The 1619 Project (2023)
American racism
So far the reviews here are pathetic. I doubt some reviewers have even watched the series. As a public school teacher of 25 years, I will note the following:
1) The 1619 Project is not "critical race theory". That is ridiculous.
2) The original series, the book and the TV series all have the same gaol: to present a reframing of American history from the point of view of black Americans, the descendants of slaves. It is a work of journalism, not a Ph. D thesis in US history. It succeeds in this goal, which is why many schools have added it to their curriculum.
3)Many white Americans are still in denial that systemic racism even exists today. That is their misfortune. /Ignorance of reality does not change reality. The legacy of slavery and white supremacy infects every aspect of our society. People of color know this all too well.
4) Hopefully as more people watch the series, it will enlighten and provoke, and open some minds. Then again, maybe not.
The Northman (2022)
Sick and Disturbed
The Northman is a sick and disturbed narrative with an utterly amoral worldview and attitude toward life. It's not about redressing a wrong or seeking justice. The main character is a human beast, like all the other men in the film as well. The raid he gladly takes part in is a vicious war crime including the murder of women and children. Any viewer who finds this "thrilling" is complicit and must be devoid of any moral compass themselves. It's especially awful that this pean to killing would be released as real war crimes are being committed in Ukraine every day. I find that appalling. At a time when we are struggling to understand how male human beings can do such things, a film that glories in murderous violence is disgusting. Of course many American viewers love to vicariously experience murderous violence. I've never really understood the thrill of watching men murder each other(as well as helpless women and children. It's a pretty disturbing reflection on our society and culture.
