Hair Extension (2014)
It's not the Sion Sono one you wanted to see
I watched this by mistake, as I thought it was Sion Sono's Exte. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't very good either. The pacing isn't bad, but the acting is. The mystery isn't gripping or particularly well written either, as it kind of just gets slowly told to you who is behind the murders without any sleuthing done by the main character. That's not to say it was entirely awful. I did enjoy it enough. Partly because I enjoy B-movies and partly because the runtime allows for a fair amount of action to happen fairly quickly. In summary, it's a bad movie with some charm. Sadly, I was very disappointed with it due to believing it to be another movie entirely! Haha.
Strays (2023)
Barely a Comedy at all
The humor seems like it was conceived of and written by an annoying thirteen year old boy. Every single joke in the movie (with the exception of a few clever ones) was literally just a dog saying a naughty word. That's it. That's the joke. "What if animals swore all the time?" Was the actual pitch meeting for this movie, I swear...
The stale faces of the dog's (dogs arent very expressive creatures) don't lend any emotion to the characters. The story is awful and follows a tell-tale by-the-book buddy comedy approach. MC makes friends, MC has argument and splits up with friends, everyone makes up and becomes friends again. Oh yeah, and they get high at one point for the sake of inserting some goofy visuals and making the film even harder to sit through...
If your level of humor is even a notch above toilet humor and swear words, you won't enjoy this movie. Don't waste your time. It's not funny, it's just incredibly cringe.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
I liked everything but Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Very Minor Spoilers)
The plot was surprisingly good, as I was expecting some MCU multiverse hijinks but was instead given a more grounded approach to time travel. It felt like a breath of fresh air in that sense.
Madds was a good villain. He had a cool backstory and plan in this film and was well-acted.
The action was good. Not much with Indiana's whip, which is a bit disappointing. Then again, Ford is in his 80's so I understand. I enjoyed the action scenes despite their limitations.
However... Phoebe Waller-Bridge made me wanna walk out of the theatre (not really, because I payed for normal tickets and was seated in a Screen X theatre by mistake). Her lines were awful. She ate food with her mouth open and came across very cocky for no good reason. She didn't seem to deserve to be the character she was. I hated her in this movie.
Soulmeiteu (2023)
Beautifully told, acted, scored and filmed
I cried for like 2 hours after this movie and took a nap because I just didn't feel like doing anything but thinking about the film.
The acting from both Kim Da-mi (my favorite actress) and Jeon So-nee is immaculate. They carry so much emotion on their faces and convey the characters feelings perfectly.
The score is just wonderful. Every bit of music pieced throughout the movie is done so so well.
The storytelling is captivating and extremely well-paced. It builds a believable and lovely relationship between the two characters and gets you easily invested.
I've seen this film three times now and it gets better each time. The drama is believable and realistic and fits the characters experiences. You don't see movies this good that often. 10/10.
Fast X (2023)
Somehow even wose than Fast 9
I didn't think they could get any worse after the last one, but oh boy was I wrong...
This movie is pathetic and awful. That a movie can be this bad with such a great budget is just... Ridiculous and lazy. It isn't even fun.
Momoa was absolutely horrendous in this film. However, sadly, he was probably the best part of this film. He at least made me chuckle a few times.
I fell asleep near the end of the movie only to wake up and realize they brought back Gal Gadot's character from the dead. Yeah... This is getting to MCU levels of low stakes...
Also, the whole 'family' aspect of this series is even more of a joke now than it was in the earlier ones. Dom is an asshole who constantly gets his 'family' killed (but not really because they all turn back up eventually) so he can make money that he absolutely doesn't need.
Hellraiser (2022)
Absolutely Better than Expected!
You can practically taste the passion put into this film, with its slew of references to the comics, novels and OG films, as well as a nice expansion of the lore. It is a fresh, if thematically similar, Hellraiser film which stays true to the original films overall world.
The configuration being able to change and unlock the user's desire is a cool new take on the lament configuration. And, the relationship Pinhead shares with Riley in this film is reminiscent of that which the OG (Doug Bradley 👑) does with Kirsty in the original series. While it is obviously not handled as well, nor as believable (seeing as Riley is far from innocent) as the sadomasochistic relationship of Pinhead and Kirsty, Jamie Clayton's Pinhead uses Riley in the same manner; forcing her to commit heinous acts, or at least trying to force her to do so. This was a nice touch, because the films without Kirsty lacked any sort of relationships following this template; a template that, I believe, adds something to the character of Pinhead who can come off as unfeeling or bland to the uninitiated viewer. Relationships like these help to tether the viewer to the idea that Pinhead, like the protag/antag is also always looking for a new experience.
