It's difficult to know how to assess this film. it's about a young girl, Makoto, who literally gets the ability to 'Leap Through Time'. It appears that her Aunt once had the ability at some stage (or a former lover), but she doesn't go into any more detail. Anyhow, Makoto has fun with doing things that work out well in her favour. However, she becomes unstuck at the point when one of her boy friends asks her on a 'date'. At this point she goes back in time to stop this moment from happening and gradually the boy falls for another classmate. Makoto soon realises not only that she loves him but also that her time changing actions have had some negative effects upon other people. It's fair to say that there are some dramatic and well orchestrated moments that tug at the heart strings. The time travel is never taken seriously and when the twist arrives, that X is from the future and had come back to see the appearance of a certain painting, it's clear that time travel is not the focus of the film. It's more about the parody of time and how, without time travel and hindsight, our pathway through life isn't easy or clear. Overall I think it champions the idea of taking chances, being brave and understanding that all actions have a consequence.

This pulls together 3 interlinked short stories with the main link being a young boy. The first part shows the boy in communication with an ex school girl friend who now live a long distance apart. This is technically the best animated film I have ever seen. Otomo says in the booklet, accompanying the 2 disc special edition, that when he watched the film back several years later he noticed a 'heat' coming from every frame/scene in the film - and he's not wrong! From the get-go you can tell an awful lot of attention has gone into Akira's production. It was at the time the most expensive animated film ever ($10+ million).
I held off from watching this film for many years purely because, and this may sound ridiculous, the characters looked ugly and the general air coming off the trailers was one of carnage, gore and sensationalism. I would say the trailers don't demonstrate the beauty of this film or the depth of it.
Akira is now one of my favourite anime films ever. It's characters are a lot harder and the setting very repressive but it makes the film feel instantly more emotive and understandable at a deeper level. There are not many light touches or moments of humour, which on reflection there might/should have been. The characters are also not fully rounded. Tetsuo is unlikeable but you do 'get him'. Kaneda is the hero, if you can say that, but he's always been on a level and likeable from the films start. The characters aren't fleshed out as such but, as I eluded to earlier, their is something deeper about them that's hard to explain.
It's a film which essentially says we all have incredible power and we are all sensitive souls. We need to leave a legacy of hope and respect to future generations otherwise we breed monsters and, ultimately, lead us to the end of the world.
Overall it is the lack of humour and character exposition that makes this film a little flat and not immediately re-watchable. But it's the sheer quality of the production - the cinematic look - that will leave you astounded.
