Castlevania (2017)
Does everything have to be gorey in order to be good nowadays?
Just so you know, Castlevania is one of the videogame series that I find most inspiring and fun. My favourites are the NES ones (specially); the SNES ones and also the N64/ps1 ones.
Since it left the classic horror theme and gave the franchise a more "anime-ish" title, I personally thought that the series started to go downhill. Not to mention how most of the recent games started to feel more unispiring and unoriginal (seeing how similiar their gameplay style is to many other different videogame seies such as God of War, Devil may Cry, Prince of Persia, etc...
Now lets talk about the actual show
You probably have already noticed that the show PROSSESSES (see what I did there?) an anime-like animation style similiar to Avatar the last Air-bender and some animated DC and Marvel movies. Its good for what it is, id say!
The plot is decent, not impressive for what I can tell. If you have played Castlevania III, you should be familiar with it since the show is entirely based on that game.
The character's personalities and voice-acting are spot-on even though they aren't given much of those aspects in the videogame. Its mostly what youd expect them to be or sound like
The content, well the thing is Im not really sensitive to brutal violence but in here, it sounded like they wanted to be super edgy and go as far as possible with the gory action and the few swears. What it bothers me the most is that Castlevania isnt (for the most part) this gorey and violent, and it clearly didnt start off like this. Of course I wasnt expecting it to be some sort of He-man type of cartoon for kids, but taking a franchise that is or was good in its own way and then and turn it "super R-rated" just to please fans. I would make more sense if they adapted something that already started like that or who knows maybe even create a new series and add it whatever they want!
And keep in mind that the show is based off a E/7+ rated videogame where your characters whip candals to gain hearts that are used for ammunition. So I really dont see why they gave this much seriousness and brutal content.
It's even more surprising since it was developed by Frederator Studios because they were mostly known for producing kids shows such as the Fairly Odd Parents and Adventure Time.
So there you go, this is my perspective, I'm sure you might have a different one so you should watch it for yourself and then find out if it pleases you or not, afterall it only has 4 episodes so far.
Little Nightmares (2017)
If Little Big Planet and Outlast had a baby
Well I dont happen to be much of a fan of horror games, but this game is completely different from all the other ones, it has its own charming "cartoony" animation style (that kind of reminds me of some awesome "horror" childrens movies with stop-motion animation like Frankenweenie and Coraline); and it has no clear plot, making you use your imagination to live this experience.
But dont let this aspects fool you, because despite being cartoony and not having much of a plot, the game is incredibly dark. Like I mentioned in the tagline; the perspective, puzzle solving and the controls of the game are similiar to the ones in Little big Planet´s, and then some other aspects like it´s atmosphere, grotesque characters (and the way they behave and try to attack the player who is defenceless) are similiar to hardcore horror games like outlast.
The way I captured the story, you are a little girl named Six who is very fragile and extremelly small compared to the other disturbing adult enemies of the game. You got sent and trapped to some kind of prison called the Maw where children are cooked and eaten by the people who visit it. Its up to you to help her escape from that evil place and avoid traps and other characters that try to capture you or kill you.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, there are some parts where Six suffers from severe hunger, and you have to find something for her to feast on.
Compared to other horror games, this one is very mild. Its not very violent since most deaths are implied, not graphic or happen off-screen, but the more you progress, the darker the game gets.
Specially in (SPOILER ALERT)- the parts where she desperately has to eat something to stay normal. At first she eats a piece of bread that was offered to her by another child (okay, nothing wrong with that, right) ,but later she eats a rat that was trapped, a gnome WHO WANTED TO OFFER HER SOME FOOD and an adult woman with whom she has a confrontation with. (END OF SPOILERS)
And also the ending is excessively dark
I personally think that PEGI exaggereted a bit with the 16+ age rating.
It does depend on what kind of person is playing it; if youre too sensitive person, you might not enjoy it
I would say that a 13/14 year old can handle it well
One more thing, the controls can be a bit messy, and make some parts of the game seem frustrating; also keep in mind that the game is kind of short but it doesnt feel like its incomplete or something like that.
So I am willing to give it a 7 out of 10 stars.
So if you do like horror, or atleast games with a dark and creepy atmosphere; and also like puzzle solving, platformers, and games where you are free to create your own plot by using your own perspective and imagination like Limbo and Inside, then this game is for you.
Just a heads up, a Little Nightmares tv show is schedueled for the middle of 2019 and it is currentle being projected by Henry Selick (the guy who was responsible for some of the best and creepiest stop-motion kids movies like the ones i mentioned earlier) so if you played and enjoyed this game, and got a lovely time watching those movies than im sure you will be looking forward to it.
Sealab 2021 (2000)
disappointed with this show
First off, I really enjoy the classic william streets and AS shows like Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Brak show and especially Aqua Teen Hunger Force for their silly surreal humour, creative and wacky characters and their retro hanna barbera animation style.
So i was really looking forward to check out this one, but before that i checked out the original Sealab 2020 and it happened to be really good for an HB cartoon, it was more serious, of course, but also intresting and even educational for kids, sadly it only had 13 episodes and it was immediately forgotten when it ended.
And with that I really didnt know what to expect from it, so i started watching it and like I already mentioned, I was disappointed. While the shows humour is still silly and surreal like the ones in the other shows i mentioned earlier from the same Animation studio, this one just isnt as good, and unlike those, this one can be really offensive just for the sake of shocking viewers, and in order for offensive comedy make people laugh, it must have a point, right?
But no, the shows humour is randomly offensive and unfunny. As for the characters, their personality has nothing to do with the original ones. In the old one they didnt have much personality shown but atleast you could see that they were inteligent, brave and likeable people, which I bet that if the show continued they could be many little kids role models.
So what do you do with such a bright crew of scientists like that one?
Well, turn them into a group of dislikeable insane idiots, of course.
The only one that mostly stayed the same is the African-American scientist.
And also there is absolutely no plot, no adventures, everything just happens randomly.
And yes, Space Ghost also suffered from many crazy changes in Space Ghost Coast to Coast (mostly the characters) but the idea of making a talk-show starting with those characters is a really creative and funny idea. Also Sealab 2020 was a very original and unique idea for a kids cartoon, I bet that it would have gotten better over time, who knows?! Maybe it would turn out to become as popular/iconic as Johnny Quest or even Scooby-Doo.
So, all I can say is WHAT A WAASTE! Even if this was an original show from AS, it would still be a very mediocre one but just the fact that this is supposedly a spin-off of the old crimminaly-underrated bright show that had so much potential makes me even sadder because it tottaly ruined the franchise.
So there you go,If you like old Hanna Barbera cartoons or hell, any cartoon, i really dont recommend this one! the only reason I am giving it a 5/10 is because I am a fan of william streets shows and I also liked the character Sharko, he was kind of like the jar-jar binks from that show but he was funny and a creative idea for a character.
