Boku no hîrô akademia THE MOVIE - Hîrôzu: Raijingu (2019)
Lazy, unoriginal writing wrapped in pretty animation and characters I love.
This movie is really ok. The plot is pretty derivative of the main series. Kid has special power that bad guy wants to use for bad guy things now deku and friends need to stop them.
My main issues with the movie lie in the really poorly written fight scenes. Every one amounts to the heroes trying there best against an essentially invincible villain until finally, after accomplishing nothing in the fight so far, the heroes pull out some special move that ends the fight instantly.
I think this is best represented by the final fight against 9 who is so unoriginal that the characters refer to him as "like all for one" most of the time. He has two bane style tanks on his back filled with some special purple mcguffin fluid. Both have lines on the glass inticating the amount of fluid left in the tank. The only time the fluid is used is at the end of the fight when he sucks it all in (the fluid in the tank is back in the next shot so who needs continuity). He has a literal ruler on his back measuring how much power he has left but it all gets used in one go after the main characters hit with a special move.
If you're a super fan of the series and just want to see more of your favorite characters do flashy, cool stuff without any actual substance then this is for you (unless you're a todaroki fan because he gets jobbed out pretty hard). Kacchan sums up the movie better than anybody. Responding to the movies main antagonist's motivation with something to the tune of "so it's the same old thing I've heard from your type before."
Uchiage hanabi, shita kara miru ka? Yoko kara miru ka? (2017)
Despite showing bits of promise, Fireworks is full of tropes and poor writing.
Fireworks falls short in most aspects. The characters and their relationships are very underdeveloped, the unique plot hook is not fleshed out, and the animation, while very lovely, is riddled with stilted 3d and consistency errors. I also had problems with the direction at times. Things like the way that some scenes are lit and the audio tracks being an unnatural volume took me out of the film. The latter could be chalked up to the dub or the theater I saw the movie in so I won't count it against it. Overall it seemed generic and did not live up to the importance the movie put on itself.
