1. Watchmen (2009)

R | 162 min | Action, Drama, Mystery

56 Metascore

In a version of 1985 where superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach on the trail of a conspiracy that will change the course of history.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, Malin Akerman

Votes: 582,677 | Gross: $107.51M

Perhaps the greatest comic book based movie ever made. The story is pretty faithful to the original. Every character is realistic, they are human beings with their problems, greaves and ghosts from their past though they are "super" heroes. Actors do great job and they make Rorschach, Comedian, Dr. Manhattan and others really live. The film has many memorable moments: incredible fight scenes as well as deep touching emotional moments. I have to mention the intro which is maybe best ever. The film is also technically great: the special effects are incredible.

2. Sin City (2005)

R | 124 min | Crime, Thriller

74 Metascore

An exploration of the dark and miserable Basin City and three of its residents, all of whom are caught up in violent corruption.

Directors: Frank Miller, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez | Stars: Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba

Votes: 793,910 | Gross: $74.10M

Another film based on a comic book. Sin City tells three different stories and they all have something to do with each other. Every story is great and Sin City is like three movies condensed into one. Director has really successed in this, and Sin City is an incredible whole. It is also visually maybe the best film of the decade: I really liked the noir style. And when the film is full of great actors, it cannot fail.

3. Inglourious Basterds (2009)

R | 153 min | Adventure, Drama, War

69 Metascore

In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eli Roth, Mélanie Laurent

Votes: 1,584,839 | Gross: $120.54M

My favorite war-time movie. The power of Inglourious Basterds is strong characters and actors who really throw themselves into the movie. You can really hate Hans Landa and look forward to his death. Basterds are a bunch of insolent and violent men, but you love them for sure. The war-time atmosphere is well reached in the movie and incredible set design and costumes support this. Very impressive film.

4. The Dark Knight (2008)

PG-13 | 152 min | Action, Crime, Drama

84 Metascore

When the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine

Votes: 2,871,741 | Gross: $534.86M

I can't help loving these comic book based films. There have been just so many great adaptations these last years. This movie is one of the darkest and most serious comic book based adaptations beside Watchmen and Sin City. I have to raise one character above others: Joker, of course. Heath Ledger (RIP) does an amazing role, which is also his last. Other actors do great work, too. There is real sparkling between the characters. The storyline is intense and the film also looks visually great.

5. Gran Torino (2008)

R | 116 min | Drama

73 Metascore

After a Hmong teenager tries to steal his prized 1972 Gran Torino, a disgruntled, prejudiced Korean War veteran seeks to redeem both the boy and himself.

Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: Clint Eastwood, Bee Vang, Christopher Carley, Ahney Her

Votes: 815,145 | Gross: $148.10M

Eastwood's epic goodbyes as an actor. The movie follows Walt Kowalski's development from a racist bastard to a hero of a Hmong neighbourhood. Eastwood makes one of his strongest roles in Gran Torino. A development story of an old man is touching and stays in mind for a long time. Eastwood shows that he's also a great director.

6. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)

R | 88 min | Adventure, Comedy

64 Metascore

A Korean-American office worker and his Indian-American stoner friend embark on a quest to satisfy their desire for White Castle burgers.

Director: Danny Leiner | Stars: John Cho, Kal Penn, Ethan Embry, Rob Tinkler

Votes: 206,163 | Gross: $18.23M

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle is the best trash comedy ever. I don't say "teen comedy", because Harold & Kumar is much cleverer than average teen comedies. There are tits, weed and excrement humor for sure, but the movie is not based only on those kind of things. Harold and Kumar is one of the funniest and craziest duo ever and there are side characters that make you laugh your ass off. There is many insane moments you will remember for long. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle represents the nobility of comedy.

7. Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

R | 111 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

69 Metascore

After awakening from a four-year coma, a former assassin wreaks vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Daryl Hannah, Michael Madsen

Votes: 1,194,431 | Gross: $70.10M

Tarantino's violence opera is filled with adrenaline and has the best fight scenes of 00's. Uma Thurman is incredible as the revengeful Bride. The plot is pretty common revenge story, but impressive characters and Tarantino's different direction raise it far above the average. The violence is ridiculously bloody, and it fits for the film like a katana on Bill's throat.

8. V for Vendetta (2005)

R | 132 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

In a future British dystopian society, a shadowy freedom fighter, known only by the alias of "V", plots to overthrow the tyrannical government - with the help of a young woman.

Director: James McTeigue | Stars: Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman, Rupert Graves, Stephen Rea

Votes: 1,179,584 | Gross: $70.51M

Well, a comic book adaptation. V is one of the most interesting and toughest characters of recent years. He's mystic, he's intelligent, he can fight... he is the power of this film. Natalie Portman does also one of her best works standing beside V. V for Vendetta is definitely one of my favorite futuristic movies. The society has crumbled and V has dedicated his life to do a revolution. And what a revolution this is. Effects are also stunning and the film is visually perfect.

9. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

PG-13 | 201 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

94 Metascore

Gandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom

Votes: 1,979,849 | Gross: $377.85M

An epic fantasy movie with incredible special effects and set design. All the actors are amazing and there is no character that isn't more or less interesting. Above all, this movie is a visual masterpiece. Soundtrack is also masterful. The Return of The King ends the trilogy royally.

10. Eastern Promises (2007)

R | 100 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

83 Metascore

A teenager who dies during childbirth leaves clues in her journal that could tie her child to a rape involving a violent Russian mob family.

Director: David Cronenberg | Stars: Naomi Watts, Viggo Mortensen, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Josef Altin

Votes: 261,199 | Gross: $17.11M

The best crime drama of the decade. The characters and their relations have been pictured strong. Eastern Promises is a tough and crude movie and represents the world of mafia as ruthless as it is. Cronenberg's newest masterpiece is also as beautiful as tough.
