Harley Quinn: It's a Swamp Thing (2022)
I turned it off halfway through
Well this episode finally broke me. I've been disappointed this season, but now that disappointment has turned into disbelief. How has a show I loved so much fallen so far? It's become a relationship show, and there isn't enough meat on those bones to support show after show for an entire season.
Where is the action?
Where are the comic book stories?
Where is the funny?
Well they are sort of there(minus the funny) is you squint real hard, but in reality those are quickly discarded setups to do dull relationship humor/drama.
Oh, so yeah about the episode... Well it was so bad that I turned it off and came immediately here to do this rant.
Harley Quinn: A Thief, A Mole, An Orgy (2022)
I'm about done with this show
Oh Harley Quinn, where art thou? This season has turned into a boring romance drama instead of an action superhero comedy. Yes, the show has always been centered on Harley's love life, but there are two important differences now.
First is that there was always a strong superhero action component to drive the story forward. Now it feels like an afterthought thrown in by necessity. Nothing interesting ever happens anymore.
Then there is the main difference, which is that Harley/Joker was interesting while Harley/Ivy is boring. Harley/Joker had a built in conflict with a bite, with Joker being abusive and Harley being in denial. Harley/Ivy is what..? They are supposed to be together so they already start at the end, and there is no place for it to go. All this season has done is retread the same old ground of one or both of them getting kind of upset about something trivial while pretending not to.
And that's it. That's been this season, and that is this episode. This has gone from one of my favorite shows to one I force myself to watch in hopes that the next one will be better. I feel like I'm the one in an unhealthy relationship and in denial about it... but not for much longer.
Harley Quinn: The 83rd Annual Villy Awards (2022)
Low point for the show
This is an episode about winning an award for best couple...
That's it.
That's all of it.*
It's so bad, and worse boring, that I logged in just to write this review.
* I lied. Clayface has a B story about wanting to talk about a script. So yeah... Nothing of note happens.
The show has always interwoven relationship and superhero/villain drama to great effect. Unfortunately in this case the superhero/villain part was pushed aside to put a greater focus on CW type relationship angst. Hopefully this isn't a sign of the way the rest of the season will go because so far I've been underwhelmed with the episodes so far.
Doctor Who: The Woman Who Fell to Earth (2018)
Liked the new Doctor, but pacing and tone of episode were off
I never like regeneration episodes, but fortunately this episode doesn't dwell too much with the Doctor not acting like the Doctor. She is a bit absent minded, but all the normal cunning and wit are there.
The episode on the other hand never kicks it out of low gear. The stakes are low key and the pace slow. Wait, that's not exactly right. The pacing could use a shot of adrenaline but it is more that the tone is off. It is quiet and visibly dark. Even when something interesting happens, it is only a brief spark in the show's lackluster ground state.
Finally, I liked the new Doctor, its the companions that I have a problem with. None of them stood out which is made even worse since there are now more of them. Hopefully this is due to not having enough time to get to know them yet.
