The Witcher (2019)
Highly Inaccurate Information
Whoever wrote the credits must not have watched the series. They said that Marilka is in one episode; I'm watching Episode 2, and she's in it.
Regardless, this is an excellent fantasy tale. Between The Lord of The Rings, Game of Thrones, and The Witcher, can the 21st century be the century of the fantasy film?
Shark Night 3D (2011)
Every Shark Movie Cliché is Here
This movie would have been scarier if too much time hadn't been wasted by trying to include every shark movie cliché ever filmed. From the Token African-American ( why do the Black men always die first?) to the many saltwater shark species thriving in a freshwater lake, this movie is short on credibility and long on imagination. My only positive note on this movie? I didn't waste my money to watch it in a theater.
Susanne Bartsch: On Top (2017)
Definitely Pretentious. Which is Why it Works.
This is an accurate reflection of its era: overblown, decadent, and pretentious. It was a freewheeling time--unlike our present time--when having fun was the goal, and nobody took themselves too seriously.
The movie was fun to watch, and brought back many memories.
Assimilate (2019)
Another Remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"
The original "Invasion" was made during the 1950s Red Scare. It was an allegory of how the Communists were taking over the United States.
The first remake completely ignored that view, instead replacing it with unnamed aliens from space. Better than the original, but still predictable.
This time around, the film was well-produced, but it's still a remake. The problem with being 70 years old, as I am, is having the originals to compare with the remakes.
If you've not seen the originals, I think you'll enjoy this newest version entertaining, especially since It doesn't give us any idea of who or what was behind this latest invasion.
Godzilla (1998)
Same old plot, better effects
I know I've seen worse creature features. I just can't remember where or when. Like George Lucas forgot with Star Wars, it takes more than special effects to make a movie interesting. Poor acting and a less-than-credible plot can't make up for fireworks and explosions which, when all is said and done, is really all this clunker of a movie is.
District 9 (2009)
A Definite Nail-biter!
Sci-fi/Fantasy is my favorite genre, and this movie is a perfect example of why. It's taut, credible, and in the end, had me almost hating the human race.
Yes, it's bloody--gory at times--but not merely for thrills. Ironically, it's a South African production; ironically because of that country's history of apartheid.
Settle down with a big bowl of popcorn, lock your doors and windows, and enjoy!
