Barbie (2023)
Absurd
This movie has an absurdist quality about it that I can't really explain, almost like early 2000's Ben Stiller movies like Zoolander or Tropic Thunder, that makes you feel as if you hallucinated the whole thing. In that regard, another comparison is Monty Python's flying circus and the sort of delightful wittiness of the show.
Barbie is profoundly silly and strange and an extremely high effort production, reflected in the spectacular set design. Ryan Gosling is absolutely perfect for the role so much that he steals the show. The result is that Barbie is almost completely unlike anything else you would see at the cinemas.
I don' t think the film is perfect or anything, the ending, for me, felt a bit unsatisfying for Ken, at least, and the film also contains a car commercial, for some reason. At the end of the day, even if you disagree or have problems with the feminist argument that the film makes, the film will have you smiling like an idiot most of the time in a way that not many other pieces of media can.
Barry: tricky legacies (2023)
Depends on what comes next, not great in itself
What I can only assume about this episode, is that it was the part of the season that was deemed 'necessary' to establishing Barry's current situation by the showrunners, so we aren't left completely confused in the coming conclusion - but that also means that, in my view, it is difficult to see what the episode even does without seeing what comes after it.
I think this episode will benefit, in future, when the subsequent episodes are out and the season can be watched as a whole. In itself, though, I think this episode is pretty confusing and doesn't have much merit in itself outside some scenes such as the knock at Barry's door.
