Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham (2021)
Enjoyable, educational and addicting
It's not just the good-looking and funny hosts, it's also the charm of Scotland that makes this travel show so engaging to watch. It's captured beautifully, told by Scotsmen themselves who learn more about their culture and history as the series progresses. It's just what we need to get acquainted better with Scotland beyond Outlander and Trainspotting, the inaccurate stereotypes in Braveheart and Highlander and the watered down Scottish characters in Shrek, Dr. No and countless other Brit-produced films.
Brexit: The Uncivil War (2019)
Solid script makes a convincing central character
Benedict Cumberbatch dissolves into the role as Dominic Cummings, a divisive and unlikable central character with a script that is easy to follow even for those who do not know much about Brexit. But that doesn't mean it is not smart, as it captures imperfect caricatures of politicians, lobbyists and "ordinary" people quite well.
Entertaining and intriguing watch from start to finish.
The Game Changers (2018)
Inspiring but one-sided
It was a compelling watch from start to finish and pretty convincing that I resolved to change the way I eat. It does not succeed in making me go full-vegetarian because how practical could it be? Besides, the documentary consciously avoids the word "vegetarian" and only mentions going "vegan" on occasion. The film, including all its interviewees, instead advocates for a "plant-based" diet they all happen to mention on cue. That alone leaves room for suspicion that there could be a political or commercial agenda behind its production.
For someone like me whose profession or interest does not involve muscle strength or physical endurance but relies on mental capacity, I do not feel referred to or represented in this documentary. How does this diet affect my brain? How I think? Would I have to eat more often to keep going? All of the cases presented are of athletes, professional hobbyists aiming for world records and fighters including UFC champs and gladiators of old.
Night on Earth (2020)
Great visuals, melodramatic narration
You'd only be satisfied with "Night on Earth" if you didn't see the "Planet Earth" series that Sir David Attenborough narrated. While the cinematography is compelling, each line of narr...
Howards End (2017)
One of the best adaptations I've ever seen
Hayley Atwell enchants in this brilliant and faithful BBC adaptation of EM Forster's great novel. All of the actors are very convincing in their portrayal of multi-faceted characters. I didn't want the show to end. It's a thorough examination of class and social mores, and the message is not lost in time and very much relevant today in the debate between liberals and conservatives. The human spirit, compassion and love prevail. A must-watch for period drama fans like me.
