Films I was pleasantly surprised at watching...

How often have you come across a film you have never really heard of for whatever reason (straight to video, extremely short run, very little marketing, foreign etc), or dismissed because you thought it looked stupid, but were pleasantly surprised how good it was after watching? Here is a short list of films I have come to love which would never have been considered "mainstream" or "blockbuster". I am interested in your list and opinion. I am sure there are other films I should see. The list is in no particular order and I will add films as I remember/watch them.

1. Moon (2009)

R | 97 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

67 Metascore

Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.

Director: Duncan Jones | Stars: Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey, Dominique McElligott, Rosie Shaw

Votes: 376,833 | Gross: $5.01M

The first time I came across this was late night on a movie channel and I caught it half way through. When I finally was able to see the entire film I was shocked at how great it is and now consider it one of the greatest sci-fi films I have ever seen.

2. Holes (2003)

PG | 117 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

71 Metascore

A wrongfully convicted boy is sent to a brutal desert detention camp where he joins the job of digging holes for some mysterious reason.

Director: Andrew Davis | Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Tim Blake Nelson

Votes: 100,309 | Gross: $67.41M

I had never even heard of the book. I still do not know if it was ever in the theaters but if you have seen it, Holes is remarkably good for what it is. Acting was great across the board and the cast contains some very prominent actors. I think Disney should stick to getting lucky off of "sleeper hits" like this instead of spending a fortune on big budget blunders.

3. Carnage (2011)

R | 80 min | Comedy, Drama

61 Metascore

Two pairs of parents hold a cordial meeting after their sons are involved in a fight, though as their time together progresses, increasingly childish behavior throws the discussion into chaos.

Director: Roman Polanski | Stars: Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, John C. Reilly

Votes: 133,067 | Gross: $2.55M

This film will definitely be an acquired taste for many but I found it well acted and the premise is quite original.

4. Take Shelter (2011)

R | 120 min | Drama, Thriller

85 Metascore

Plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, a young husband and father questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm, or from himself.

Director: Jeff Nichols | Stars: Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain, Shea Whigham, Tova Stewart

Votes: 108,200 | Gross: $1.73M

I tend to come very late to the table when it comes to Indie films like this but I am starting to believe that films like this should be the ones recognized for Oscars and not the same high-profile films that keep winning. I still do not know whether Take Shelter is meant to be a psychological drama or science fiction film but I think that is the point.

5. Mud (2012)

PG-13 | 130 min | Adventure, Drama

76 Metascore

Two young boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the vigilantes that are on his trail and to reunite him with his true love.

Director: Jeff Nichols | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Sam Shepard

Votes: 188,919 | Gross: $21.59M

Not sure how I heard of this. But I figured why not give it try. I have always found Matthew McConaughey entertaining even in all the movies people hate on but honestly would never consider him a great actor. But perhaps the old adage "less is more" is apropos here. His acting is subtle and yet proves to be very powerful. Mud was written and directed by Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) and is truly a delight to watch. I hope the boy that plays Ellis will get some nominations.

6. Pitch Black (2000)

R | 109 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

49 Metascore

A transport ship crashes and leaves its crew stranded on a desert planet inhabited by bloodthirsty creatures that come out during an eclipse.

Director: David Twohy | Stars: Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, Vin Diesel, Keith David

Votes: 253,072 | Gross: $39.24M

When it came out I thought it looked ridiculous. I had a few friends try to convince me it was actually good but I did not believe them. But I was bored one day a year or two later and rented it. Talk about a surprise. Pitch Black is quite good I think. Everything you want in an action sci-fi plus a great story and decent acting. Just wish they had stopped after making this lol.

7. Dredd (2012)

R | 95 min | Action, Crime, Sci-Fi

60 Metascore

In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.

Director: Pete Travis | Stars: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Rachel Wood

Votes: 294,576 | Gross: $13.41M

Keep in mind the title of this list is pleasant surprises lol. I am not saying Dredd is an Oscar winner by any means, but I am sure I am not alone when I say I truly thought this was going to be unbearably bad...especially since the first was just abysmal. But I have to admit it did not suck. I was pleasantly surprise at how non cartoonish Urban played Dredd. Will I watch it over and over again...probably not, but I would not run from it if it was on.

8. The Grey (2011)

R | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

64 Metascore

After their plane crashes in Alaska, six oil workers are led by a skilled huntsman to survival, but a pack of merciless wolves haunts their every step.

Director: Joe Carnahan | Stars: Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, Dallas Roberts

Votes: 263,410 | Gross: $51.58M

I am sure I will get destroyed for listing this. After all the negative press it received I quickly dismissed this film. I was definitely surprised when I finally decided to watch it. The ending was a shocker at least...I figured it would be a ridiculous and predictable Hollywood ending. Sure the tone of the film is bleak and there really is no real point to it all but maybe that is the point?

