Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Amazing! Just amazing!
Excellent film, really really enjoyed it. So well done. The acting was excellent, cinematography was top notch and the writing and production was just brilliant. Realistic and extremely harrowing and evocative. You really bond with the characters, feel their terror and their anguish.
Such attention to detail as well. Even the tiniest details were thought about and nailed, for example even the German belt buckles were completely historically accurate, even though you only catch the shortest glimpse. The little things like that help to immerse you in the film even more.
The soundtrack was great, really drawing you in. Mixing the rousing with the somber, and slowly building the tension, while all the time being slightly mechanical to really emphasise the unnaturalness of the 'Great' war.
Though not strictly a remake with some departure from the book, honestly I don't think it matters here (and I am normally a real stickler for being faithful to source material). There isn't much from before the boys get to the front, and there are some timeline issues, but it is still an excellent war film in its own right. I think those giving it 6 and below are being overly critical of these issues / changes.
The entire cinema was silent when it was over, nobody said a thing as we all left. Many people just sat there in their seats 'shell-shocked' so to speak.
Watch it in the cinema if you can for the full effect. A must watch. Saving Private Ryan levels of good.
The War Below (2021)
Surprising good 👍🏻
The film is actually very good for its tiny budget - surprisingly good to be honest.
It's obviously no 1917, and I wasn't sure want to make of it at first, but you get into it and I'm glad I stuck with it, because by the end I was totally engrossed. A poignant ending and a fine tribute to the miners of WWI.
I would recommend it, and would equally watch it again.
Endeavour: Terminus (2021)
A twist on a classic
A twist on the classic creepy house 'And then there were none' type story. Loved it.
Collateral (2018)
Interesting story, pity about the politics
I was really looking forward to this as I love my murder mysteries and think Carrie Mulligan is a great actress. The plot was interesting with good acting and solid pacing, however the constant liberal political point scoring and virtue signalling was just too much. I felt like I was being beaten over the head by the writers socialist agenda to the point that it detracted from the series.
If you like a weekly dose of anti-establishment, anti-army, anti-Iraq war, anti-America, anti-MI5, anti-immigration control, with a sprinkling of anti-men type drama, this is the show for you. I will endeavour to see this series out, but I suspect I may not make it.
