Masters of the Air (2024)
So disrespectful to the British
Lasted one and a half episodes, couldn't take the brave Americans and cowardly British routine, you can tell all involved are American. From the corny one liners, the tooth pick in the mouth, the bleached hair and James Dean looks of Austin Butler, this clearly wasn't made to attract anyone over the age of 20. I read a comment on Instagram saying 'Austin showed them how brave these men were fighting for America' - sigh.
The cliched scenes we've seen hundreds of times before but better. How dare they disregard our own brave men and women who fought and died for this country, working class people also flew dangerous missions and put their neck on the line day in and day out. Apple TV and all involved should pick up a book!
Ricky Gervais: Armageddon (2023)
Fan of Ricky, but this just wasn't funny
I actually found this depressing. His nasty rants aimed at disabled children, his patronising tone throughout trying to explain to us all why a joke is a joke. Even the Peter Dinklage joke "he wasn't happy" yes Ricky we got it you didn't need to continue to explain the joke. He tried to push the boundaries and offend but he ended up just sounding like the school bully. He comes across as an angry little man hating on everyone but with no real reason. I hope he turns this around and writes new material as when I think of his previous shows I realise how he has now continued on the "let's offend" theme without any real thought behind it anymore, it's just being nasty for the sake of it. The 3 stars are because I know he is better than this not for this actual performance.
Maestro (2023)
Started slow got better ...
Started very slow to the point I almost turned it off but persist if you feel the same. The Mahler orchestral scene is incredible. Bradley Cooper whilst some comment on his overacting I think played it with passion, Carey Mulligan is always wonderful and she excels in this.
Would have liked more West Side Story, more music less about his bisexuality- we know, we don't care, it's the man and the music we were here for - or maybe you weren't but to me personally I would have liked a bit more of the talent behind the music. But still glad I persevered.
Am sure this will win many awards, I see the IMDb score constantly rising since its release today, so expect it to do well all round.
Wilderness (2023)
Just dumb, with the usual cliches
Firstly Jenna Coleman kept forgetting she was supposed to be Welsh ! I would love to see Oliver Jackson Cohen play a good guy, and what is with the anti British comments throughout "people aside there are worst places" "nice people if you can forget their britishness" . The ballsey police detective, the lesbian lover, the cynical boss, the dizzy blondes. I didn't read the book but I suspect it was one of those that Reece Witherspoon probably prompted in her book club. This is boring, unimaginative and a waste of good acting talent. I have to say I lasted all 6 episodes but spent 90% of the time doing other tasks as well and don't believe I missed a thing.
The Strays (2023)
What on earth was this film trying to be - Jordan Peele bad bad copy
This was just awful. Boring, the usual "whites are all toffs" - though according to this uncultured as well, the acting is dreadful esp the main lead and the original daughter. It didn't do anything - no clever message, no clever twist - just stupid.
The writing and direction made it so amateur why on Earth are we paying this money for Netflix they clearly just churn out dumb rubbish on a weekly basis now and think nobody will notice whilst they continue to give us a poorer service.
Avoid avoid avoid I was actually angry at how bad this was especially as it's clearly had scenes stolen from other movies.
Harry & Meghan: The Complete Story (2022)
I tried I really did ...
Couldn't even finish episode one - what cringing, self indulgent, staged, nonsense. They wanted to be out of the public eye and left alone yet here we are... videos taken over years; the first video at the shows Meghan with a towel on her head (this is warts and all look I couldn't be bothered drying my hair for Netflix I'm too pure, natural and sad) from then on I think my eye rolling was every 30 seconds. It was just so dull and they seem pretty obsessed with the very family they apparently wanted to distance themselves from - quite frankly the mind boggles as to who these people and their blind fans are.
Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022)
Nothing much happens unless it all happened in last 30 minutes
By which point I had given up! Don't get me wrong I like a slow burner but my goodness...something happen, anything - random texts from beyond the grave, nobody believes the main protagonist strange things are afoot - they all live in Stephen King town - the bully, the love interest, the posh kids etc etc. Can't fault the cast, just the fact for a horror nothing remotely scary happens though I did give up with 30 mins to spare so who knows I could be wrong, perhaps it does a Carrie and has a crash, bang, wallop ending which was worth the wait but somehow I don't think this was going to be the case.
Clark (2022)
Fun show deducted a point for the unreadable subtitles
Why are the subtitles in white when the show starts in black and white did nobody test this - if a white background the subtitles become invisible !
