Inheritance (2017)
Really challenging the viewer
4 stars for the production quality, good editing, good soundtrack and very decent acting. Amazing location.
Kudos to lead actor Chase Joliet, for his portrayal of a man on the verge ...
But, what was the story about? No one knows.
Here goes ...
He gets a house from his long lost now-dead dad.
Goes to live there for a few days.
Bunch of confusing flashbacks with no context, sexy time with gf, has strange dreams, finds relic in garden, kills grocery store guy with relic, by accident. Buries store guy in the garden, sells the house, drives away into the sunset with pregnant gf to start their new life.
The synopsis said "discover family secrets". What secrets? Was this a haunting? Or a possession? Or cold case? Or psychosis?
Skinamarink (2022)
A film about ceilings. If you love ceilings
My expectation exceeded reality. I was really looking forward to this. That I almost decided I liked it before watching it. Hence, the crushing disappointment.
Respect the efforts of any filmmaker producing a piece of art but this slow burn was Way. Too. Slow.
Not a lot happens. Just staring at the ceiling and intermittent whispering. If you're hard of hearing, you'll need to watch this with subtitles on.
Kids (especially little kids) scream their lungs out if there's a shadow outside the window.
They don't calmly wake their sibling, grab pillows and quietly watch cartoons as windows disappear, toys float midair ... AND they can't find their parents. (Remember when you lost your mom in the supermarket? And you cried till you couldn't breathe?)
Back to the film, you're staring at the ceiling and you can't really see or hear what's going on - found footage style. Great to create fear of the unknown.
But after an hour of dark ceilings, I may have dozed off. Woke up and there was one child less. After more ceilings, he too disappeared. End credits.
I agree with prev review, this would have made a great short story.
Nope (2022)
Not a horror film, it's a commentary.
7 stars cos it's Jordan Peele. But if you're looking for horror, this isn't it.
Peele is famously known as a horror fan, so he commentates on tropes rather than uses them.
Lots of Easter eggs and homages. Attention to detail and big money effects.
The film is about extremism for entertainment. Getting the money shot. Going viral. The most gory, the most insane event ... but if it's not on Youtube it didn't happen.
And in true form ,as the viewer, we're waiting for the extreme spectacle. The most gory, the most insane money shot of the film.
When it doesn't come after 2 hours, the film becomes boring.
And we'd rather see more of the chimp.
We're the horror.
Zhou (2022)
Quality horror
It is not THE best horror out there but very strong overall.
Passing curses though books, spoken word, VHS is a common vehicle. Incantation does the storyline and rules well.
Great pacing as the curse is revealed piece by piece through the film. Keeps you interested till the end.
Found footage style with a solid cast. Sneaky ending!
Crimes of the Future (2022)
Crime against horror
I like Cronenberg. Remember The Fly? Iconic. But this was a miss. Woof. Sorry bro. It was ambitious. Slow moving.
Expected Scifi horror with Hollywood level spice yet received a painfully slow moving operetta about how micro-plastics are in everything.
The Black Phone (2021)
Hot Garbage
Tried to make it look like Stranger Things ... turned into a pile of hot garbage. Aesthetics is ok with the mask.
If you enjoy glaring plot holes, weak characters and shallow backstories then this is the movie for you.