Speaking of new experiences, I was glad that the film didn't take off too quick. When it was over my sister said that they handled the reveal of the Cenobites very well, teasing at their arrival long before finally showing them. As if to make the viewer wish for a higher experience. This was very good directing imo, as the OG Hellraiser films did not have to worry about showing the Cenobites too fast because of an audience who didn't know what to expect. This film, however, knew what it's fans wanted and expected and knew exactly how long to hold out, perfect way of prolonging anticipation 👌
The Cenobite's redesigns were fantastic. I didn't know how to feel about them at first, and I -of course- prefer the original film's robed looks to the new Cenobite couture, however: the fleshy garb which they wore kept in full view the Cenobites lack of gender (a big plus imo), and the gears and such were a very nice touch; almost as if they were physically linked to the lament configuration itself.
While I feel some people may be dissapointed with the new Pinhead, the way the Cenobites look, etc. I feel that both are more accurate to Clive Barkers novels, and therefore his original vision. And yes, I prefer and will always prefer Doug Bradley and the OG film Cenobites to these ones, but there's really no excuse for hating on the designs. They are epic, and any true Hellraiser fan should enjoy them.
The film was not perfect... The last sequence where the Cenobites got locked outside a house because it was metal (???) took a liiiittle long, and the fact that Chatterer was somehow able to solve the configuration and be killed for it was... strange. However, these are quite small gripes amongst what was otherwise an incredibly strong film.
In conclusion... After having watched 10 Hellraiser films (and suffered through more than half of them) I feel as if Hellraiser is finally back. I can finally forget the abomination that was 'Hellraiser: Judgement' and move on with my life. I'm excited to see what other films this director works on in the future!
The Batman (2022)
THE MOST 'BATMAN' BATMAN FILM YOU'LL EVER SEE
If you, unlike most of those who've reviewed this film negatively, are a fan of the Batman comics and not just previous Batman film adaptations, you will be enthralled by this movie. It's captivating from start to finish, with amazing cinematography, directing and music score.
Robert Pattinson plays a perfectly aged Batman: not quite too experienced yet not inexperienced enough to be jarring. The setting is the perfect starting point for any avid DC comic reader as by exploring the Batman in only his second year of crime fighting we can avoid the uneccessary backstory as well as the BS plot armor an experienced Batman would be awarded by default. What were left with instead is a gritty, unsure and real Batman; a character we can relate to and whose successes or lack thereof are justifiable and realistic.
The majority of the film focuses on the mystery and has very little action (though what action it does have is satisfyingly violent and cerebral, packed with emotion), thus garnering reviews claiming its boring or dull. However, anyone saying that clearly hasn't read very many Batman comics. After all, he's not called, "World's Greatest Detective" for nothing.
Every actor/actress in this film gives 10/10 performance. Political ideologies and irrelevant social viewpoints of the directors are kept out of this film. Over all, it's the best Batman experience you're gonna have, period.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
All Spectacle, No Substance
Literally every disjointed and confused plotline in this film is so forced its almost impossible to watch. The directing is awful, the writing is boring and sluggish with far too much exposition to be called good in any way. Also, the villain is so unconvincing (Not by any fault of Johnny Depp) as he is written almost completely as a hero except for a single scene where he allows -out of character and purely as a throw away scene to be used as a callback whenever stating his villainy- a muggle child to be killed. I mean, at the end of the film he gives a rousing speech -the only part of the film in which I felt even a slight interest in the story- telling everyone how he does not hate muggles but wants to see wizards in power instead of them. However, he goes so far as to evidence perfect irrefutable proof that wizards SHOULD rule over muggles when he prophecies WW2. The only reason the ministry of magic refused wizards to be in control was because they were afraid a war might spark off (which they'd win, so their reservations were already unwarranted). Yet, when it is revealed that muggles will start WW2 they don't care? Basically the whole point of the movie Is that people should accept their lot in life and never stand up; power = bad, therefore Grindlwald is the bad guy. It's boring anti-philosophical drivel that tries so hard to convince you -by simply telking you- that Grindelwald is the villain and MoM is not. It simply does not work. Lastly, they messed up the entire magic system: nobody has to say anything to cast spells and literally any wizard in this series could solo the potterverse. Aveda Cedavra is the equivalent of every spell in this movie to the point it makes Voldemort look like a novice. Also, McGonagall is alive in this film 7 years before her birth? Come on...
Kaubôi bibappu: Cowboy Bebop (1998)
Possibly The Greatest Show You Will Ever See
Just wait until the end, you will be stunned. I think that is the only word for it. The final,"bang" and subsequent ED (Blue) begins the slow onset into the realization of this show's greatness and will leave you slack-jawed and, as if possessed, typing uncontrollably into google all the questions that will undoubtedly present themselves to you as that poignant star gives off its last ethereal heat.
Was it all just a dream? Cowboy Bebop is not your average anime, in fact, Its not even your average TV show; it is quite possibly the greatest piece of fine and sophisticated art you will ever lay your pretty little eyes on. In fact, I think you probably ought to watch the show once using only your right eye and once using your left; that's a little hint at something only those who have already seen this show will get, however, what I am trying to say is: you haven't watched this show until you've watched it twice.
