The Great Gatsby (2013)
A Complete Failure !!!
What can I say about a version of Gatsby that has rap music? There is literally nothing to recommend the latest version of Fitzgerald's novel. With the exception of Toby McGuire, who does a passable Nick Carraway, the acting is uniformly poor. The 1974 version is far superior. Perfectly cast, beautifully directed by Jack Clayton, and with great period music, that version beautifully captures the tragedy of Gatsby. The closing scenes with Gatsby's father are especially moving and heart wrenching. As with so many of today's movies, the digital tricks and the over-the-top production values overwhelm the film. The new version of Gatsby is a shallow mess that is an insult to the book !!
Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970)
A Great Film!!
"Mad Housewife" is a great satire on the state of male female relationships in the late 60's.
Carrie Snodgrass plays a educated yuppie who enters into an affair with novelist Frank Langella as an escape from her infantile husband, played by Dick Benjamin.
Snodgrass trades her dud for a stud but never gets the love and respect she really craves.
Suffice to say she is just as unhappy by the end of the film as she was at its beginning.
See it if you can but it is hard to find.
