(South Korea) Personally, I loved this film, I think it's class in its genre, and full of realist grit with some comedic and quite moving touches. Great cinema.

2. Drive (I) (2011)

79 Metascore

Votes: 704,996 | Gross: $35.06M

(directed by Nicholas Refn) (cast includes Ryan Gosling, Cary Mulligan) Apparently my friend thought that Drive was monotonous and boring. I was surprised to hear that, as I thought it was suspenseful and transfixing. In particular, I really liked the emotional element of the relationship of trust between Cary Mulligan's character and Ryan Gosling, and I think the question of ethics and the way that it is dealt with here is very interesting. Also redemption. Aesthetically, also, this is very minimalist and clean, I think it's a master work when it comes to all these things combined: the performances are pitch perfect. Nicholas Refn can be hit and miss as far as I'm concerned; when he does hit the spot, it's good, and this is a better example of his craft than Bronson, as far as I'm concerned, in spite of my love for Tom Hardy.

Votes: 252,975 | Gross: $31.49M

(directed by David Cronenberg) (cast includes Viggo Mortensen, Ed arggh, what's his last name) It's been a while since I saw this, but again, I think the best crime drama confronts head-on the questions of morality and redemption and the dramatically grey area when it comes to questions of ethics. Particularly when others pose real threat to those one holds dear. But also the question of what acts of violence can a human soul can be capable of while still retaining actual goodness - where is the line? - and whether people can ever really change for the better. Rust and Bone is an interesting example of these themes.
