Director: Paul Gross | Stars: Paul Gross, Michael Greyeyes, James Kot, Jesse Frechette

Votes: 8,803

The battle sequences are terrific as is the historical recreation of the era. Unfortunately, the love story is quite schmaltzy, which diminishes the story somewhat. Still Paul Gross manages to pull it off.

2. The Great Dictator (1940)

Dictator Adenoid Hynkel tries to expand his empire while a poor Jewish barber tries to avoid persecution from Hynkel's regime.

Director: Charles Chaplin | Stars: Charles Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Jack Oakie, Reginald Gardiner

Votes: 237,382 | Gross: $0.29M

The WWI scenes at the beginning of the film are very funny but what else would you expect from Charlie Chaplin. The funniest moment is when the Big Bertha cannon misfires. A masterpiece.

Votes: 212,290

A harrowing film about the stupidity of war and how the ones who run armies have no clue as to what is really going on. A sad film with a terrific performance by Kirk Douglas.

65 Metascore

Director: Peter Weir | Stars: Mel Gibson, Mark Lee, Bill Kerr, Harold Hopkins

Votes: 41,974 | Gross: $5.73M

One of the greatest war films ever made with beautiful cinematography and well fleshed out characters. The battle only takes place in the last 30 minutes of the film which gives us plenty of time to get the know the protagonists. A great film all around.

5. The African Queen (1951)

Not bad with some very good aerial sequences.

Amazing film.

Director: Peter R. Hunt | Stars: Lee Marvin, Roger Moore, Barbara Parkins, Ian Holm

Votes: 3,356

The first half is very funny and light, the second half dark and intense. The denouement is very exciting with a great deal of tension. Roger Moore is ok in this as is Lee Marvin but they are eclipsed by the spectacular scenery and intense last third of the film.

9. A Bear Named Winnie (2004 TV Movie)

PG | 90 min | Drama, War

The extraordinary veritable story of the black bear who would become the inspiration for the stories of A.A. Milne, and the heroic man who saved her life.

Great Hitchcock film that mixes together several of the Ashenden stories by Somerset Maugham. Very exciting.

A film about the Paris Peace Conference that negotiated the end of World War I with the Versailles Treaty.

Director: Paul Cowan | Stars: R.H. Thomson, David Lowe, Paul Bandey, Yan Brian

Votes: 176

Very good documentary that incudes a great deal of fiction sequences with actors recreating the Paris peace talks of 1919. Very well made.

13. Von Richthofen and Brown (1971)

PG-13 | 97 min | Action, Biography, Drama

The story of Manfred von Richthofen, the German air ace during World War I and his struggle with the enemy aces and some jealous German officers.

Director: Roger Corman | Stars: John Phillip Law, Don Stroud, Barry Primus, Corin Redgrave

Votes: 1,384 | Gross: $0.17M

Great aerial sequences compensate for a lacklustre, clichéd script. The acting is ok but nothing special. Thankfully there are a lot of flying sequences. Ok but could have been a lot better.

14. Black and White in Color (1976)

PG | 90 min | Comedy, Drama, War

During World War I, French colonists lost in African desert decide to attack their German neighbors.

Director: Jean-Jacques Annaud | Stars: Jean Carmet, Jacques Dufilho, Catherine Rouvel, Jacques Spiesser

Votes: 1,787

Hilarious farce that shows the stupidity of misplaced patriotism. One of the funniest films I have ever seen. The best sequence has the French shopkeepers setting up a picnic to watch the upcoming battle. A must see.

Stupid action film that has cowboys become fighter pilots. Really, really bad.

Great mini-series based on the Somerset Maugham stories. Ian Bannen is great as R. Very well done overall,

Charlie is a boot camp private who has a dream of being a hero who goes on a daring mission behind enemy lines.

Charlie Chaplin in the trenches. Great film released just after the end of the war.

22. The Lost Patrol (1934)

Passed | 73 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

A dozen British soldiers, lost in a Mesopotamian desert during World War I, are menaced by unseen Arab enemies.

Director: John Ford | Stars: Victor McLaglen, Boris Karloff, Wallace Ford, Reginald Denny

Votes: 3,603

Great war film with a tense script and good performances overall. Victor McLaglen and Reginald Denny are quite good but Boris Karloff overacts to the point of ridicule. Shot in Arizona and in the dunes of California, we get a real sense of the heat and uncomfortable conditions the soldiers are living. The tension comes from the fact that the enemy, that is picking them off one by one, remains unseen until the very end of the movie. Well worth seeing if you can get past Karloff's stilted overacting.

23. A Farewell to Arms (1932)

Unrated | 80 min | Drama, Romance, War

An American ambulance driver and an English nurse fall in love in Italy during World War I.

Director: Frank Borzage | Stars: Gary Cooper, Helen Hayes, Adolphe Menjou, Mary Philips

Votes: 6,813

Dry, starchy and overacted. This film did not age well. The acting is silly for the most part and the schmaltz in turned on big time. Avoid this.

24. 1917 (2019)

R | 119 min | Action, Drama, History

78 Metascore

April 6th, 1917. As an infantry battalion assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay, Daniel Mays, Colin Firth

Votes: 675,884 | Gross: $159.23M

Spectacular cinematography and a very good story with solid acting. Some of the situations strain credibility but overall, a magnificent film.

25. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)

Passed | 152 min | Drama, War

91 Metascore

A German youth eagerly enters World War I, but his enthusiasm wanes as he gets a firsthand view of the horror.

Director: Lewis Milestone | Stars: Lew Ayres, Louis Wolheim, John Wray, Arnold Lucy

Votes: 67,694 | Gross: $3.27M

Intense, gut-wrenching war film that follows young idealistic German soldiers throughout the war. As realistic a portrayal of war as you will ever see with some powerful scenes including the one where the young soldier Paul stabs a French soldier in a foxhole and watches him die over several days. Some of the acting is a little theatrical but this is must-see film. Academy Award winner for Best film and Best Director in 1930.

26. All Quiet on the Western Front (1979 TV Movie)

TV-14 | 150 min | Drama, War

A young soldier faces profound disillusionment in the soul-destroying horror of World War I.

Director: Delbert Mann | Stars: Richard Thomas, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Ian Holm

Votes: 10,536

Well-made remake of the 1930 classic. It isn't as "epic" as the original but the overall feeling of dread and desperation is present. Richard Thomas puts in an excellent, nuanced performance and most of the rest of the cast is good. Czech locations help a lot. Definitely worth a look but try to find the complete 2 and 1/2 hour version.

27. Doughboys (1930)

Passed | 79 min | Comedy, Romance, War

A naive and wealthy young man seeks to impress a girl and then unwittingly signs up for army service.

Director: Edward Sedgwick | Stars: Buster Keaton, Sally Eilers, Cliff Edwards, Edward Brophy

Votes: 531

Surprisingly good Buster Keaton MGM talkie. The story is pretty straightforward and the silliness is kept to a minimum. Buster is having a great time in this one and he is ably aided by the dynamic Sally Eilers (her dance during the stage show is a lot of fun and sexy to boot). Very enjoyable film that is miles ahead of some of his other MGM features like Speak Easily.
