Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
Typical Taika Waititi humor
If you don't find his other movies funny, than you won't find this movie funny either. His humor reminds me of that college roommate that thinks that annoying you with tedious silly banter is hilarious. It's like poking you with a finger and asking you to be tickled and laugh. There were some touching moments to this movie and I find that's where this director's strength lies. Not so much with humor. At least that's my two cents worth. Humor is so subjective. It must be, considering this movie's high review of 7.8. I give it a generous 5 for its artistic direction. Btw- I think that Waititi's best film is What We Do In The Shadows, but that may be to Jermaine Clement co-directing as his show Flight of the Concords is hilarious.
Reacher: A Night at the Symphony (2023)
If you've read the books then you know they are hit and miss
And the book that this series was based on IMHO was not one of the better ones. They could have picked so many better Reacher books to base the second season off of and don't ask me why they chose "Bad Luck and Trouble". In some ways I get it. This book fleshes out Reacher's history as a MP Special Investigator in the military and tells us why he's so darned good at figuring stuff out (or not- he hates guessing passwords). However, back stories are not always the most exciting and just like the book, it lacks good pacing. I waded through the book and to my lack of surprise I knew I would have to wade through this season. It's been chapter for chapter pretty faithful to the book thus far, so unless they delete some of the lackluster banter and get to some cliffhangers, it's going to wind up being a weak season and I hope the series doesn't get canceled because of it. Like I said, there are some good books that the seasons could be based off of- "Running Blind" "Echo Burning" or "The Hard Way" to name a few.
Into the Badlands: Chapter XII: Leopard Stalks in Snow (2017)
The tiresome agenda has finally shown itself
I was immersed in the storyline for so many episodes, thinking to myself, wow! They actually made a show that doesn't have all of the agendas they're shoving down people's throats these days. Almost every show now whether streaming or otherwise has to have the obligatory gay or lesbian scene or character. They finally included it in this episode with a lengthy and up close lesbian kiss by one of the main characters. When is Hollywood going to really wake up and realize that we don't need that in every single piece of entertainment? We all know gay and lesbian people and some are even close friends. Do I want to visit their bedrooms and peek in on them? That's another matter entirely and should be considered before creating entertainment for the general public.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Enjoyed it but too many plot holes
No doubt it was a great time at the movies. But there were some undeniable, glaring plot holes that had me scratching my head after the whole thing was said and done. I won't go into them here, as other reviewers have already rightly touched on them, and I want to keep my review spoiler free for those who haven't seen it and are simply thinking about seeing it. You will be entertained, but you kind of have to check your brain at the door. As far as this movie being on par with Endgame: sorry, not quite. And that's just the honest truth without the "Spidey Fan Service" (and I love Spider-man as a character). If you are a Spider-man fan, like me- definitely check it out. If you couldn't care less about Marvel movies or Spider-man, then I would go see another movie that would better suit your cinematic pallet.
Koyaanisqatsi (1982)
Probably better to watch if high on drugs
This is probably what movies in the future will be like when Hollywood runs out of ideas.
The Chosen (2017)
The best interpretation of Jesus on film so far
Great production values and an attention to detail bring this independent made series come to life. Every character as an heir of authenticity to it that hasn't been achieved since Mel Gibson'sThe Passion. What makes this series so engaging is two-fold:
First, the acting is great. Normally with faith based productions, poor acting abounds and it's very difficult to see past it to truly enjoy and be moved by the film. This series has actors who literally become each character they play. You can tell they did their research as to what made their characters tick.
Secondly, this is one of the few productions that portrays Jesus as not just a two-dimensional person. In other words, this program shows Jesus as someone who you can actually feel like you could strike up a conversation with instead of someone who is portrayed as overly stoic or overly fanatical.
See it for yourself. These are just my insights. If you've been turned off by the way Christ has been portrayed in other films, you'll see that this is the Jesus that is in the Bible and not just one that was put on film from what a director heard from his childhood in Sunday School.
I Can Only Imagine (2018)
Most Well Made Faith Based Movie Ever Made
Saw this today and was very impressed by the acting, production values, and most of all the STORY. After seeing many faith based movies that either were poorly produced or poorly acted, this one gets it right. Many will be afraid to see this movie because they will think it's just another Christian movie that's going to preach at them. This movie comes from the heart pure and simple and will speak to anyone who has had a dream and has had influences in their life that has told them they can't achieve it. More importantly though is that it's a movie about forgiveness and the power to change. One of the best dramas I have seen in a LONG time. VERY inspiring. See it for yourself.