9. Liberal Arts (2012)

PG-13 | 97 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

55 Metascore

When 30-something Jesse returns to his alma mater for a professor's retirement party, he falls for Zibby, a college student, and is faced with a powerful attraction that springs up between them.

Director: Josh Radnor | Stars: Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Olsen, Zac Efron, Elizabeth Reaser

Votes: 40,310 | Gross: $0.32M

One of the better dramedies I have seen in a while. Very sincere in its approach and the characters are highly complex and sympathetic.

10. Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

R | 86 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

72 Metascore

Three magazine employees head out on an assignment to interview a guy who placed a classified advertisement seeking a companion for time travel.

Director: Colin Trevorrow | Stars: Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, Jake Johnson, Karan Soni

Votes: 130,873 | Gross: $4.01M

There really is no good way to describe this film. Just watch it.

11. The First Time (I) (2012)

PG-13 | 95 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

55 Metascore

A shy senior and a down-to-earth junior fall in love over one weekend.

Director: Jonathan Kasdan | Stars: Dylan O'Brien, Britt Robertson, Victoria Justice, James Frecheville

Votes: 73,647 | Gross: $0.02M

I initially dismissed this becuase I figured it was going to be yet another cookie cutter teen romcom. But surprisingly this is a refreshing take on teen romance. Sure there are some cliched elements but overall it is a very well written and acted story about virginity, love, friendship and life

12. Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)

R | 89 min | Comedy, Horror

65 Metascore

Affable hillbillies Tucker and Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are mistaken for murderers by a group of preppy college students.

Director: Eli Craig | Stars: Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, Katrina Bowden, Jesse Moss

Votes: 193,638 | Gross: $0.22M

I had never heard of this film when it came out. Still not sure how I heard of it but I am glad I watched it. If you are a fan of horror comedies then this is perhaps one of the best.

13. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)

PG-13 | 124 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

62 Metascore

British retirees travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel. Less luxurious than advertised, the Marigold Hotel nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways.

Director: John Madden | Stars: Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson

Votes: 99,517 | Gross: $46.41M

This got very little marketing and an even shorter run in the US. Yes it belongs to the ever-growing list of "geriatric romcoms" (some journalist I read described these films this way), but I would say you should watch this film. The cast is unbelievable and it is a very compelling story about coping with age, death, and love.

14. Black Hawk Down (2001)

R | 144 min | Action, Drama, History

74 Metascore

The story of 160 elite U.S. soldiers who dropped into Mogadishu in October 1993 to capture two top lieutenants of a renegade warlord, but found themselves in a desperate battle with a large force of heavily armed Somalis.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Tom Sizemore, Eric Bana

Votes: 423,853 | Gross: $108.64M

I dismissed this, not because I thought it would be stupid, but because I have never understood movies that are directly portraying recent events (especially when there had already been documentaries of some length that had already told the story). But I must say I love this movie. If you are old enough to remember the events of the actual crisis the film helps tie the pieces together. It is not an over the top action film depicting American heroism (apparently this is becoming an increasingly maligned thing in film these days), but it accurately portrays young servicemen (yes American get over it) who are doing their duty, struggling to survive and the futility of war.

15. Cube (1997)

R | 90 min | Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi

61 Metascore

A group of strangers awaken to find themselves placed in a giant cube. Each one of them is gifted with a special skill and they must work together to escape an endless maze of deadly traps.

Director: Vincenzo Natali | Stars: Nicole de Boer, Maurice Dean Wint, David Hewlett, Andrew Miller

Votes: 247,751 | Gross: $0.50M

Not sure if this was a straight to video or made for tv film. I caught it on tv a few months ago and as science fiction goes this is surprisingly good. If you like the themes in Twilight Zone and/or Outer Limits then Cube is right up your alley. Acting is ok but the story is quite good.

16. Upside Down (I) (2012)

PG-13 | 109 min | Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

45 Metascore

Adam and Eden fell in love as teens despite the fact that they live on twinned worlds with gravities that pull in opposite directions. Ten years after a forced separation, Adam sets out on a dangerous quest to reconnect with his love.

Director: Juan Solanas | Stars: Jim Sturgess, Kirsten Dunst, Timothy Spall, Blu Mankuma

Votes: 73,950 | Gross: $0.10M

There are serious flaws when it comes to script and scientific accuracy or even plausibility but this movie is worth watching a few times for the visual effects alone. For a budget no where near the likes of a Cameron or Jackson film, Upside Down is one of the most visually stunning films I have seen in a long time.
