Shelter (2007)
Why is this movie not more popular
NOTE: There are some spoilers, but they are general and there are no specifics.
1). Overall impression:
I watched this for the first time last night. I loved it. I wasn't expecting a gay movie from 2007 to be that powerful, but it was so beautifully done. It all went together so well.
2). Thoughts on the rating:
This movie did not need to be rated R. I definitely think it should've been PG-13, but not R. I've seen worse things on network television. The Parents' Guide on here is accurate. In short, don't be distraught by the rating as it's really not that bad.
3). As a 2SLGBTQ+ movie:
A lot of 2SLGBTQ+ movies are not happy, especially from the early 2000s. This one, however, is amazing. There is conflict (as in the literary type, not literal), but it's not as dark as some other movies. The ending in itself makes this movie worth watching. If you asked me to describe the perfect ending to this movie then I would not change it. It's literally everything I've always wanted to see in an 2SLGBTQ+ movie.
Trevor: The Musical (2022)
Beautiful
I watched the short film years ago, when I first came out as trans. I thought it was good, but this is a much better version I think (still recommend the short film if you haven't seen it though). I really loved this musical and it is so beautifully and wonderfully done.
The Umbrella Academy: World's Biggest Ball of Twine (2022)
Absolutely beautiful
I was pretty sure that Viktor's transition would be handled well, but this went well beyond my expectations. As a trans person, I felt so well represented. I also like that it is acknowledged, but not taking away from the main plot.
Stranger Things: Chapter Seven: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab (2022)
I don't even know what to say except...
I don't really write reviews for episodes, but this is different. This is probably the most incredible episode of television I've ever seen when I combine CGI, acting, script, everything. This is truly amazing.
First Kill (2022)
It's not half bad
I really don't know why there are so many negative reviews. It's a bit rough at times, but overall this is a really good show! It's not going to be for everyone, but I definitely think it's worth trying.
Heartstopper (2022)
The representation I have been waiting for for my whole life
NOTE: I have NOT read the comics yet, so I am just reviewing the show.
I have not felt this way since Love, Simon came out. There is a lot of LGBTQ+ representation these days, but it seems to always focus on sex, and that is not the reality of most teenage LGBTQ+ relationships. It makes me so happy that this show focuses on the relationship and not just sex. I cannot express in words how happy this show makes me. It is absolutely incredible and happy and I just really love it.
Parallèles (2022)
It's really good
Why are all the reviews so bad? This is a really good show. At first, it seems like it has been done before, but it's different from other things. Yes, it does very much resemble Netflix's "Dark" (2017), but it's not the same thing at all. It's really good and you should really give it a chance!!
Cinderella (2021)
Absurd
I read a review that said this movie was absurd, but that it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. That's the best way I can describe it. It's very funny. While it is cringe-y at times, it is accurate to our modern culture and it has amazing music and choreography. Highly recommend.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
A lot of bad reviews are written by homophobes and don't talk about the actual movie. This will.
Like it says, a lot of the bad reviews here were written by homophobes. This review looks at many aspects.
First, diversity. The diversity is awesome! Racially, gender identity wise, sexuality wise, socioeconomic, religion, you name it. From what I can tell (and have heard from others), the diversity is also well represented.
Second, plot. I love this movie. I'm writing this after having seen all of them, and I can tell you it's worth it. There are so many twists and turns. A lot of people have issues with the high school aspect, but that's just the way things are. It's a movie about high schoolers so you have to deal with the drama. Once you get past that (if it's a thing that bothers you), it's really quite a fascinating movie/story.
Finally, so much to unpack. There are metaphors all over. It's also a reflection of modern society, which is to be imagined. If you like to think and analyse, this is the movie for you.
Something to note: These films, but this one in particular, are INCREDIBLY violent and graphic and gory. I don't like that, but from the parts that I made myself watch, it looks well done.
Another thing to note: The main cast is young. They might not be up to your standard if perfect actors, but they're believable in their roles because they know what it's like. In my opinion, however, the acting is incredible.
In conclusion, I really, really liked this movie. I think that the idea of releasing it like this (and honestly the whole thing) is pretty cool. Please give this movie a chance. It will be so worth it when you're done.
Young Royals (2021)
Not sure what I was expecting, but not this
I am absolutely blown away by every aspect of this show. I don't speak Swedish so I'm watching with subtitles, and mainly focus on those, but from what I can tell, it's incredible. The acting. The costumes. The script. The plot line. Incredible.
