Doctor Who (2005)
Love it... And a small but desperate plea to BBC
I wrote this a while ago now, and I just needed to add to it after hearing about Russel T.'s decision to leave the series, and it potentially ending after Season Four... I LOVE this show, and I just needed to... in some way, have a small protest to this decision. EVEN IF RUSSEL T. LEAVES... PLEASE DO NOT END THE SHOW!! As later stated in this comment, it is such a change and so fresh compared to all this other drivel we are fed these days! I was so happy the other day when I watched BBC Entertainments 'Next Month' and to find out that they were showing The Christmas Invasion, it may be an old episode to many viewers but out here we have only been given up to the end of Season One so far, and I am eagerly anticipating watching the Season Three finale's when I am in England next week. I really thought that after FINALLY finding a show that I can easily enjoy, that it would stick around for a while... I only discovered it this Janurary and now I've discovered that it is probably going off air next year... a bit of a stab in the heart if you ask me...
Personally, the standard of TV today is slipping, and fast. Living in Asia as a teenager, I find it hard even with all the 100 or so channels we have to choose from, to find one that shows a decent programme on.
There are maybe around five or six television series that interest me in the slightest. With all this garbage such as Heroes (and I must point out that the best thing about this show is Eccelstons on/off appearances), Prison Break, Desperate Houswives.. I am sure that many people, who are not so easily amused by the everyday, standard television show, do find it hard to find a new, and interesting show.
Here is your answer. I haven't watched much of the old Doctor Who series, in fact I've only watched the first four episodes of the first ever series, all the way back from 1963. And of course, as most who have watched the old episodes, I love the old Doctor Who episodes to. But this new Doctor Who is, as expected, different.
I know many people dislike the first episode, 'Rose', and to be honest, I was a little worried when I first watched it earlier this year. But I quickly warmed to the series, and became very upset with the fact that BBC Entertainment stopped at only the first series. So irritated that I have taken every opportunity to watch Doctor Who by buying, renting, and borrowing all the DVDs I can of the second series. And from the clips I have seen from the new series, this has become one of my favourite shows to date.
Its different, from other shows on these days, and also it has regenerated itself from the old series into a show that young people nowadays are more likely to enjoy. Some more hardcore fans of the old series would find that this new series is pathetic to them, but that is the difference in generations, and there will always be some dispute over this.
As a 21st century show, Doctor Who is doing brilliantly, and I feel that I can watch it as many times I wish, and not once have I been bored out of my mind with the show. And with the budget their size, the special effects are pretty amazing for sci-fi show... especially in comparison to many of the other shows that I see.
Casanova (2005)
Witty, heart-wrenching, and all round fantastic mini-series
Of course, every bio-pic has some inconsistencies, and there's no denying that Casanova does have quite a number. However, to document someones life, especially someone such as Casanova, is always difficult. Russel T. Davies has done a superb job in bringing this character to life and choosing only selections of the full story. The storyline is funny, sweet, and sad... but with an extra kick that keeps the audience entertained throughout. There was a complaint in another comment, stating that Russel T. has issues with writing about homosexual relationships, but I would like to draw your attention to Torchwood, a series in which there are quite a few homosexual elements in, which proves any of these claims, that he is in some way against showing homosexual relations on TV, are completely incorrect. The acting is fantastic, with some of Daivd Tennants reactions and movements cracking you up before he even has to say his line.
Before concluding this, I feel the need to state that I have only watched this Casanova TV mini-series and the recent Casanova movie and to compare the two on their accuracies (although the movie did not boast itself as a bio-pic) that this version far surpasses as the accurate account. Clearly some out there feel that they have seen better versions of Casanova films/series however, any Casanova film will be judged as a biography, regardless of what the director says or not. I enjoyed the recent Casanova film, but the mini-series blew me away, and to say that I merely enjoyed this version of Casanova would be a crime. Russel T. Davies is proving himself to be a brilliant script writer and works brilliantly with David Tennant, whether in Casanova or Doctor Who.
The Cave (2005)
I saw the trailer and I was right, it sucked!
My friend and I were supposed to watching The Longest Yard but all the showings were too late for our curfew's or already booked up. So as I last resort of being the only other thing we had heard of (because we live in Asia and are not Asians ourselves, and cannot speak Chinese etc.) anyway, back to the point, so as it was the only other familiar thing to watch we watched it and what did we do? We chattered and laughed and talked about school whilst making fun of the movie.
If this was meant to be scary then it failed miserably. Although things like The Ring and Ju-On don't scare me this took me to the next level of laughing. It was hard for me not to laugh.
It was too typical of a 'scary' movie, there was no originality in the movie itself. Stuck somewhere remote (in this case a cave), no connection with everyone else, and something bad goes wrong(the disease thing and weird animals).
This might have shocked me when I was young or had never watched something like this before but after all those times of having the same thing repeated, you get bored of it.
If I ever watched it again it would have to be with friends so we could sit back and chat whilst it played so that I wouldn't have to endure its boredom alone.
To those who enjoyed, have you ever watched The Ring or The Amnityville Horror? I'm sorry but I just don't see the point of the movie, and I don't know if this would be a spoiler or not but its set up for a sequel. Who would ever want to watch a sequel to such a boring movie?
