Ad Astra (2019)

The good ruined by plot holes.

Warning: Spoilers
I liked the mood, the technical quality and the space exploration subject.

But there are bad things regarding the plot...

Examples :

Near the end, the father accept to follow his son and to quit his spaceship really too easily. I mean, the guy is reluctant to stop his quest since about 25 years, even to the point of killing his crew. Then, after only a little talk, he follow his son outside the spaceship and commit suicide. He could have commit suicide long ago...

At the very end, after his return on earth, the main character seems to be completely free as if he has never disobeyed to Spacecom and as if he has never caused the death of all the crew of a spaceship few months ago...

The Vanished (2020)

This is something else.

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is fascinating.

Firstly, you think you are watching a regular low budget crime thriller.

Then, after the revelation that the little girl died about six year ago, you start thinking you are rather watching a brilliantly crafted and twisted thriller.

But the most fascinating part comes after that. I'm referring to the very last scene, when the vr is moving on the road. In this scene, helped by the nice background music, every second of the no talk connection (looks exchange) between the couple are really brilliant and have deep meaning about how bad they are suffering every f...cking day since 6 years!

A regular low budget crime thriller that turns to be a powerful emotionaly deep drama. Great !

Very great film overall with few questionable plot choices.

Warning: Spoilers
The very good :
  • Marvel experiencing a more adult type of superhero movie. Even if its far away from the adultness of Watchmen I liked the way they ended up with a film that seems more ''for adult'' in regard of slow paced start, focusing on characters emotion rather than only on their figthing abilities and happy ending not for granted, at least not for everyone (even if its only for money purpose, ability to pay less new actors portraying future charaters).
  • First superhero kind of movie that caused me tears like if I was watching the Mufasa death. The scene when Hawkeye and Blackwidow are debating on which one will allow the other to stay alive and when Pepper allow Tony Stack to go in peace were very emotionaly effective.

The good :
  • Like BvS did when old scene is then showed from another perspective, those similar déjà vu parts were cool in Avengers Endgame.
  • Film length. If its good, the longer it last, the better it is.
  • I have been really surprised by the plot at some moments, which is great. For example, right after the fast Thanos death at the beginning, my brain was like: Ohh ok, so what is going to happen next ? I had absolutely no clue about how the movie will turn from there. Rare feeling being suprised by the plot of a blockbuster movie about superheros... very great !
  • Goog thing that there is not again the feeling of a serie of little movies like it was in Infinity War in which heros were split in small group through the entire film. In Endgame, except during short time travel scenes where heros are split, the movie seems a lot more as a whole.
  • I enjoyed Nebula presence, great character. Good idea to use her to somehow aware Thanos (in past) of what is happening in future. This whole plot idea added a lot of tenseness and thrill in the middle of the movie.

The questionable plot choices :
  • I found the fat and alchoolic Thor really funny but while smiling during first half of the movie, I was really expecting that somehow Thor would has regain his shape before the real action start. Scene where fat Thor is fighting with Thanos and then later where fat Thor is arguing with Qwill for who will be the vessel captain seemed a little awkward.
  • Captain Marvel appearences were strange. At the beginning she is there. No introduction and no talk with its new teamates, she is just there! Then to explain that she will not be around in the middle of the movie, she just said that there is plenty of other worlds and other planets out there to watch. Again, its seemed awkward. Captain Marvel was born on Earth and she dont care a little more of her home planet than the other ones? Then the Avengers could have just call her with the paget before the time travel missions. Then she is able to easily destroy a big space ship in few minutes just by passing through it but after that why she could not just pass through Thanos to kill him. The problem I think is that they portrayed her sometimes too much powerful and because of that it is hard to make her power fits in a movie when she is fighting among teamates. I'm really wondering how Marvel will manage this issue in future.
  • There are issues regarding charaters power abilities when Infinity Wars and Endgame are compared.

Need more

It was great but not perfect, I had the feeling that the movie was rushing to get to the end. As for BvS which was two times better in the longer DVD version than the theatrical one, Justice League should have been at least 150 min long instead of only 120 min.

Hope to see more, maybe with the DVD release.

My ranking for now :

1= BvS (Long version)

2= Man of steel

3= Wonder Woman

3= Justice League (Short version)

4= BvS (Short version)
