Tesla (2020)
Mediocre at best
Tesla's story deserves better. It's not a terrible movie, but his achievements and life need a better retelling than this. A poor biopic, hopefully somebody will have the talent and a good script to do this story justice in the future.
Ha-roo (2017)
Outstanding
Repeating days or hours is not exactly original in the movies, but here it's done emotionally. I was captivated as the story unfolded and I think you will be too. Highly recommended.
My Bloody Valentine (1981)
Finally available uncut
I rated this a 5 some years ago as despite being well filmed and having a good premise I was bitterly disappointed by the lack of gore or any good kills, as this must be among the top priorities for a so called slasher. Recently I learned that the film on theatrical release and subsequent VHS and many DVD releases was heavily cut. This was a shame as it ruined the movie, why watch a slasher movie without any slashing?
Happy to say now it is finally available as uncut as possible, only missing one kill that was filmed but as I am aware was lost footage. This is the version to watch for all fans of the genre. It was filmed in Nova Scotia, some of it in an actual mine, which adds to the atmosphere. The kills are inventive, hanging scene and pickax through the neck and out the eye being my favourites.
Some of it takes place on Saturday the 14th obviously homage to Friday the 13TH which was also distributed by Paramount.
MBV although not a hit on release, did spawn a remake and while at the time I thought the remake a little better, I changed my mind on seeing the uncut original. MBV deserves to be included near the top 80's slashers. It is a shame it was cut by the censors and poorly handled by the distributes. If you are a fan of slashers then find the uncut version. I have changed my rating from 6 to 8
The Two Popes (2019)
Amazing performances
I am a non practising catholic, but I really don't think you need to be of any faith to like this . The story is somewhat slight, and much of it is subtitled. Somehow I found myself riveted by two fantastic natural performances. I really felt I knew the lead characters especially Johnathan Pryce. I'm not entirely sure if this is a true story but who cares. It's the most believable thing I've seen in ages. I couldn't help being glued to the screen while the two leads spoke whatever language. A big surprising triumph and if I had a vote Johnathan Pryce would win an award.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 1: The Mandalorian (2019)
Fantastic opening episode
I see this series has a very high rating despite only one episode airing. It's unfair to rate and entire season on only the pilot so I have concentrated on this first episode. And it for sure is a 10. It doesn't waste much time getting down to the action while still giving some character information. And the interesting ending will give fans of the original trilogy something to ponder and look forward to. It's action packed and will definitely get you hooked, Let's see if the remainder of the series can live op to this exciting first instalment.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
If you have a great memory then it't great
Along with most people I was a huge fan of the show. Best on TV in many people's opinions. Unfortunately my memory of the minor characters is somewhat blurry as Breaking Bad finished six years ago. I found myself wondering if these characters were seen before, if I should know them. Who's that? and so on. There is also many flashback scenes to confuse further as the actors have aged and it can be difficult as to know the time frame of the scene you are watching, especially at the beginning.
The performances are excellent however and Robert Foster stands out in particular. As I just finished watching this, I looked at the news to discover he had just died. A very sad note but an amazing performance to leave us with.
My advice to anyone unless you are very familiar with all the characters in BB then this may confuse you. Catch up with the original series, it's worth the time to watch an amazing series once again. A solid seven for this. Eleven for the original series.
Hopelessly Ever After (2019)
It had early potential but.......
I thought I was watching a serious documentary about three men trying to find love in the most obvious place you shouldn't, that is the Asian bar girl scene. I thought it might show an insight into the girls and tell some of their stories. After about 35 minutes it turned into a badly staged mockumentary, trying hard to be funny and falling as flat as their wallets after a trip to a gentleman's club.
Some of it was real but as there were many staged scenes, it was hard to tell the real from the fake. Or even care what was what.
I believe one of them found what he was looking for. I found a wasted opportunity to take the subject more seriously and make a decent documentary on a weighty subject matter.
I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu (2019)
I Spit on Your Grave: Loda' Poo
I don't hate this movie because it is misogynistic.
