Like usual suspects it doesn't get good until the end
13 May 2021
Honestly I was pretty bored in some episodes but the ending got me. It's one of those shows where you have to see the end to appreciate the entire show. If you watched usual suspects and didn't watch the last 10 mins you'd probably think it sucked too. People need to be more patient. I think most reviews on here, people didn't get past half way. However, it's by no means an amazing show. No cliff hangers at the end of episodes making me want more. I kinda had it playing in the background and got to the end and realized it wasn't trash. It's not like marvel movies, or the boys and brightburn. It's closer to watchmen but different. You have to like super heroes and want to understand the familial aspect and relationships between heroes when they were regular humans and how they changed after acquiring their powers to appreciate this one. It's hella slow and I almost didn't finish it. Not exactly binge-worthy. I wouldn't recommend unless this niche is something you're looking for.

Underrated
13 April 2021
Of all the monster movies I've seen, this is one of the better ones. I wasn't expecting much since it was rated so low but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the movie. It's pretty scary and it's got a very unique monster that hasn't been done before. Most of the movie, they only show glimpses of what it looks like. Hell, even at the end you don't know exactly what it is, but that's the beauty of it. One of the human characters is pretty scary too. Definitely give it a chance. Especially if your tired of the cliche bunch of college friends go on a road trip and bad things happen kinda movies.

Awesome show with some flaws

Warning: Spoilers
I was impressed by how funny this show was. They always drop some nerdy or situational humor when you don't expect it. I love the sets and costumes they used and the portrayal of historical figures. You really feel immersed into that time. History books can only do so much to describe these heroic historical figures and the show does an awesome job giving life to them. Most of the characters I enjoyed. Wyatt was frustrating to watch. He's such a hot headed moron that sets the team back. It's unreal how unprofessional and inconsiderate he is yet he gets Lucy at the end. I would've liked to see him sacrifice himself and Flynn get with Lucy in the end. I also liked how they shed light on political issues they had in the past and highlighted how important certain events were to history and how they affect us in present day. Where the show is weak is the danger. The main characters all had very durable plot armor, it didn't ever seemed like they were in actual danger. Having seen 'the boys' before watching this and knowing that it's by the same writer, I was expecting otherwise, considering how dangerous life was in the past. When watching 'the boys' you were always on the edge of your seat, you didn't know who'd be killed off next. Their importance in the main cast was irrelevant. I get it though, this show is intended for a younger audience. The great things about this show outshine the flaws, all in all I recommend it to everyone who is interested in history and sci Fi.

Might not be as good at the 1st but I was intrigued and entertained.

I enjoyed seeing a continuation of John's story and seeing how he lived outside the cabin. It's definitely not the same as the 1st movie but I don't think it's trying to be. It'd be awfully boring if they went back to the same cabin and had another discussion the entire movie. I particularly like the scene at the end when john was kidnapped and met with hostility. Beyond the annoying college kids, unresolved ending and odd post credit scene, I liked the messages behind the movie. John just wanted to live his life and not be bothered, but being immortal and having such a wealth of knowledge he becomes the centre of attention. People are curious and they cannot help but become fascinated by him. Some going to great lengths that are out of character just to figure him out. And some trying to hurt him because his truth, "the truth", conflicted with what someone believes in their heart. People claim to want to know the objective truth when they only want confirmation that "their" truth that they've committed to is true. And they will kill you for it.

i wanted to like it but it gets in its own way

There are aspects of this movie that are really good and aspects that are really bad. i want to recommend this film to other people but after the end i've concluded that it'd be a bad idea... i really loved the costumes, world building, special effects, some of the jokes, the subplots and how dark the movies was. what i didn't like was the terrible forced jokes, cringey moments (some are pretty long and i question wtf is this sh**?) and annoying characters that were included for comic relief but were just pathetic. it gives off the vibe that it's a kids' movie but it's extremely violent and gorey at the same time. it's a mess that's somewhere in between. there were definitely scenes i really enjoyed but the bad ones outweighed the good ones. i wondered if i would've liked this film as a kid but i think the answer would still be no. i do think there is a possibility that this could become a cult classic because it's got a very particular flavor and certain people would like it. that person is just not me.

I actually thought the ending was fitting and I'll tell you why
23 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't think this show deserves the amount of hate it gets. The last season was definitely flawed and there were things I didn't like about it, but if you see the vision the producers had for the show you'd realize it was quite meaningful what they did. Given the amount of time they had to tell the rest of the story, I thought they did what they had to.

