The Sopranos: The Test Dream (2004)

Uncle?
24 September 2023
A good episode, but the dream part wasn't engaging enough to my taste. Because it was a dream anything was possible, and it didn't lead up to something. I found it a bit boring and was glad the dream was finally over TBH. Still, I enjoy the acting of Tony so much that I like to watch any part he's in.

What struck me before, and again in this episode: in The Sopranos, cousins refer to each other as uncles of their children. But an uncle is one's parent's brother, not one's parent's cousin.

If your cousin has a child, then you and that child are 'second cousins'. So, for example, Tony B and AJ are second cousins.

Steve Buscemi?
12 September 2023
As much as I like this show and this episode too, I wonder why Tony's cousin had to be played by Steve Buscemi. Apparently all actors are of Italian descend so that must be the reason. But as an actor, Buscemi really isn't very good. For example he has a tic that I first noticed in Boardwalk Empire: he pressed his lips together after having spoken a line. He probably developed that in real life because of his weird teeth. But as an actor one should get rid of those things: you're supposed to be another person!

Beside that, Buscemi is a very odd cast in this maffia role, with his pale, skinny, meek appearance.

I'm extremely grateful James Gandolfini is the main character in this series!

Boring and clumsy
15 April 2022
Nothing happened in this episode, nor was it suspenseful. And the acting is so so clumsy and unrealistic! A police officer is interrogating Ulrich, he is asking a question and remains silent before asking another question. In real life Ulrich would have started answering the first question. Here, he is just an actor knowing the other actor has another line and just waits for it. Jesus, acting is supposed to imitate real life.

Another thing: being in the cave, Ulrich, desperate to find his missing son, heard a distant voice in the cave. He then DOESN'T SHOUT BACK! That is extremely unlikely, bc he is a parent wanting nothing more than the return of his child.

It's very bad, sometimes I felt like I was watching an amateurish play.

Lacks subtlety
22 January 2022
It's interesting enough, and the setup is the same as the UK version: separate cases with a suspect in the interrogation room. But the German version of Criminal lacks the subtlety of the UK version, as do the Spanish and French versions. Besides, the acting isn't as good as in Criminal: UK.

Also funny: some of the actors in Criminal: Spain have enormous noses. In Holland (or any other northern European country), they would never be cast to act in a series like this BC they would be considered not goodlooking enougd.

Racist?
9 October 2021
For the first one and a half episode of series 3 I thought both Wayne and Roland were reasonable characters. But all of a sudden they take an innocent man somewhere to beat him up secretly and threaten him. Why didn't they question him at the police station? They would have found out he was innocent and should have left him alone. Moreover, he accused them of treating him badly bc he was white. Therefore, Wayne considered him a racist. Huh??? So accusing someone of racist behaviour means you are a racist yourself??? What stupid reasoning, saying a lot about how distorted all this has become.

And I don't know yet, but I GUARANTEE that the eventual killer is white.

Great dialogues, well acted
26 September 2021
Just finished watching the 1st series. I thought both leading characters are very good actors. The tone of this season is a bit dark, which is great. I particularly liked Martin's marital problems. Even more so than I did the main storyline of the search for the killer. Some episodes I rated 7, some of them 9.

What I didn't like is that weirdo psycho killers in series like these are ALWAYS white. I find that unrealistic and not very fair to use just one race for criminals like that.

I didn't fancy the abundant use of 'ominous' music either. Of course it is much more suspenceful to use no music at all when showing e.g. Just a house in the woods imo.

Last but not least, I think it would be better to use realistic motives for the murders that take place. Nowadays storyline makers come up with the craziest murder motives. But what's wrong with an oldfashioned motive like the prospect of a big sum of money of the fear of discovery of something hidden? Those are the motives in real life. In my opinion that would be all the more intruiging.

Reminded me a bit of Carnivale
24 February 2021
What a great show this is! You find yourself in the twenties immediately: the music, the city, the clothing, the interests in dwarfs, fortunetellers, etc. It reminded me a little of Carnivale, the great show about a travelling circus in the twenties. However, Steve Buscemi is a miscast. He's just too friendly in real life it seems to be the bully he's supposed to be in the show. His lines may be the ones of a bully, but his eyes remains friendly when talking. I'm afraid he is just not a personality or actor enough to be the centre of a show like this.

What I do like very much are the witty, intelligent dialogues!

What amateurish police
10 January 2021
I found it hilarious how the police station had a prison cell with no privacy at all opposite the counter for citizens who need the police. Other than that, it lacked any suspence, and the characters were not very realistic at all, doing things out of the blue just for the sake of the story line. I would suggest only to watch this if you like looking at a lot of snow ;-)

Well acted and eventful but very unrealistic
28 July 2020
What a great actor Idris Elba is! He is so compelling in his presence and so natural while acting. He really is the star of the show. But sometimes I think the way he's supposed to have figured out leads is very exaggerated. He knows a woman is a killer bc she didn't jawn along with him??? Come on. The same applies for his knowing that the killer of several women should be a taxi driver, bc those women trusted him. What? So the killer can't be a doctor, an IT helpdesk employee, a notary etc? What's more, it is striking that the criminals and suspects until now are all white. That doesn't seem very realistic. Imagine it would be the other way round. I don't think treating races differently is a good thing. Having said that, I have watched only six episodes, so I'm in for a surprise!

What happened in season 3
6 June 2020
For seasons 1 and 2 I had wanted to gave a 9 of 10: this series was so realistic yet very gripping, I was constantly on the edge of my seat. A lot of twists and turns that somehow seemed very real. But season 3 is completely different: there is ominous music even in uneventful scenes, it has become very far-fetched at times, there is hardly any tension. It's seems to have lost its magic. Too bad.

Excellent acted series
15 April 2020
What phenomenal actors are Jason Bateman and Laura Linney! I really love watching it because their acting is top notch and their dialogues very realistic. However, this Ruth character is a miscast. No way a meek-eyed, doll-like girl like her would be a murderous woman with so much prevalence. What's supposed to be thrilling almost becomes laughable. But the series lacks more subtlety. A pastor (or a vicar I would rather say, since he's married) who curses and uses foul language?? Or Wendy who extensively negotiates about her bonus with the broker in the presence of his dominant mother, who is her competitor? Please writers, just try to make it a bit more credible.

Still marvellous

This still is an awesome show, with so much attention paid to the way everything looks in those days and palaces. The story telling is great too. However, I do wonder why this Philip seems to speak with his teeth closed :-/

What an unbelievable actor is Antonio de la Torre! He has such a natural way of acting. The film itself was fantastic too.
