Beauty & the Briefcase (2010)
For the writer's sake, I hope this was someone else's idea
Aside from promoting every negative female stereotype, the movie had little else going for it. So, somehow there is one token black person (a model roommate, who has a grand total of maybe 5 min of screen time), a famous and well-established female photographer barely in her late twenties, and some nobody broke neurotic and vain wanna-be writer living together. Of course, the two women who have somewhat of a life want to help out their down-on-her- luck friend (in addition to free rent in an amazing Manhattan apt. and groceries and lending clothes etc) by getting her a meeting with the chief editor of Cosmopolitan mag. How likely!! That would of course happen! For the next 85 min of my life I cringed and died inside. Maybe the acting wouldn't be so bad if the dialogue didn't revolve around Cinderella on pink crack.
I am so angry for watching this movie, I'm sorry if this review is incoherent. I just can't believe this got made?!!
Things I learned from this movie because I was too naive to know them before: Women don't actually need to do any work, they just need to be pretty and fashion-obsessed Men let poor choices slide if you're a woman If you're mind-numbingly stupid, that's OK = you'll have a happy ending too Cosmo really cares about writers they never met or published and give out cover stories like candy The Magic Man with the sexy British accent is really a waiter, try to snatch a grad degree carrying investment banker instead - he could support your shoe habit
Shortbus (2006)
Very beautiful film
I didn't expect to like this movie because when I fast-forwarded through it and based on other reviews, it seemed the storyline was limited with the graphic content the only hook. But it is actually a very fresh perspective on the changing attitudes of society. Certain themes such as homosexuality and polygamy are examined but at the end, it's a movie about love. In whatever capacity a person may be able to give it, love is explored from both the receiving and giving perspectives.
In the movie, there are several plot lines that are weaved together, and one of the more interesting relationships is between Jaimie and James. As a couple they have been together for five years but James has depression among other instabilities. He spends six months compiling a video for Jaimie as a farewell gift after his suicide. James even goes as far as to pick out a partner for Jaimie to continue on the relationship. It was a perfect depiction of a person's self-worth and the always-present sadness. I was really mesmerized by how their relationship evolved.
Overall, the movie is brilliant. Very well written, with a good balance of comic and philosophical wits. Good cinematography and great soundtrack. Very believable acting as well.
If you are an open-minded person and don't discriminate against any particular group, I highly recommend this movie. It's a rarity that will be enjoyable with multiple viewings.
Pushing Daisies (2007)
Just saw the pilot - TERRIFIC!
I usually am ashamed to admit that I watch too much TV, but I am telling you this show is soo worth your hour!! (or 40 min. technically if you watch w/o commercials) Firstly, the show features actors who I'm not really familiar with so it is really nice to have a chance to associate with someone you're just getting to know (not to mention Lee Pace is very good-looking).
The plot and writing are -to steal a word from the pilot- a DELIGHT! It has a fairytale premise for adults! It just is a feel good show that has a sense of optimism - none of that dark tragic with no comic revelations stuff.
PRETTY please watch this show because it does not deserve to be cancelled!