I don't hate this movie because of its rape scenes.
I don't hate this movie because of its violence, in fact that's the only thing I like about it.
I hate it because it's a piece of badly made garbage filled with some of the worst actors possible to hire. The actors playing the antagonists Idea of acting is screaming badly written lines at each other.
I have seen the original and remake and sequels of the remake, but this is a direct sequel to the original ''exploitation classic'' so I knew what to expect in the way of graphic content. I am not one to shy away from such content; I am somewhat of a fan of extreme cinema and 70 s horror and sleaze. This long-awaited official sequel is mostly a big disappointment, even with the return of the original director and leading lady.
The story is pretty lame; it tries hard to recreate the original's set pieces. It seems that the family of one of the original movie's revenge victims have waited almost 40 years to exact their revenge. This time it is the daughter of Camille Keaton's character that is the victim of the rapes and beatings. I presume this is because few would want to see Camille Keaton, now about 70 naked.
The antagonists are seeking revenge for the death of the original rapists by Keaton's character. They are led by the crazed widow of the rapist that was finally seduced and castrated in the 1978 movie. Also included is the father of the slow-witted character in the original, who is just as dim whited.
The characters are all stereotypical redneck. In fact they give a bad name to stereotypical rednecks. The story is full of stupidity and a lot of the plot just doesn't add up. The widow redneck has somehow managed to send two kids to college by pumping gas for the past 40 years. She is talking about how good they turned out. Anyone in this family is seriously messed up. There is a feeble attempt at a twist in the last 20 minutes, if you want to call it that.
I think if you are interested in this movie then you must have heard of, or most likely seen the 1978 original, I Spit on Your Grave AKA Day of the Woman. I think you will likely be disappointed by this sequel, as most of the (over) acting is hard to take, unless you like people shouting at each other. The other problem is that it goes on for so long at nearly 2 hours 28 minutes. Far too long for what is basically a badly made exploitation movie. I believe it lay on the shelf waiting for a distributor for nearly 4 years. I don't think they had any luck finding a distributor, as the opening and closing credits of the version I saw had no company logo, only the director or probably a relation of the director was credited as producer. It's a film that mostly misogynistic, sleazy and violent, a relic from the 70's but made 40 years later. For me, that's not necessarily a bad thing as I am a fan of 70's B movies. I just wish this had better actors and was better made. I give this a 3/10 only for the slightly over the top gory scenes.
Boar (2017)
Enjoyable Creature Feature. Possible sporlers
I haven't written a review for some time. Primarily as I am not skilled in writing reviews. I can only tell you what I like or despise. This is the former. I liked this enjoyable monster movie, with some special, natural acting performances. OK Boar is far from perfect, but if you take it for what it is- a fun creature feature, then there is much to enjoy. While not scary, it delivers gore and has practical special effects that fans who are sick of CGI will enjoy. The monster or Bore looks as scary as a Dragon at a Chinese New Year celebration, but I think this adds to the B- movie charm. The dialogue and acting is particular good from the older actors and seems very natural. I just loved the two older characters who discover the bodies, It is a refreshing change to see older people stalked and possibly slashed by a monster. Many movies nowadays have teenagers played by 20 somethings getting killed by doing silly things. At times during this movie it is hard to know who may be the protagonists. characters are introduced and killed shortly afterwords. Many cliches abound like - Anyone having sex, will die gruesomely, buy hay? Creature fans and B movie fans should like this, and I look forward to watching a possible sequel. 8/10
Early Man (2018)
Disappointing
Bitterly disappointing effort from Aardman. Although the animation is up to the usual high standards of Nick Park the story is boring and very few of the jokes hit. I found myself getting bored after about 25 minutes and reaching for my phone. Tedious jokes and dull script. I have been a fan for some time but this is the worst effort by far from the Aardman Studio. Please hire some decent writers. The budget is shown as 50 million, They certainly didn't spend much on the script. It must have cost 50 million snuckles.
Disappointed