The last season focused on how John Smith got to his position and how his story ends. Whatever path he was going to choose, he wanted to do the best he could for his family. Either choice was bad. Whether he decided to escape and hide out in the neutral zone forever or join the Nazis, neither were ideal. The scene where baby Thomas is crying because he had nothing to eat showed a sense of urgency. John didn't have time to "sleep on it" and think through what their family was going to do. He had to make a choice fast. He didn't conform with the ideas of Nazism at the time but decided he'd try to do it for a while until he found a better option. One thing lead to another, as life does and he ended staying there longer than intended. He found great success working in the Nazi Reich and could provide for his family more than he ever could've at the expense of his humanity. When he goes to the alternate reality where Thomas was alive, we can't help but feel emotional because we see John genuinely is a loving father. He tries to stop Thomas from joining the military and not making the same mistakes he did and we question whether he's changed by the experience but no, he kills Himmler and becomes Reichfuhrer and is irredeemable. There were a lot of obstacles in his way that were life and death situations but he triumphed time and time again to gain more and more power. He was a survivor and a really good one. He gained so much momentum he didn't know how to stop, as demonstrated in the final episode and them being on a high speed rail as a metaphor. The only way he could be stopped was by a 3rd party (Resistance) and his wife he trusted with his life betraying him so his train would be "derailed".

I don't think it was any coincidence that his name was "John Smith". John Smith is a generic name that's typically used as examples for anybody. The significance of the story is to demonstrate to the viewer that anybody could've been "John Smith" and committed the same atrocities he did in the name of family. It all began with a "way out" to help his family, but in the end it became so much more and consumed him. After all that had happened with his wife and son dying and the realization of what he had become, the only way he could find peace was through death and he killed himself. In real life, death is like that. There usually isn't a dramatic grand speech. It's the weight of all his sins in one moment and the realization that after all that he sacrificed, it couldn't save the thing he tried to set out and save. So the choice he made and the journey he embarked on was all for nil. Despite him thinking that sacrificing his humanity for the greatest opportunity for his family being the best choice. He was wrong. He became the worst version of him of all the alternate realities. There was no way to undo all the evil he'd done. It was a little anticlimactic but it was real. In the real world, most of us are not gonna have the power to commit the evils that John did, but we can certainly make mistakes in our own life in the name of family. Even if it seems like it's gonna be something temporary, it can spiral out of control. We can all relate to John Smith in some way. Which is why he's one of the greatest antagonists in TV history and also why I thought this ending was appropriate.

Enjoyed it for what it is
23 April 2020
This show isn't as dark as Black mirror which people compare it to but more comedic and light and i enjoyed it. It's intended for a younger audience and doesn't give you the feeling of dread at the end of an episode. It's like a thrill ride. It reminded me of goosebumps and are you afraid of the dark (2 shows i loved growing up) but modernized and primarily focusing on sci fi. There were some noticeable themes of inclusion to give people of certain sexual orientation more representation but they weren't intrusive. I kinda liked that they added that because it allows viewers a glimpse into what it's like living their lives meanwhile telling a compelling story the viewers can relate to. It's a pity it's only 6 episodes. I'd love to see more of this.

Gave it a chance and regretted it. Cut your losses early and move on.

Endured this snoozefest for 10 episodes to conclude that this show's an utter disappointment and I definitely won't be back for S2. I really like sci-fi shows and movies that deal with time travel paradoxes, space, cosmic horror and alternate realities. Unfortunately this was not one of them.

From the first episode I felt bored but since I invested an hour watching it I decided to continue to see if it gets better. After more episodes in, I still wasn't intrigued but decided to "give it a chance" like the good reviews suggested. If you're like me and didn't like it in the beginning, it's likely you won't like the end either. The reveal doesn't come until the end of the season and honestly it doesn't justify the boredom I had to sit through. I really wanted to enjoy it and care but it was difficult and a real test of patience. I didn't like any of the characters... I found Melanie Lynskey's performances especially cringeworthy. Every time she was on screen I hoped it'd be over soon because she always has this clueless look on her face and her voice is annoying to listen to. They try so hard to add mystery by not having Bill's character speak and giving off weird facial expressions so you're kept guessing until the later episodes when he easily could've spoken earlier. I can't believe I wasted so much time watching this. It's a good thing I wasn't entirely focused and this was more background noise accompanying other stuff I was doing. It's still time I'll never get back. Next time I come across a bore like this, I'll definitely cut early.

If you're looking for a good mindbending horror sci fi show to watch that you'll care about go watch 'Dark' on Netflix instead. That is leaps and bounds better and not a complete waste of time like this. You'll thank me later.
