Doctor Who: World Enough and Time (2017)
Shock factor carries the episode
The start of the episode is very slow, although this could be to increase the surprise of Bill being shot. The flashbacks are a bit too long for my liking and don't really add too much. The Doctor's reaction to Bill's 'death' is pretty much non-existent, which is not only disappointing, but lets the audience know that she will inevitably come back to life.
Having said that, I really enjoy the premise of the episode and the inclusion of realistic black hole physics was a great point about this episode. The reintroduction of the Mondasian Cybermen works really well; the Cybermen have finally regained their original creepiness, although something about them is not as intimidating as their appearances in classic Doctor Who episodes.
The conversion of Bill into a Cyberman at the end of the episode is a great cliffhanger and really leaves you wondering what will happen next. John Simm reprising his role as the Master is an excellent addition, but the shock was completely ruined by the spoiler of his return. Had this been kept as a secret, my rating of this episode would undoubtably be higher.
This episode has all the ingredients of a really fantastic episode of New Who. However, I feel it would benefit from having some scenes and dialogue removed. An episode such as this has to be concise, but too often it felt that extra dialogue was inserted simply to extend a scene or to create more 'humour'. One thing people who watched the classic episodes will always say, is that the show left them frightened and this is what made it thrilling. This episode has the potential to create this fear and does so to an extent, just not as much as I had hoped.
Doctor Who: Midnight (2008)
One of the best episodes of any series
The suspense throughout this episode makes it, in my opinion, one of the best episodes period (possibly second best after 'Blink'). The premise is simple in that one character (Sky) seemingly possessed by an unknown creature copies the speech of the Doctor and the other passengers aboard the craft. Each time the speech evolves it is intriguing and satisfying to see the reactions of the tourists. This episode introduces a variety of new characters, but gives us just the right amount of information on each of them. The beginning of the episode is very calm and is simply friendly dialogue between the Doctor and passengers, which is in itself refreshing as this rarely happens in the Doctor's chaotic adventures. The rest of the episode showcases the natural instincts of the human race. Fear and pac-mentality play large roles throughout the episode. The majority of the characters don't really have the intelligence to reason with the Doctor, while arguably the only character who does (Jethro) is belittled by his parents and has his ideas cast aside without any analysis. The 'monster' in this episode is unseen. This could be viewed as a cheap tactic, as no new physical ideas have to be made. Having said that, the fact the creature is never seen works extremely well with the theme of the episode.
Doctor Who: Oxygen (2017)
Good premise, ok execution
The opening 2 minutes are engaging and creepy enough to make you think this will be the first good episode of season 10, but the suspense and horror aspect is slowly dropped throughout the course of the episode. The solution to the 'space zombies' isn't very satisfying. I think the premise is relatively simple, which in this particular case leads to the potential of a very good story, but it just doesn't play out that well. Maintaining the level of horror and suspense throughout the episode would have greatly increased my enjoyment. I really wanted to like this episode and I was hoping it would be as thrilling as 'Blink' or 'Midnight', but it falls quite a bit short. The Doctor's incurable blindness also seems to have been used solely for the purposes of a cliffhanger, and not to add any real depth to the episode, as we know there will be a cure forthcoming (Probably the very near future).
