Modern Times (1936)
A Masterpiece of Comedy and Social Insight
Charlie Chaplan confirms his genius ability in the movie Modern Times. The movie captures the wit of Voltaire, the expose abilities of Upton Sinclair, and the prophetic social insights of George Orwell.
On a more light-hearted note it is comedy at a beautiful pace and freshness. I recommend it for both the college student and the elementary grade school child.
The opening scene of the worker being symbolized by running sheep is something that Orwell put in words in Animal Farm and Roger Water and Pink Floyd put to music in the 1977 album Animals.
After viewing Chaplan's previous works such as The Circus, The Gold Rush, and City Lights, I can truly say that this is Mr. Chaplan's greatest and most relevant movie.
Mystic River (2003)
Nothing but a 2 Hour CSI / Law and Order: Criminal Intent SVU
This movie was just one BIG L----O-----N-------G CSI Episode. This movie is undoubtedly OVER-RATED. Without the big name stars and the well-known director it would be totally unnoticed and ill-received. I am not even a guy who watches the "CRIME DRAMA" but I figured out the movie immediately. This movie had one good redeeming quality and that is the role played by "DAVE's" wife: Celeste (played by Marcia Gay Harden. The opposite can be said for the acting of Sean Penn's wife (Laura Linney)...
I bet the book is much more entertaining and rewarding. Of course after seeing the movie I don't see myself turning the pages of the novel.
Kill the Moonlight (1994)
The story of Chance and his plight through life and its many hurdles.
Kill the Moonlight is a piece of artistic genius. From the story line of a "LOSER" finding his way through L.A. and the many sub-encounters that this evokes.
It is true Folk-art. It is Modern Art. And it is most importantly F-U-N. And besides that, every shot is a masterpiece of Los Angeles and Simi Valley in the tumultuous early 1990's.
I recommend this movie for anyone who needs to know more about the life of a "lost" 20 something young man living in Southern California and trying to fulfill a dream, a desire, and a passion. In fact, this movie gives more to the viewer than the so-called cult hit "Slacker".
See it for yourself--its now available on DVD!!!!!
