King of the Road (2016)
Self-indulgent boys-own tedium
If you want to see a group of men-children this is the show for you. Sure the skate board action scenes are okay but the people - all male - are soooo boring and spend all their time spouting ridiculous gobbledegook laughing at inane comments, especially when an injury occurs. What 's particularly annoying is the self-referential focus of these 20-something year old jocks. These guys seem to find it amusing to trash public spaces by running their skateboards along public handrails, seats, etc thinking nothing about who has paid to build and maintain them. Of course, these guys also don't give a toss about the incredible noise and inconvenience they cause because, hey, they're so freakin' cool only squares wouldn't get it. Of course, these intrepid individualualist free spirits don't think twice about going to a public hospital when they get banged up and, naturally dude, it would way uncool to wear a helmut. Give me strength.
Barons (2022)
Crikey mate, more cringeworthy Aussie TV
I wanted to like this show but good grief, it exemplifies the failings of Australian script writing - characters are wooden, without depth and the dialogue is artificial and strained. Sure the surf shots are good but you can see just as good, if not better, on YouTube without the banal conversations. There's simply no nuance in how the characters are developed and plot arcs are telegraphed well ahead. It's amazing and exasperating this sort of wafer thin show gets produced - it compares embarrassingly against Scandi dramas and many other series on Netflix. When will Australian writers learn some subtlety instead of developing story lines which are so predictable? Also very interesting the numbers of other reviewers who have given this show 10/10 - all around the same day.
The 7PM Project (2009)
THE PROJECT - PAST ITS USE-BY DATE
So The Project is rating badly. This is hardly surprising. The show lost its way several years ago. Now it's a forum for cross-promotion of other 10 shows. Segments are cutsey and lightweight with little real analysis of either left wing or right wing politics. What is particularly annoying and makes us reach for the channel changer is the constant drive to be hilarious!!! Over many years, the so-called humour of panel members like Tommy Little, Emelia Rusciano, Michelle Laurie, Anthony Lehmann, Christie Swan etc has been self-serving and self-referential. Even worse, these people simply aren't funny - their humour is genuinely cringeworthy especially with fake/forced laughter. Then there are the special guest panellists like Gorgi Coghlan, Susie Youseff, Steve Price, Kate Langbroek etc who have no specialist analytical skills other than coming from the stable of usual backslapping suspects who are able to talk endlessly about themselves. I'm amazed people like Waleed Aly, Hamish McDonald, Peter van Onselen stick around - you mightn't like everything they say but at least they try to apply some analysis to news.
