Pretty Misunderstood

Everyone seems to not get this show. Conservatives think it's hippie-dippie when it clearly has a message about the three actual hippie characters out of who-knows-how-many and their authenticity. Liberals think the show was invented to support their political ideology. White critics who just adored Black Panther with its deeply conservative message appear uncomfortable and bored by those awkward, and probably entirely accurately represented, moments of racial tension. I have seen Holly Hunter described as sometimes a "saint" by someone who could not have been paying attention, and there's a small consensus finding Duc's storyline boring and appearing to be made uncomfortable by exercise.

I'm not sure what exactly they're looking for in a modern family drama, perhaps something must faster-paced that always includes extreme character development, has everyone learning major life lessons once per episode and ends in big hugs. A lot of HBO shows don't give you that. The characters are, in fact, being developed at a reasonable pace considering how many of them there are. However, if you feel offended by aspects of the show, you won't pick up on any subtleties. That's just nature, unfortunately.

The show is an interesting glimpse into the dynamics of a family we'll never have. I do, however, dislike the 11:11. I may be ruined by the other shows that add this mystical element for intrigue and can't find a way to justify it for the entirety of the series. That's also an HBO thing and I enjoy its presence but also feel vexed that it will probably never have any actual significance. Meaning would be nice. Otherwise, very entertaining show.
