Robin Hood (2018)
Take it for what it is and you will enjoy it
Imagine if you will a movie that combines Kingsman and the story of Robin Hood with a sprinkle of over the top bow and arrow fights which would have not been out of place in the tv show Arrow and you have this version of the famous legend of Sherwood Forest.
If historical facts and to the letter re enactments of events are what you crave then you will be disappointed, however that said if a slightly more modern twist on a character with some action sequences that are in fact well done and entertaining if not historically accurate then sit back and have yourself a it of fun with this film.
Why would the writers try and replicate the version that caused the worst record in history to clog up the charts for months on end, what would be the point its been done already.
It isn't going to win any awards that's true but I am sure the writers didn't really expect it to.
Many of the haters will probably be creaming over the new Rambo film which is far far worse far far more predictable yet will go on to make millions for being a rehashed version of something that wasn't very good in the 1st place.
Give this a chance take it for what it is and watch with an open mind.
The Silence (2019)
The plot has more holes than a tea bag
The basic problem with this film is that it makes no sense at all. There were many many obvious solutions to getting rid of the psycho budgies yet the Army/Navy/Air force/Police and Government did nothing and had no plan. The characters are simply awful which is a shame as the actors playing them potentially have the quality to do so much more, definitely not one of the highlights of their CV's. There were mobile phone signals, electricity even after seemingly the entire World had run to the hills how is that possible, don't power grids make a noise ? Then there was the ending which I assume jumped a few years in a matter of seconds as the lead characters hair had grown at least 12 inches ... very lazy in my opinion.
Sabrina and Aunt Zelda meets Gremlins .... poor very poor
Awaydays (2009)
More intelligent than your average " Hooligan" film
I watched this film a few years ago and recently viewed it again. Maybe it is because I am that bit older now but I really enjoyed it 2nd time around. This is so much more than just another football hooligan film, yes of course it has obligatory fight scenes between rival supporters but there is a really decent back story involved. a troubled disaffected youth in hard time England trying to find an identity and become a face in the firm whilst also trying to be the man of the house and being part of the family and being a role model; for his younger sister, the struggle to balance both life styles is difficult if not impossible and you always get the sense that he really isn't sure which way to turn. After obtaining the notoriety and acceptance he craved for so long you realise that perhaps he is not sure it is what he actually wanted or believed it was going to be. Then there is the character Elvis, brilliantly played and acted a kind of intellectual thug who seems to gain no pleasure in what he does but again struggles to find that one chance/lifeline that can give him what he wants, trouble is he too isn't sure what it is he wants. Set to a fantastic soundtrack and a bleak background this is a great movie that does take a little more concentration than many other Hooligan movies but that's because it has a story outside of just jumping on the train having a fight, back to the pub to arrange the next weeks excursion. The fashion is of its time and plays a big part in my enjoyment of the movie. Give it a watch you wont be disappointed .. a hidden gem in the hoolie genre that offers that little something more.
Overlord (2018)
A fine mixture of action/war/horror that works just so well
I was fortunate enough to see an advance screening of Overlord and really didn't know what to expect being that my only exposure to the film was a trailer at the screening of another film a few days before. I will confess to not being a great fan of the war genre and more leaning to the horror element the trailer suggested was contained.
The opening sequences of the soldiers on the plane is absolutely awesome, the effects the acting were top draw and had me thinking maybe I should give war films a little more of my time. Its a dark film with a very clever plot and all the actors play their role brilliantly and are very believable. As I have said the war scenes are spectacular to look at and the horror scenes are not so over the top as to ruin the hard work that has come before it. In a very weird way the factors leading up to the horror scenes are believable and you can imagine that just maybe somewhere in a dark forest these things could actually be happening.
Its a great film that doesn't take itself too seriously and is exactly what the trailer suggests, an action packed visual delight that deserves to be seen.
My only concern is that it doesn't get ignored due it being released around the same time as Halloween and Bohemian Rhapsody as it truly deserves a platform of its own.
Support this little gem you will not be disappointed
The Krays: Dead Man Walking (2018)
As Gangster films go this is the worst I have ever seen
What we have here is a badly constructed attempt at once more making money from the name Kray. Yes the basics of the "story" are factual but once that it is established early on what we then have is 75 minutes of disjointed, badly acted toilet cinema. Whilst the twins were not identical they did at least pass a resemblance to each other, the two casted here not only look nothing like each other they look nothing like the Krays. One looks more like a geography teacher and the other like a 80's estate agent with a fixation for Freddie Mercury. Chuck in a few ex Eastenders actors used basically to boost the cast list on the DVD cover, an awful storey line, abysmal dialogue ( treacle ???!! ) and you have the recipe for wasting just an over an hour of your life you will never get back.
This truly is the worst film not only of the genre but possibly ever made avoid at all costs even if it is offered to you free of charge. Jog it on treacle
