Ryû to sobakasu no hime (2021)
Slow, cliché and pretty
The pace was deadly slow, the movie could have been half an hour shorter and I don't think it would have lost anything (it has a lot of static frames, sometimes I thought my screen or internet was the problem). The message was trying to be oh-so-deep but all the relationships seemed very shallow and unjustified. I'm realising this kind of development is part of the tradition of the Japanese animated movies, they all follow the same patterns. Very pretty, interesting design of characters and backgrounds but with themes, plots and scripts very underdeveloped.
It made me laugh that the mark in Suzu's face changed of side along the movie.
Sayonara no asa ni yakusoku no hana o kazarô (2018)
A waste of time
If you are superficial enough to stand two hours of pretty scenarios supporting a messy story, then this movie is for you.
The storyline doesn't have cohesion, it's full of plotholes and there are random skips of time. You will not get explained anything: you'll have to guess it all.
There are a lot of characters -and I'm all about the more the merrier- but they all somehow manage to fall short: they are superficial, some of them don't even names, their apparitions are very convenient for the plot and they don't get developed at all. Some of their conflicts are problematic, such as suggestions of incestuous feelings and obsession over the "you shouldn't cry" motto (even when they try to make you cry over and over).
A pretty, hollow movie.
A.I. Rising (2018)
A poorly executed male fantasy
The movie can be broken down in a few points: repetitive scenes with light moving up and/or sex, the same scene once and once again of the cyborg charging naked, depressing and oversimplified grey scenery, a plain and boring main character and of course, the classic male fantasy of owning and liberating woman, playing the heroes when they are really just trying to please themselves (as the tagline says: he fell in love and turned her in a person).
Fuse: teppô musume no torimonochô (2012)
Engaging animation, not as engaging storytelling
As long as animation goes, this movie is fantastic. The colours, landscapes and style in general is quite mesmerizing, which is why I decided to watch it (it didn't disappoint in this respect). I think it portrays a pintoresque and lively view of the busy capital of medieval Japan.
The characters are lovable, but some of their interactions and decisions -especially during the last half of the movie- seem rushed and undeveloped. The pace is off, regularly I found myself bored, wondering how much time was left. The storytelling was lacking some order and structure- as much as I enjoy the espontaneity of seamingly unstructured stories, there is need for some kind of line to follow to make the mysteries and plot twists more appealing.
Despite these flaws, this movie deserves more attention. I'm sure the fans of studio Ghibli will love it, so I highly recommend it to all of you Ghibli fans out there!
Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs (2019)
A fun, positive movie
I like how the movie averted the trope of "chubby shy insecure girl", the animation was on point, character design simple but good enough, with positives messages for kids regarding body positivity. It also had some good plot twists that I liked a lot.
Being pickier, its plot is a bit weak and loose in some parts, the songs are poorly included in the progression of the story, character development is a bit messy and I saw a suspicious amount of similarities to Mother Gothel and Rapunzel.
As a whole, the movie is pretty enjoyable and a fun watch for an evening with/out the kids.
Hauru no ugoku shiro (2004)
Just a pretty face
This movie falls short in what should be the main reason to make a movie: it has no coherent story whatsoever. There's zero character development and they start to care for each other for no reason.
They adapted the original story to be a critique on war, but they failed even on that. Howl fights against a few warships and then what? That's a superficial strategy to fight war, just as superficial as the whole movie. In the end, the war is over as if it where a mere whim of the king's magician!
The only parts of the movie that actually get to your heart are the ones that they got from the book. Such a waste of plots.
The aesthetic is beautiful, but they should put more effort on the character's facial expressions and the script, because a pretty movie with no plot is just a waste of time and money.
The Book Thief (2013)
A lot of potencial wasted
The movie has good scenery and seem to be historically correct, but it fails in the acting. The main character seems plain and doesn't evolve at all during the movie (I know to cast a child is hard, but they failed hard on that).
The characters doesn't get the proper deepness they need to the public to feel closer to them (except maybe Rosa and perhaps Rudy), they doesn't walk comfortably in their world, their actions doesn't seem natural and justificated.
Maybe it was just me, but the accent and the mix of languages doesn't quite fit in, especially considering that they were on Germany and they were on war against English people!, they should just make everyone speak english as if it were a translation (though this is my personal preference)
