Turn Up Charlie (2019)
Love it.
I don't think that I've ever seen a series set in this type of environment before (the electronic music scene/industry), which was first and foremost, very refreshing. Add the great characters and comedy and well, im all in and would love it if this got picked up for a second season. I'm not used to seeing Idris Alba in a comedic role but he was absolutely fantastic, as was the little girl who played Gabriella.
If you're looking for a fresh, light-hearted series to binge look no further.
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Nope. Couldnt make it past episode 4...
I started rolling my eyes so much that I thought my eyes ere going to roll right out of my head. And this is coming from someone who generally loves supernatural series and all things camp.
This series is bad. Really bad. Yes, it LOOKS interesting/mysterious/beautiful but once I made it past the pilot, I realized that this is more of a soap opera than a supernatural series. Barely any action. Two dimensional characters. Little world building...
By the 4th episode, it became painfully obvious that as an audience, we are supposed to care more about a cliche and taboo relationship between a witch and a vamp over anything else and well... I had to throw in the towel. I wanted to know about the book, or... Anything else. But nope. Their love story is the only thing that is developed and much too quickly for that matter. Unfortunately neither character is interesting enough to make me care about them.
Hinamatsuri (2018)
I laughed, I cried!
This is now one of my favorite slice of life animes. I was impressed by the humor as much as i was impressed by the touching moments in Hinamatsuri. If you like Fruits Basket, Saiki K or Mob Psycho 100, you will most defintely enjoy this anime. I watched all of the episodes in one sitting and was upset that there weren't more. The characters are all so easy to fall in love with!! Although, a cliff hanger without the prospect of more seasons is super mean and unfair to fans!
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
Took me 5 tries to watch this all the way through...
And holy crap, it was NOT worth it. I get what the film was trying to say but didn't like how it was said. There were some good ideas mixed in -- the critique of the art world and the mystery around the artist and his art -- but it all could have been done so much better. I normally love satire and elements of horror mixed with dark comedy, but I was incredibly disappointed, underwhelmed, and bored with this film. I thought that because the cast was great (sans the actress that played Josephina) and the trailer made it look a hell of a lot more interesting than it actually was, it would be right up my alley. Wrong. The ending of this was especially terrible. I chuckled and rolled my eyes, "while my boyfriend said, why did you even put this back on? You tried to watch it four times before this and never made it past the first 20 minutes."
Polar (2019)
Thank you sir, may I have another?
My guess is that this movie will end up being a cult classic. It was a fresh take on your typical action movie with elements of humor and heart. The characters are all pretty great --yes, even Matt Lucas's pervy, blueblood, soft handed villain Mr. Blut. I absolutely hated him which, if I'm not mistaken is supposed to be the point...
Mads Mikkelson is the perfect hero for this story, playing an aging hitman (who's still got what it takes) on the verge of retirement.
Maybe the violence is over the top... But that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The humor added a playful feel to that violence that I couldnt get enough of. This movie was right up my ally. I look forward to a sequel and in the meantime, im sure I'll watch this film again.
Baby (2018)
Netflix does it again!
This show most definitely deserves more than six episodes. The storylines are very soapy but the characters more than make up for it. I highly recommend watching this with the original italian audio, with english subtitles, as the English dubbing is a little off-putting.
Netflix is killing it.
