Don't Look Up (2021)
A different type of comedy...
I went into this with my husband and our 2 teen boys. 1 teen boy and my husband left the livingroom halfway through because they couldn't sit through it. It is very dry and awkward, but that's the point. The last quarter of the movie was fascinating and kept us remaining 2 members completely engrossed. Just not meant for everyone ... but I enjoyed it! Go in expecting to feel weird, but just know that it does end in an impact full way.
Candyman: Shadow Puppets (2020)
Diehard Candyman Fan - This was AWESOME!
(My take on the negative woke reviews is at the end of this review.)
Brilliant film. As a huge Candyman fan, I went in hesitant bc the trailer made it seem like they completely changed the entire story & created an entirely new Candyman. This was NOT the case. It is essentially a part 2 of the original 90s film. There were so many hype points for me, especially the ending scene with the original quotes & ... well, I won't spoil it. But the ending was the best part if you loved the original. I give it a 9 only because there is a character in this that their reasoning behind breaking the pact made no sense to me. And also bc we didn't get any "groin to gut" action. Yes, I'm a weirdo & the gore wasn't up to par for me. Lol.
About the other reviews: I'm a white girl born in 89 who grew up watching the originals. The negative reviews bc it was "woke" are banking on that Cabrini was gentrified since the 90s (like most places) & Candyman represents all of the ppl wrongly killed who live in the projects.
Who *typically* lives in the projects? People of Color.
If you're doing a part 2 to a film that took place in the projects in the 90s, the chances of that place still being the projects in our modern world is slim. It was modernized bc it makes sense. "Woke" is modernization. If you hate that, then you need to take a long look at yourself internally as a person bc your negative review of a film actually says was more negatively about you as a human being.
Good job Peele! You got people talking AGAIN!
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
The ghost story was an unnecessary part of the story
The husband was already psycho. The house didn't make him that way bc he stole his cousins identity before even moving there.. I LOVE ghost stories & thrillers. But this movie is about a man who is crazy, has an affair, and gets caught so he starts killing everyone around him before they catch on.
Oh and at the same time, there's a ghost in the house trying to protect the wife.
Thats it. The entire home history and all that was so confusing bc it was trying to run alongside another story and it got outpaced. I want so badly to like it, I just can't.
The Little Things (2021)
All the little things...
Everyone obsessing over all the little things in the film to find the answer ... is the film itself.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Haunting of Hill House Season 2
People keep saying "stop comparing it to HHOHH" but I mean ... its Haunting of Bly Manor. Even their Twitter (@haunting) changed the name but not the handle. It IS haunting of hill house season 2. Same as AHS. different seasons, same people, different story. This one sucks. Its not scary, its a love story, and its SUPER boring. Plus, the fake accents. Its like they got blown out of the water with Season 1, and wanted to top it by going so far and beyond that it made zero sense and falls into a completely different cinematic category altogether.. Very disappointed in Flannagan.
Ratched (2020)
Love it ... but, shes not a villain?
I loved this show tremendously. Everything about it was phenomenal, but I was a bit perplexed by the character. Nurse Ratched is technically a villain, right? Come on.. Every bit of her being was within reason. Basically, you have this woman doing what she can to protect her brother and he repeatedly messes up her plan. She's then left with another issue, constantly trying to ease him and fix the issues he keeps putting himself in. She even took the bounty of killing a man and gave it to the person who truly killed him. Pretty good character morals, if I do say so myself. In the end, she tried to help her brother by alleviating his excruciating demise ... and she often explained everything through tears. Heart of gold, that woman. Just put in hard situations that she met with hard challenges, and solved with hard decisions to make. She also, might I add, ended a lot of suffering while she was in the war. Villain? No way. Angel of death ... Sure. I'd want her at my Bachlorette party, should things go sour. That, my friends, is certain.
Five Feet Apart (2019)
Cute movie...but uhh...the timeline?
I get that she had OCD and went from 0 to 100 over night by the voicemail she left him ...but they had their first date, he said it was his birthday the next day, they do the birthday, Poe dies, she flips out, they fall thru the ice, declare their love, she gets new lungs, and he leaves ... all in 48 hours. A bit silly in that aspect ... but definitely cute!
