This had all the things I love about the classic slasher movies: Inventive fantastic kills, characters that you want to root for and some you want to see get hacked to bits, a sexy cast, and a badass maniac. This is the second movie in the series (Bikini Girls on Ice was #1) and I’m hoping they continue this into a long running series.
2. American Mary (2012)

The allure of easy money sends Mary Mason, a medical student, into the world of underground surgeries which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so-called "freakish" clients.
Directors: Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska | Stars: Katharine Isabelle, Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren
Votes: 28,334
The latest effort from the Soska Sisters starred one of my favorite scream queens of all time Katharine Isabelle. Loved the look and feel of this movie! The original plot and intriguing world of the movie sucked me in right away.
3. Evil Dead (2013)
R | 91 min | Horror
Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.
Director: Fede Alvarez | Stars: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci
Votes: 197,309 | Gross: $54.24M
I was skeptical going in to this remake but once it got started I absolutely loved it. It had the fun and zaniness of the original and plenty of splatter gore. I really appreciate that they got some serious intensity into it which has often been the downfall of movies trying to capture the feel of the original Evil Dead.
4. Frankenstein's Army (2013)
R | 84 min | Horror, Sci-Fi
In the dying days of WWII, a battalion of Russian soldiers is lured into the secret lab of a deranged scientist and forced to face off against an army of horrific flesh-and-metal war machines.
Director: Richard Raaphorst | Stars: Robert Gwilym, Hon Ping Tang, Alexander Terentyev, Luke Newberry
Votes: 9,202
This had the potential to be #1 this year but the found footage gimmick held it back. That said it was still one of my favorites of the year. I guess I’m a sucker for Nazi zombies and monsters.
5. Saturday Morning Mystery (2012)

A dark and bloody parody about a Scooby-Doo-like team of paranormal investigators and their devoted dog. With the crew nearing bankruptcy, they're hired to get to the bottom of a series of ... See full summary »
Director: Spencer Parsons | Stars: Jonny Mars, Josephine Decker, Adam Wyatt Tate, Ashley Rae Spillers

A parody of the Scooby Gang that puts the gang in a real horror movie situation. This worked so well because they didn’t ram the comedy aspects down your throat and instead let the tension build when it made sense.
6. Why Don't You Play in Hell? (2013)
Not Rated | 129 min | Action, Comedy, Horror
A renegade film crew becomes embroiled with a yakuza clan feud.
Director: Sion Sono | Stars: Jun Kunimura, Fumi Nikaidô, Shin'ichi Tsutsumi, Hiroki Hasegawa
Votes: 8,989 | Gross: $0.03M
This Japanese movie I was lucky enough to catch at a festival this fall. It is over the top from almost the very beginning and it just ups the craziness from there. Dumptrucks of blood and lots of laughs.

Votes: 10,548
Old school American horror was strong again this year! Lots of genre favorite actors and sweet effects.

Directors: Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen | Stars: James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel
Votes: 435,012 | Gross: $101.47M
This one is more comedy then horror but there is enough apocalyptic demon stuff going on I am comfortable with it on this list. Absolutely hilarious and even more so if you’re a fan of the work this group has done in the past.
9. V/H/S/2 (2013)

Votes: 43,999 | Gross: $0.02M
A very strong second effort for this franchise. Admittedly not a fan of found footage movies this anthology style movie had tonnes of great ideas and really made the most of the style. The segment with the cult would make an amazing feature.
10. Fright Night 2 (2013 Video)
R | 100 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy
"Fright Night 2" - In Romania, Charley and his friends discover that their alluring art professor is a real-life vampire, hell-bent on completing an ancient ritual with Amy's blood.
Director: Eduardo Rodriguez | Stars: Will Payne, Jaime Murray, Sean Power, Sacha Parkinson
Votes: 7,445
First off: This isn’t a Fight Night movie. I have no idea why they shoehorned this into being a sequel to that franchise as this story would be stronger on its own. That said I went into it knowing that and decided to put aside my distaste with that decision. On its own this is one of the better vampire movies in recent times. Loved the effects and the story was great at hitting on the alluring aspects of vampires without losing the monster part. It’s a shame this was called fright night because it probably could have spawn its own franchise if it was handled right.
