Everest (2015)

Such an underrated movie.
18 February 2016
I'm now watching this on Redbox for the 3rd time and I think it took me this long to truly appreciate it. For all of the "experts" tearing it down about the technical aspects, it's a movie. It always bothers me when films set in these harsh conditions have actors removing their protection to show their faces, but once again it's a movie. These are the best actors and a crew that truly suffered to bring this true story to the big screen. There is no faking dealing with those conditions in order to make a film like this. The writing is top notch. This is so much more than just about the tragedy, but what actually caused it. Introducing commerce into a world it has no business in has changed the landscape of that region and created a false sense of security for fools with more money then brains. Rob Hall was a victim of Karma. He saw an opportunity to make money over the fact that those who have no business on the mountain should not be there. I think the movie really showed all aspects in what eventually created this disaster, if you wanna call it that. All of these people were there of their own volition, a disaster would be something more like the tsunami in 2004. When I see the haters of movies like this along with so many more on the IMDb, I don't get upset I just know those people have never done anything substantial in their lives and have no idea what it takes to make something like this. This is a great, very even handed telling of an amazing story in the history of this world.

Incredibly well written
18 October 2015
When I first saw this in the theatre, I thought it was too busy and Spader was a little cartoony. But on first viewing you're always comparing it to the original, so you need a time to step back. Now, I see how well written it is and how the humor really fits perfectly, considering Ultron is Stark's alter ego. I also never really thought much of Scarlett as an actor, but her scene at the beginning with the lullaby really showed an incredible range of emotions in just a small scene with great subtly. All of this is a result of great writing, both in story line and dialog, along with everyone of the actors being first rate. I'm glad to finally see comic book movies reaching the intelligence of their source material. I'm not a comic book geek but a movie lover, so I don't have any of the preconceived prejudices. I could go on and on about all the subtle inferences to modern day terrorism and America's role as the world's bully and hated cop, but I just wanted to give it the positive review it deserves.

A shame
22 May 2013
When I saw the first trailer for this it was set to Hip Hop and I was like "Why did they do that?" Well, I know cause that's what sells nowadays. When they made the next trailer they chilled on the Hip Hop and new style and it looked more like the movie I thought it would be. Obviously they were going for Zack Snyder meets L.A. Confidential and The Untouchables (none of which are bad), but even with those influences a good movie has to find it's own voice. You could tell that the original script for this probably had that. At the heart of this was a story about how the soldiers coming back from the war were having trouble adjusting and it some ways just found themselves in a new war. If they would have kept the focus more on that and stayed with more conventional old school filmmaking this would have been a really good movie. With its stellar cast and look it was pretty good, I loved a lot of the choices they made along the way. All the criticism on bad acting is unfounded, most square people have never met real life characters like Mickey Coen. Just like with Gatsby and the action movies that now put me to sleep, story and more character development would have served this movie well.

Jaded
17 May 2013
It amazes me how the generations get so Jaded. The BIG debates over this film are whether it's too much of a kid's movie and if the the CG is overwrought. The movie is full of be-headings and the breakout star is a bipolar cave dwelling cannibal. J.R.R. Tolkien created a truly Grimm fairy tale and Peter Jackson has honored it. I watched the feature length animated movie as a kid and this is without question a Masterpiece of evolution. In the theatre I laughed out loud and loved every minute of it. Now on my 5th viewing I am amazed at the sophisticated writing, telling a tale so timely with real lessons in morality, faith and honor. Occasionally we get a perfect blend of all things that make great filmmaking and this one joins that coveted list.

Lincoln (2012)
10/10
Amazing writing, I laughed throughout.
16 December 2012
I had heard so many reviews about the length and the long winded speeches by Daniel Day-Lewis, but I found this film to be a completely entertaining experience. Of course I expected the man to nail his part and finally humanize someone we really know so little about, but I didn't expect the humor. The writing was such a dead on commentary on how politics never change except in this case the two parties have changed faces. The reality of what has changed is that when it comes down to what's truly best for our country some of the other team members will jump ship. Who knows how truly accurate the film is but it rings true that when a great leader like Lincoln shows true passion for a cause enough of the other leaders would rally around him to do what's right.

Amazing cast, writing, directing, art direction, cinematography and everything else. Well done Mr. Spielberg!

Dead on!
19 April 2009
Other than the opening and closing VO (which was totally unnecessary) this movie was dead on! I know these movies about The Industry are self indulgent, but when done right they're great. Look at this cast making fun of themselves and their "art". What makes it even better is that despite an A list cast and Academy Award winning director the marketing department gave it no love.

It was nice to see Michael Wincott get a good part with this great cast, for some reason Hollywood doesn't know how to cast him.

I don't know what anyone else is thinking, but this movie made me laugh out loud more than a few times... Great Job!!

CSI before CSI
22 February 2009
I've been a fan of Lance for a long time, but since HBO came along I haven't seen many network series, so I missed this one. I would love to have Lance in my next film, so I've started watching it on the Chiller channel and it's great! This is CSI before CSI. Actually it's like Manhunter the series... Which as I've watched CSI, I've realized that's basically what it is. The lighting and tone of the shows is very similar as are the two leads. Lance's Frank Black is very reminiscent of William Peterson in Manhunter then of course CSI, but Millennium came before CSI.

Seems like this one was just a little too ahead of its time… Great show! They should definitely make a film!

Great color and style!
29 January 2009
Not to mention easily Pierce Brosnon's best performance. Of course Greg Kinnear is always great. Really, when has he really been bad? I think this film is incredibly underrated! The use of colors in this movie is something very different in today's film world where every other movie has the Payback blue filter. I also love the way they used the song by Asia. Proving that even what was once thought of as kinda cheesy can be really cool placed correctly.

I was making my first feature when this came out. Being that my film was a hit-man movie, I had to check out anything in the genre that was released. After seeing it, I'm sure it had some effect on me through the process. It was pretty cool when my film got on the IMDb that it would recommend this film if you liked mine. How any of the others relate I have no idea, making an even more interesting coincidence.
