crushes between the characters with silly talks about dating, etc. This should be a more B story and not the actual main narrative. All the juicy stuff about the creators and how it led to this decision only gets a small reference and not enough thought. And instead of making Indra a true collective character without personifying her too much they do what every scifi does these days...they create a childish psico, cruel and silly. The best is Bernard by far.
The Affair (2014)
What a train wreck after season 02
I give this show 5 stars out of respect for the first season and to some extent the second season. But my oh my how it went downhill and just became a boring and unpredictable show. All it did was show us the most depressing long dialogue scenes and also unrealistic sex scenes for desperate househusbands and wives. The season finale did show us some good scenes but it didn't get close to make up for the damage it did up to that point. But back to the first season. A brilliant concept with the story being told by multiples perspectives and how it affects the ones around us but they seem to drop that more and more as the seasons progressed and only used it sporadically with no real relevance to the narrative.
The best: Season 01
The worst: Season 03 onwards with the cherry on the cake being the future storyline of Joanie Lockhart. This timeline was clearly only introduced because Ruth Wilson and Joshua Jackson left the show at the end of season 04. Some of the worst acting and writing I have seen in years with confrontational scenes between Joanie and Ben Cruz
Ahlat Agaci (2018)
Cinema at its best...well almost
I have been following Nure Bilge Ceylon for a few years and his early movies were a revelation that truly made a mark on the way I looked at cinema in my twenties. This movie contains all the elements that make me love his movies with the exception of the amount of lengthen dialogues that it contains. One truly extended dialogue would have been enough but the sheer amount of them throughout the film drains the energy out of it. That is the reason it's not a master piece. Still a million times better than many other movies.
Dark (2017)
It slowly descendent into one big incoherent soap opera
I'm going to give this 5 stars because in fairness it started of really well. It has a great cast and an amazing soundtrack and production value. My problem is how complex it became, which is fine when you can sustain it and counterbalance with other elements. These days it seems that any science fiction that gets made everyone need to talk really slow and walk slow any time they see fit. Also they just went crazy with the criptic and symbolic communication between characters. I understand it's a valuable tool when you want to slow things down and make the seasons last, but enough is enough. Also they crammed every single time travel theory know to man into this show resulting in the story suffering. The whole thing ended being confusing and boring. I love good science fiction, which this clearly didn't become in the end.
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Kerry Washington and the baby plot
Started watching this with high expectations and was expecting something captivating and original. All I got was a soap opera with moments that were so funny when they were intended to be serious. Kerry Washington is by far the worst of it. Completely unlikable and what is the story with those facial expressions. Reese Witherspoon saves the show so it is barely watchable.
Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019)
Boring and Box ticker
I watched this movie with the expectation that it would be slow and focused on visuals to tell its story. And it did. The problem was the amount of dialogue... they just wouldn't shut up with banalities. Incredibly boring for the most of it and not really pushing it when it came to editing and the lack of wide shots to frame the landscape. Certain scenes were also somewhat displaced and just not believable in the context of the time. The resolution incredibly dull and predictable. If you want to do a truly feminist movie, break rules and amaze your audience, don't put them to sleep. A clear case of form over substance
Modern Love (2019)
Slowly went down hill
The first story had charm, wit and originality...and a lot of heart. The second Ep was predictable and boring and the third one: OMG Anne Hathaway was just impossible to watch and so irritating... that ep just ended it for me
Whiplash (2014)
A Bic Mac served on a Gold platter
I'll start by saying that I enjoyed the movie and in a entertainment popcorn kind of way. It has great music, nice cinematography and the actors were good taking into consideration of what was asked them to do. But this is about it, which sometimes is plenty taking into consideration the amount of crap movies that are out there. The problem resides on this film being pretentious and flat with not possible depth of it's message in an artistic sense and let's not even go for morale. The film's plot is unrealistic in the way the The teacher (Fletcher) behaves in this particular set up, being incoherent in the way he reacts at certain points of the movie. Also the way the students react to him, or not react in this case being mere puppets. That said, there is no way in the slightest possible way, that this story could be convincing. I wont get into details not to create any spoilers. One might argue that it is an allegory of reality, but that needs to be presented with some real start point, which is completely non existent and it would serve a purpose to convey a strong message, which does not exists and if it intended to exist, it is confusing as hell: being a prick pays off or doesn't? Does talent only flourishes under extreme and sadistic situations, or not? Is being professional and always have the music as the main core the answer, or your own macho ego should prevail? The secondary characters are completely non existing and should not be there to begin with. I found this movie no different from a 80s Reagan movie, Van Dame and alike, only more eye brow and full of nasty clichés.
Goldfinger (1964)
Guy Hamilton lacks Terrence Young's vision
Having discovered the Bond films later than most people and having an admiration of Sean Connery I must be critical of the third movie, Golffinger. Unlike the first two movies directed by Terrence Young, this Guy Hamilton's film lacks the glamor and art work of the previous films. It focus mainly on Bonds fixation with women(who are used and abused in most scenes) and has a few clichés about Bond's taste for class, which prove ridiculous because the Bond doesn't have to demonstrate explicitly his class, making the director's effort pointless. The story is interesting but it takes away Bond's charisma making him as a simple pawn who is lucky. Resumedly: Guy Hamilton can a make an entertaining film but lacks the vision and dept of Terrence Young