Anyway that aside it's a great drama and Bill Skarsgard is always worth a watch. Not laugh out loud funny but thoroughly entertaining - definitely worth a watch, even better if you can speak Swedish and don't have to rely on subtitles.
Spencer (2021)
At a loss as to what I just watched !
Awful acting, fabricated story, dreadful soundtrack and boring - avoid at all costs it's just plain dumb.
Diana was treated dreadfully wrong know that ! We are told constantly but she was no Saint either, though can't tell which side the Director is on as she comes across quite mad in this.
Chloe (2022)
Why do BBC make everything about 3 episodes too long
Started off well, then started getting too far fetched (turning up at Chloe's doctors apts??) and then it just dragged. The premise was great but we didn't need 6 hour long episodes to get there.
Nobody (2021)
Would have been ok if a comedy
Corney contrived and embarrassing to watch the lead snear throughout beating up guys half his age on the bus (nice of them to wait their turn to be hit) whilst trying to be so cool. Didn't work I was waiting for some satire but no bless him he took himself seriously. Switched it off after best part of an hour and that was generous - avoid its not even good trash.
Don't Look Up (2021)
It's not a laugh out loud comedy - it's not supposed to be!
This was pure satire and frightening true to life with the social media obsessed generation who would rather spend all day hearing about the latest pop star scandal than the possibility the world is about to end. Clever, fast moving, crazy at times but the message is clear - if the world were about to end the majority would probably get their finest designer gear on to video themselves waiting !
Being the Ricardos (2021)
So boring yet should have been great considering subject
A story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez should have been amazing, exciting and eye opening - yet I tried on 3 separate occasions to watch and every time I found it amateur and bland. Someone said a biopic should be done about this great couple and I agree whole heartedly with them when they said this wasn't it. Boring boring boring.
The Pact (2021)
I kept waiting for it to become good
The twists weren't clever, the entire storyline improbable and the acting was dreadful! The worst part is the actors are usually good, but Laura Fraser shows emotion by not blinking, Jason Hughes shouts suddenly and then goes back to looking hungover. No suspense and it didn't need to be 6 episodes - 1 was enough.
Soulmates (2020)
Loved this ... better than Black Mirror has been in ages
I really enjoyed these episodes - clever, twisted and well acted. Won't be everyone's taste just like Black Mirror isn't everyone's taste. True it's an odd concept the whole "soulmates" set up at times feels almost unnecessary - just two people who shouldn't be together getting together and then drama ensues. Definitely worth a go, esp for the excellent cast.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Apparently this is an adaptation of Turn of the Screw !?
It most definitely isn't. I lasted the long plodding 9 episodes I am surprised I last this long and before people say that I'd be better of watching some action movie this is actually my sort of thing except where to begin with how it went wrong.
Henry Thomas accent - one of the worst "English" accents I've heard in a long time and his acting is embarrassing. The narrator can't decide if she is Southern or Northern English, the children are too annoying to take pity on. And the plot drags on and on.
This could have been so good but it was an absolute shambles. If it's horror you want it's not this, if it's a dark brooding drama you want ... it's not this either
The Morning Show (2019)
A very shouty drama but good none the less
I'll start with the negative to get it out of the way, there are other emotions when upset (Jennifer and Steve in particular ) other than over the top shouting - they SHOUTED ALOT whether upset, frustrated or surprised. I also still don't rate Jennifer Anniston as a great actress but Steve Carrel played over the top creepy well. I was hooked however and found it stylish and entertaining with good sub plots. Probably one of the most entertaining pieces of drama on 2019.
Dracula (2020)
I great (alternative) adaptation - first class
I understand why some people disliked this, it starts as a typical gothic horror and half way through the 3rd episode it's difficult to believe it's the same drama but I loved it for that! The 2nd episode perhaps was too overlong, I know they wanted to go into more detail as to what happened on the Demeter but at 90 mins it was maybe too much detail. A lot of reviews disliked the 3rd episode I thought it was extremely clever, funny and sad. The cast particularly Claes and Dolly were fantastic and I was sad there were only 3 episodes.
If die-hard traditionalists watch this though they may be disappointed but for me it brought Dracula up to date wonderfully - I mean he can Skype !
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Believe the public not the critics
This film was incredible I have never seen a movie as often as I have this one, too embarrassed to say how many times, (more than twice less than seven, just) Rami was first class and deserves all the plaudits he is getting right now ! Sad, funny and that Live aid session - just brilliant
Dirty John (2018)
Started well enough ...
Started off really well, good actors - I mean ok the sisters were annoying as hell, not sure if that was intentional, but then it dragged and although a true story sadly after all episodes it all felt a bit amateur
