Ghostbusters (2016)
Review from a normal person
I remember vaguely watching the original as a child but basically saw this movie fresh minded with no expectations.
I thought it was a pretty great film! I really liked the 4 main actresses and they bounced off each other well. The film was light-hearted and really fun to watch! The cgi was really well done, and actually quite beautiful during the big ending scene.
Personally I think this would've done really well as a TV/streaming series, as we would get to explore more fleshed out characters, the premise of the show definitely allows for it. I hear there's a number 2 movie coming out and I'm looking forward to it.
I'm sure if this was a movie wasn't being compared to the original (which has such a big die hard fan base), there wouldn't be so many negative reviews. Unfortunately that's what you've got to expect when revisiting classics.
Wonder Woman (2017)
I was really looking forward to this film...
I heard such good things about the film so I was coming in to it with a very positive attitude. Unfortunately it was just... disappointing.
Disappointments:
- Stiff acting. Some of the acting was just cringe worthy, the chemistry between the two leads was very artificial and unbelievable. Lucy David (Etta), and David Thewlis (Sir Patrick) were probably the acting highlights of the show, although he did look particularly ridiculous in his viking helmet. Lilly Aspell (a young Diana) did a fantastic charming job of playing a young mischievous princess.
- CGI. Certain things like the lasso were quite nice, as well as scenery and background, but action scenes where things were thrown, levitation of characters and certain villainous transformations were jarringly obvious.
-Script writing. Most of the plot is about an army man spy baby-sitting a naive princess.
The most disappointing thing is how they warped Wonder Woman's well known pacifist nature to one of a generic thug. Hit first, ask questions later, violence is always the answer. I would think the classic WW would be horrified at Trevor killing someone to protect her, and she'd lecture him instead of thanking him.
Her stabbing a man she thought to be Aries (with no proof) right in cold blood was the final character killing moment for me. There's no wonder there, only a thug in a fancy suit.
Bling (2016)
Generic bits taken here and there from various kids films
As the title says it feels like a film which has tried to take the most popular elements of kids films (e.g. minions from Despicable Me) and mish-mashed them all together hoping it would be a great film.
Some of the elements in the film were particularly bizarre, for instance, the villain falling in love with the aunt, he appears to be child aged (10) falling in love with the aunt (maybe 30?). Then 20 years later he's still going for her. By this point the guy is in his 30s chasing a 50 year old lady.
Rip-off characters, fart jokes (not even really jokes), strange messages including "max out your credit cards to get rings".
It's not the worst film I've seen, and I think kids will enjoy it, but you'll find yourself asking "why the hell didn't she propose to him instead of being upset at waiting 20 fricken years for him to do it?"
Swiss Army Man (2016)
Great film!
Certainly not your run of the mill film, and I can see any 'serious' sort of person not enjoying it at all.
The best way to go in to watch this film is with a light heart and an open mind.
From watching a steel faced Manny fart-propelling through the water, to watching their friendship slowly build, all the way through to the ending I found unexpected sadness, a twinge of hopefulness, a sense of shock, empathy, and last but not least pure enjoyment watching this film.
It's different, and a lot of people don't like different, but I absolutely loved this film. 10/10.