Knives Out (2019)
Super predictable
A whodunit, for sure. But within 20 minutes, you manage to figure out the entire thing which makes it a little annoying once you've spent two hours watching it just for it to come out in the end. It makes the entire thing seem pointless because it is so easily predictable, and takes FOREVER to get the answer out. I couldn't get attached to it and found myself doing other things, just to be like "well, obviously" in the end. Seemed like a fake clue, to me, and poorly put together.
A Ghost Story (2017)
This movie messed me up
It's not a horror film. It's a piece of art. There is not a lot of dialogue because its point is to focus on the melancholy depression that is loss. And it's not only about the living, but the loss felt by someone who left this world too soon. Stuck in a loop of sadness that you cant escape. I think this is one of the best films I've seen. Anyone who doesnt like it, doesnt understand loss or depression.
1917 (2019)
Not in one shot. Disappointing.
As a theater kid/adult, I was saddened to watch this and realize it actually wasnt one shot. More like 8. It takes place over roughly 24 hrs so obviously they cant put all that plus explosives, CGI war stuff and action into one shot. There are obvious cut offs. With that being said, the storyline and entire film was absolutely wonderful.
I am legit let down but not let down at the same time. I cannot NOT be let down with this movie. Only reason I went to see it was for the cinematography. I dont like war movies. BUT, the story was VERY good. They conned us on the whole "continuous shot" crap tho
American Son (2019)
Great, but...
I think the point got lost rather quickly.
There are so many specifics that regardless if they dont ever show Jamal and want him to be everyones son, that's simply not the case. Too many dynamics here. An interracial broken home, cheating, secrets, anger, an intelligent young man raised as someone of another race entirely, an FBI agent as a cop, a very specific bumper sticker, very specific charges ... we can all view Jamal as our son, but I guarantee you most people dont have "shoot cops" as a bumper sticker. And he was killed from a ricochet? After a trigger happy black cop shot at someone FLEEING? Why did he even shoot, then? And a RICOCHET?!
I am a super liberal white middle aged woman living in the middle class section of the belt buckle of the bible belt with a lesbian for a daughter and even I found this "controversial" movie to have no point other than "cops are trigger happy".
There are just way too many specific dynamics here that apply to probably .001% of the population. It doesnt fit with anyone on either side.
The acting was sublime tho, and I bawled like a baby in the end.
Eli (2019)
So
There's a car that explodes and then they drive off in it later.
Super magical movie.
The Keeping Hours (2017)
I was so confused... but...
Still giving it a 10. I am a GIANT blumhouse fan and even giant-er horror movie fan. Went in watching a horror movie and ... wait .... this isnt what I think it is. I have a 5 yr old boy and my teen daughter ended up watching this with me and I have never seen her cry so much in my life. It does make you think about what you do for your kids. Go get them that train set. Go to the beach. You only get one shot.
The Bad Batch (2016)
Um... so, about that..
Idk what just happened. It was weird, disturbing, satisfying? Just really REALLY weird.
But I liked it in this really weird way.
Anyone else get Fear and Loathing vibes?
The whole movie in one sentence: girl gets thrown into desert, arm and leg chopped off by cannibals then ends up in a village where she leaves, kills little girls mom, takes little girl, goes back to village, loses little girl, meets little girls dad, finds little girl, lives happily ever after in desert with little girl and dad.
Okay, that was a semi long sentence. This movie has no rhyme or reason. Just a super weird movie.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018)
SOO-PA-PA fun!!
So, I went in dreading this movie. Put it off for a year before I was finally tired enough and caved. And I so regret putting it off so long. It tells the entire backstory, and the future. And even thought you're sad and wanna cry in the end, it follows it up with another dance and singing routine with every cast member. I'm definitely gunna watch it again tomorrow. Soo-pa-pa fun!
The Remains (2016)
Made 0 sense ... dont bother
So, big spoilers here because I'll explain the movie.
1890, a seance is done because a couples daughter is missing. Daughter is dead, bc the medium connects with her. Then the medium is suddenly taken over and kills everyone in the room.
FFW to now, a typical story of mom dying and idiot dad wants to start over with bratty kids in an old home whilst doing no research ahead of time about the home. No one has lived in this house for 120 yrs and it's super cheap and super nice. Sure why not!
So then, the kids start getting possessed bc theres a random chest of old valuables in the house.
