1408 (2007)
not what I'd hoped for
To my surprise after seeing a test screening of 1408 I was extremely disappointed. I'm a long time Stephen King fan. I usually like his work when transferred from page to screen, but for me 1408 was all wrong. The plot seemed forced almost contrived to the point of being silly, and instead of being scared I was just hoping for it to get better as time went on. Sometimes even if it is a bad movie the cast can save it, but frankly for me the choices were all wrong. John Cusack will always be a comedy front man in my eyes he seemed really out of place in this movie. After doing a movie like Snakes on a Plane, I really can't take Samuel L. Jackson seriously, maybe that's just a personal thing. I really wanted to like this movie especially after such a promising trailer, but to be honest it just didn't do anything for me. I left the screening thinking 'I Hope King hasn't lost his touch" 1408 was not the thriller it wanted to be it was just another bad attempt to add into what seems like this years constant flow of disappointing horror movies. This is just my personal opinion maybe others will like this movie better than I did.
Trainspotting (1996)
eeew
Probably the most disgusting thing I can image doing is swimming through a dirty toilet, in search of a pill I had just put up my own anus. Good thing Trainspotting took care of showing me that on the silver screen. Despite how disgusting that scene is, the film is a master piece. The costumes are great each character sort of has a style that embodies their personality. Ewan McGregor looks great in his tight skinny jeans with his shaved head. I love the character of spud he is so funny. Everything he does in this movie makes me laugh, and his accent is intense. I can't understand him, but I like him. I got kind of mad when they shot the dog in the ass because I'm an animal lover, but the dialogue they had during that scene was great. The music in this film was great, so great in fact that there are two jamming sound tracks! I have theme on cassette tape because I am just that cool and old school. If you haven't seen this masterpiece do yourself a favor pop some corn sit back and enjoy these crazy Scottish clowns get themselves into a lot of trouble!
Stick It (2006)
fairly good
I liked this movie. It was a cute cheesy teen movie with a good message and an enjoyable premise. I've always liked gymnastics, they are the best part of the summer Olympics! I thought the acting was actually pretty decent for a b movie. I liked the beginning part. I wish they would have had more of the bmx bikes and skate boards I thought that was pretty cool.I would have liked to have seen a little more gymnastics. I mean what they had was good but I think even more would have been better. I liked the two male friend characters I think they were funny and they really added to the story. I think this show kids (girls) at a sleepover, I have a little sister! I would recommend it it is light hearted and enjoyable.
300 (2006)
what 's all the fuss about?
I guess I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I mean yes this was visually tantalizing, but for me that only goes so far. The story was severely lacking, so was the character development. I didn't really care about any of the characters even though some of the speeches were written well the story was pretty weak. I didn't like the basically pornographic sex scene randomly interjected. I thought it was random and completely unnecessary. I'm glad the queen was a strong character. It was good to see that the female opinion was respected by the people who really mattered. I also thought the dirty old diseased men and the young oracle girls was a little much. I guess if you are into graphic novel and the stylistic look of the film it's good but, as a whole it's not really a great movie. I'd give it a C.
Marie Antoinette (2006)
lacking in plot
This movie was not as good as I was hopping. I wanted some character development and a racy plot, but what I got was a lavish tour or Versailles with a whisper of a story. I thought the acting seemed extremely casual, and there was hardly a plot at all. I would have liked to see more intimate conversations. I did enjoy the costumes and the scenery. It was kind of worth watching just for that. I thought all the dogs were really cute, and the cakes and candies look awesome. It made me hungry. I don't think it gave a very good historical portrayal, and it was very strange how everything seemed to be formal yet casual at the same time. The whole idea of the film was a bit muddled. I think it needed a much better story if it was meant to keep my attention for longer than half an hour.
The Abandoned (2006)
I liked the Music...
I really liked the use of music in this movie, or should I say un-use. It was nice for once that every creepy moment wasn't foreshadowed by a few bars of a song, I mean there are some classic films which that works for, but sometimes it nice to have a change. I liked how this one had either really soft music or just silence to heighten the creepiness. Another good thing was the house; it was very scary. I like how it was sort of alive, and in control. I think a lot of old houses have personality and are really creepy. A lot of the cuts were clever to. I liked when it went from the picture on the t.v. two the farm. I sort of wish there would have been a little more interaction with some towns people or something, but the film still worked for me. I liked the river surrounding the house in a circle that was a good metaphor, and the scene where everything returned to the way it was 40 years ago was cool to. I think this movie had a lot going for it. The cinematography was great, the acting was good, the scenery was perfect. My only criticism would be that the story was a little hard to follow, but I definitely think it was worth seeing and I kind of want to watch it again. It seems like it's one of those movie you need to watch more than once to fully appreciate.