Baisers cachés (2016)
Stunning
The ending (last minute or so) isn't very good but other than that it's amazing. Absolutely beautiful.
Everything's Gonna Be Okay: Carolina Sphinx Moth (2021)
It's so REAL
I have struggled a lot of my life with things that I now know are probably autistic traits. This show overall is so accurate about it, but this episode in particular. It shows that Autism truly IS a spectrum, and not everyone is the same. The writers do an incredible job, especially here.
The Changeover (2017)
Ngl I watched for Erana James
So I love The Wilds and I wanted to see some of Erana James's (Toni) earlier work. Her acting is incredible, as well as her dynamics with the other characters/actors. I really don't have any issues with this movie. I don't know why it has such bad reviews.
The Wilds: Day Sixteen (2020)
It gets dark
This episode gets beyond dark. I actually had to split it into parts because I couldn't handle it. As someone who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community and lives in a highly conservative place, I can say that this episode is way too accurate. Having a content warning was highly necessary and I would give this 11/10 if I could.
Schitt$ Creek: Meet the Parents (2019)
AMAZING!!!!
This is everything that a gay person wants from their parents. Couldn't imagine it being done any better!
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
It was amazing
Beautiful
Stunning
Sobbed the whole time
It was just incredible.
I loved it.
The Umbrella Academy: The Majestic 12 (2020)
I CALLED IT
I WANNA GIVE IT HIGHER THAN A 10/10
THIS MADE ME SO HAPPY
Boca a Boca (2020)
I literally watched the whole thing in one day, two sittings
The only reason I gave this a 9/10 and not a 10/10 is because it feels a little bit like what I'd imagine a bad acid trip feels like. The camerawork is incredible, but hurts your eyes sometimes.
It's so so so good. The acting is good. I didn't cringe once.
It's LGBTQ+ representation is absolutely amazing.
And they have uniforms!!!! (No schools have uniforms ever in TV)
Love, Victor (2020)
It's amazing
When I first heard about this I thought it would suck. It did not. This is one of the best examples of what it's like to be a closeted teen I've ever seen. It's very, very well done
Glee: Shooting Star (2013)
Incredible
This is a high school event that is hard to represent well. I think the folks in this show did it incredibly. It hit me.
Outer Banks (2020)
It's GOOD
If you're not gonna read the full review at least know this: I don't know anyone who's watched the whole thing and didn't like it.
I was always planning to watch this show because it was/is filmed where I live and I know people in it. I watched the first episode and it stressed me out so much I couldn't go back to it for two weeks. BUT I watched the rest of it this weekend and it was absolutely amazing. The relationships, romantic, platonic, and socioeconomic are all brilliantly done. I also personally think the lack of cell-phones is very interesting, and while that aspect isn't necessarily realistic, the show on its own is very realistic.
Glee: On My Way (2012)
Amazing
While I can't forgive the character of David Karofsky for the things he did for Kurt, I will not cease to praise Max Adler's (?) performance. I am openly LGBT and I've seen extremely repressed and homophobic people realise that they're LGBT. The way this episode dealt with all of that is so true and while I think the use of f*g is never okay, it added so much to this plot. This is the second episode of Glee I've ever reviewed which is saying something
Glee: Sexy (2011)
I'm disappointed in the US school system
I learned more from this singular episode of Glee than I have ever been taught in school
High School Musical: The Musical - The Series: Act Two (2020)
I almost cried
It's so happy. Like it's so happy. Just go watch it. Stop reading reviews and go watch it
High School Musical: The Musical - The Series (2019)
A M A Z I N G
I'm 16. I was raised on HSM and Disney Channel. At first when this came out I thought it looked dumb...but I decided to watch it anyway, thinking it would be happy optimistic as Disney shows often are. I was right. But this show is also so much more REAL than any other TV show. You have a boy who's parents are getting divorced, LGBTQ+ kids figuring out who they are, stupid decisions, ALL kinds of things. As someone who is heavily involved in chorus and is a HUGE theatre nerd and who happens to be bisexual and transgender, this is what I've been waiting for for years. The representation is incredible. The music is OUTSTANDING. The actors range from 15-23 and play their roles amazingly. I never thought Disney Channel would come as far as to have a 16 year old boy in a PRIDE shirt, but I am so proud.
No matter how good you think it will/won't be, GO WATCH THIS SHOW. It's beautiful and TS real and it's relatable. It's amazing
