Shutter Island (2010)
Gripping, suspenseful and well worth watching
Gripping, suspenseful and well worth watching This is one of the best films I have seen in ages. I was gripped throughout the entire film. It is so well acted; Leonardo DiCaprio's acting abilities are underrated and amazing.
Some people have commented that it was obvious what was going on in the film. Even though I did guess the plot early on in the film, you can never be sure. Therefore it keeps you on the edge of your seat and deeply intrigued. The storyline is consistent and the ending makes perfect sense.
The film is intense but not boring unless you have poor concentration levels and need more shock value than a gripping storyline. It is not full of special effects to capture the audience as it doesn't need to be with the mastery of its direction.
The Scouting Book for Boys (2009)
Promised so much but delivered so little
Unbelievable storyline, unbelievable characterisation and poor acting (apart from the young lad who played David). There really isn't much else that can be said about this film apart from the fact that it could be deemed as good if viewers do not question any of the many discrepancies and unrealistic situations the storyline provides.
I also found it insulting to caravan folk. There wasn't one likable character amongst the people in this film, who choose to live an alternative lifestyle. Every character was flawed in some way. A negative and insulting misrepresentation of people who live on caravan parks.
Avatar (2009)
Overly hyped and ridiculously expensive movie
Sometimes I think people really do just believe and go along with the hype of whatever they are being sold. The truth is that this movie is boring, long, totally unoriginal and easily forgettable (thank goodness). The visual 3D effects were quite spectacular but only for about 10 minutes. After that, they became repetitive and therefore lost any appeal. The voices were irritating, the message tiresome and the plot silly. The story is an poor imitation of FernGully The last Rainforest and Pocahontas. There is nothing original in the story and it it just drags on and on and on. There is nothing more to add about this film other than I really did not like it.
The Dark (2005)
Boring, horrible, pretentious rubbish.
This film is a nasty, sinister tale. It will make you jump (a lot!) but this soon gets tedious after countless shock tactics. I came out of this film feeling perturbed and horrified - and not just at the acting, which is particularly bad - the context is horribly disturbing, a grieving mother longing for the return of her dead daughter. What follows is a mishmash of goodness knows what, the plot is ridiculous as it ricochets back and forth between the here and now and a grizzly afterlife. Two girls fighting it out to get back to the land of the living. In the end unless you care enough to find out and think about it - which I didn't after being put through such drivel for an hour and a half - you won't know who's who. and probably won't care. This film tries to be clever and suspenseful but it's nothing more than unpleasant claptrap, the only thing it gains points for is the beautiful location in which it was shot.