If you are not left rumenating on the deep meaning behind Cowboy bebop and admiring the beautifully crafted and philosophical viewpoints presented therein while writing up a 10/10 review for such on IMDB, then I must say, you just didn't get it.
Bang.
Bates Motel (2013)
Arguably the best show I have ever seen!
Bates Motel is a masterpiece, it pulls you in right from the start and me being someone who hasn't even watched Psycho did not know what to expect. It is beautifully scripted and acted, Vera plays her role of Norma Louise Bates perfectly, she is a beautiful and wonderful mother whom loves Norman more than anything in the world. Freddie Highmore can do no wrong in this show, he play Norman so well, his awkward character, his weird quirks, his insanity, its all just so beautiful to watch.
Any and all of you who have watched Psycho, don't look at this as it being a redoing of the original because it will not stay completely faithful to the movies if at all on a lot of subjects, watch this as a complete and utter reimagining and reboot of the films because honestly, I know for a fact the movies cant be nearly as good as this.
The way Norman progresses as we watch is just perfect, some people would say he is sick but I would say he is a "Decent" man. Honestly I look at him as a good character with a high moral compass throughout the entire show, he truly is a beautiful and complex character.
The relationship between Romero and Norma is fantastic, I never know what to expect going into the next episode, seeing just how much all of the characters develop and change throughout is crazy!
The ending to the series is perfect, left me crying, I cannot get over how good this show is, I never thought anything would top 'Breaking Bad' but this ties with it to be honest; It is a perfect 10/10, I don't see how it could have improved upon or done anything better.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Rei (2009)
A great season!
Now yes, episode one is stupid and I would that it had not been included but dice killing chapter 1-3 is amazing! This season of When they cry is absolutely epic!
If you loved When they cry seasons 1-2 you will love this, it is nail-bitingly good and seeing the shock of Rika's death after all her hard work is just shocking, I remember seeing it myself, my jaw dropped and I couldn't move for a while, watching how things go from there is both sad and exciting and exactly what I would expect from When they cry!
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira (2011)
Meh, disappointing..
When they cry in my honest opinion is the greatest anime of all time, however season 3 (Kira) is really not very good whatsoever. It kind of made me upset it was even made to begin with, after ending such a beautiful series adding these episodes was not needed at all, if I remember correctly there is only one episode I enjoyed, the rest were all such fan-service, which I am not a fan of.
These episodes are stupid, have nothing to do with the main plot of When they cry and make no sense, they taint When they cry's perfection a little in my opinion and should honestly be avoided.
Higurashi no naku koro ni: Kai (2007)
Perfect ending
When they cry could not have ended any better, I will not spoil anything but I will say that this season does not disappoint.
If you are someone who watched and loved When they cry only because of the gore then you don't really appreciate the beauty of the anime and will be disappointed with season 2. It is much less gory and violent than the previous season and that is not a downside, season 2 delves into your questions and answers them, exposing the truth and leaving you breathless, all the questions you had about the first season will be answered and you can put your mind at ease as you watch everything unfold.
The animation and voice acting is just as good as before and the story just as immersive and intriguing, just as in season 1 you will feel as if you are suffering and struggling alongside your favorite characters. It truly is a perfect anime.
Higurashi no naku koro ni (2006)
The greatest horror anime of all time
When watching When they cry for myself I binged so much; Watching 14 episodes before 1 PM, waking up early to see as much as I could. Every episode leaves you wanting more, it is very mysterious and can be quite confusing but looking at that as a negative would be idiotic.
The characters are lovable and yet very creepy, disturbing and sick as well; I don't want to spoil anything because you really should give this a shot; you will not be disappointed!
As I said earlier though, it can be very confusing and it left me bewildered, almost nothing is answered even at the end and that is why you must be sure to watch when they cry:Kai (season 2) once you complete this.
This anime will make you feel sick to your stomach at times and will make you want to die because of how cute it is at others, I laughed, I cried, its a very complex and beautiful work of art with just the right balance of morbidity, mystery and fun.
Animation: 10/10 It makes you feel all sorts of freaked out, absolutely amazing and suits this style of anime perfectly.
Voice acting: 10/10 There is never a moment where you feel as if the voice actors don't care, every scene is engaging and awesome and the cry's and screams of our beloved antagonists will never leave our minds.
Re-watch(?): 10/10 I am actually planning to re-watch it soon myself and it has only been a year since I saw it. It is amazing, be sure to pay close attention to it because there is so much going on, you don't want to get lost and forget things. Even if you watch kai (season 2) some things (not essential things, don't worry) will be left unsolved, if you find yourself (like me) hungering to know all there is about When they cry, feel free to go and read the manga series which in English is called (wont let me say Japanese name) "When Seagulls cry", this is a different story line but it features some of the same characters, it is not a redoing of the anime.
You will not find an anime better than When they cry.
