Kevin Smith said he would never do Jay and Silent Bob in a movie again, but then again, George Lucas said he would never release the original unaltered Holy Trilogy on DVD either- never say never!!! The boys are back in the sequel of the movie that started it all. I gotta admit, I was skeptical, I'm a natural cynic when it comes to sequels, and after all Clerks is a cult classic. I was not disappointed in this movie at all- in fact i think it was one of Smith's best (not that he has very many great movies, although I have all of them except Jersey Girl- what can I say? He makes me laugh!) ***WARNING- SPOILERS AHEAD*** (I'll try not to give too much away) Dante starts out his normal day- STILL working at the Quick Stop, when it turns out to be anything but normal- when he opens the metal window guards, he finds the store engulfed in flames. jumping ahead in time, he is now working at Mooby's with Randall. Dante is getting ready to be married (to Kevin Smith's wife no less) and move to Florida. Randall decides to give him a special going away present in the form of a bestiality show. Jay and Silent Bob have followed them to Mooby's and provide the usual hijinks.
Jay and Silent Bob are even more background characters in this movie, and are more cliché then they have ever been (with the exception of Jay doing the "Wild Bill" in the parking lot, his actions are very predictable, and you can tell Jason Mews is following a script, rather than Jason Mews just being "Jay" like he did in the past. Despite this, they are still funny as hell Dante and Randall are much like I remember them (except in color this time) the "Battle of the trilogy" scene is hilarious. Dante, while he believes he is finally taking charge of his destiny, is obviously still taking the safe, no risk route in life, and it's obvious to everyone (especially Randall) The love twist comes into play with the character Becky Scott- we find out that Dante and Becky had a fling, and this threatens to throw a monkey wrench into Dante's safe little plan.
One of my favorite things artistically done in this movie, is the "Wizard Of Oz" effect- it starts out in black and white (like Clerks) goes to color, and ends- in black and white creating a very nostalgic feel- these are after all, Characters that Smith fans have loved for years, and I think it is fitting to see them sans-color at the end, as we remembered them. Aside from that, the film quality is wonderful, and you actually see the bigger budget in this film, all the while knowing it's still a Kevin Smith movie All in all I recommend this film highly, provided you are a fan of Kevin Smith. Definitely not the kind of movie you would want to make your first Kevin Smith movie, as it follows along the original story line of Smith's first three films- see those first (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy) at least before you see this one, otherwise you'll have no clue to the history of the main 4 (boy) characters (Becky is a new character- apparently things did not work out between Dante and Veronica) Kevin Smith fans- unite and see this movie!