Then the dead daughter from the 1890s appears, warns dad that "she" is coming. Medium pops up, makes the kids kill the dad, oldest daughter burns the chest, medium spirit kills the 3 kids.
Then a new family moves in. That's it. No scares. No storyline whatsoever. No back story. No clue as to who the dead girl is or why shes even there. No clue as to what took over the medium and why shes even evil. Then theres this neighbor with a dad who had a stroke in the house, so no development with that either.
None of it made any sense whatsoever and as someone who LOVES bad movies, I just hated this bad movie. Only watched it bc I was a huge True Blood fan.
The end.
Thriller (2018)
Love Bad Movies, but this was TOO BAD
I'm such a fan of B, C, even D list thriller flicks but omg .... this is the worst movie I've seen in a long time. The acting was the absolute worst. Sorry yall, you have no career here lol
The Nun (2018)
Mediocre at best
Huge fan on The Conjuring and II, and had the biggest anticipation for this. I'm so glad I didnt go see it at the theater though, as I wouldve left super disappointed. Decent for a regular family movie night after dinner though, curled on the couch. Other than that, dont put much investment in it. However, the best part was the ending. The circle plot was awesome!
The Houses October Built (2014)
Very entertaining
This movie starts off in my hometown, and ends where I live so it REALLY gave it a natural feel for me since I'm familiar with all the places. The cinematography isnt great (2nd one is way better), but the scare was all too real and leaves you reeling in the end. Must follow up immediately with THOB2
The Houses October Built 2 (2017)
Perfect 2nd
I loved the first for the scare tactics and was left reeling in the end. Especially since it took place in my hometown, so it gave it a more real feel for me. This one is just as good, but in a different way. They piece the two together so well. Despite this one lacking in the scare, it definitely makes up for in storyline and cinematography. Must watch.
The Hate U Give (2018)
Superb.
Definitely got the message across as it shows both sides. It doesnt have a strong narrating factor either, like someone somehow thought it did. We are a white family in Texas and my kids wanted to watch it. I'm so glad they did, because we paused a lot to answer their questions. Unfortunately, a lot of the questions resulted in a "but you're white so this probably wont ever happen to you" response. We dont know what it's like to be black or targeted by police, so it was such an amazing view of it. We cried a lot. Its honest, heartbreaking, and so true to real life (at least from what we can tell).
Everyone definitely NEED to see this.
47 Meters Down (2017)
Sure, I'm overrating this because its underrated!
I love this movie. Its suspenseful, ridiculous, and gets me pumped to never go cage diving. Ignore the professionals here. It's just an entertaining movie.
Seven Pounds (2008)
The most underrated best Will Smith movie ever
Have seen this multiple times over all the years and have always loved it the same. It teaches to love unconditionally, be a great person, and do good.
I now have a 4 year old with consistent tumors and this movie still has me teach him to just be a great person no matter what. Super underrated for what it is.
Abducted in Plain Sight (2017)
I'm not sure how to even rate this.
I dont know what to even say. This was the most outrageous, outlandish and bizarre thing I've ever seen in my life and I cannot imagine there there are grown human beings in this world that are this completely ignorant. I gave my husband a run down of it after and he thought I just watched a spoof. Honestly, I kind of feel that way. The scene of young Jan wincing, looking at the leaves, and hearing her tell what was happening there in great detail .... I just think the imagery was unneeded. It felt so perverted. So many pedophiles out there, and I can imagine watching that scene in particular was satisfying to some. I so wish this man got what he deserved. What a coward. What an absolute evil and vile person. I'm sorry this happened to Jan and her sisters had to be caught up in being raised in this mess. And the parents? I have 0 words. Shame on you.
Mother! (2017)
A Masterpiece not for the small-minded
I absolutely hate that the negative reviews of this film left Aronofsky feeling little. It is NOT a film for the small-minded. I have never left an IMDB review before, so this will be my first because I think the people NEED to see this film.
Go in with the mindset that it is not a movie. Go in with the mindset that it is a piece of art. It has such a deep meaning that most people can't wrap their poor little minds around, thus the bad reviews.
It's brilliant. Nothing more. Nothing less. Absolute brilliance.
Well done and thank you for proving to me in picture that religion is so bad for Mother(!) Earth.
