1. The Descendants (2011)

R | 115 min | Comedy, Drama

84 Metascore

A land baron tries to reconnect with his two daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident.

Director: Alexander Payne | Stars: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Nick Krause

Votes: 251,776 | Gross: $82.58M

Heartfelt, touching, and very funny, The Descendents is the most enjoyable dramedy I have ever seen! The Hawaiian setting and scenery is welcome and perfect, the characters well-developed and relatable, and the plot moves a long a semi-predictable plotline with brisk pacing and realistic humor. The Descendants is definitely a movie to see for all dramedy lovers!

2. The Savages (2007)

R | 113 min | Comedy, Drama

85 Metascore

A sister and brother face the realities of familial responsibility as they begin to care for their ailing father.

Director: Tamara Jenkins | Stars: Laura Linney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Philip Bosco, Peter Friedman

Votes: 38,630 | Gross: $6.61M

For you more dedicated dramedy fans, The Savages gets everything right. The Savages takes a seemingly simple plotline and turns it into a rather moving, deep, and humorous movie about death, love, and family relationships all while leaving room for frequent darkly comic relief. What really makes The Savages so beautiful, however, is the extremely smart and refreshing dialog and the top notch performances of Hoffman, Linney, and Bosco.

3. Win Win (2011)

R | 106 min | Comedy, Drama, Sport

75 Metascore

A struggling lawyer and volunteer wrestling coach's chicanery comes back to haunt him when the teenage grandson of the client he has double-crossed comes into his life.

Director: Tom McCarthy | Stars: Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, Jeffrey Tambor, Bobby Cannavale

Votes: 55,261 | Gross: $10.18M

Made up of all the vital elements that form an average drama, Win Win takes a step beyond your average dramedy and becomes something so much more complex and pleasant. Win Win wins a point each for its quirky characters, witty script, likeable performances, and, by the end, has won over your heart. Win Win is a small, funny, and nearly flawless subtle dramedy that is completely irresistible, even to those who don't have as much an appreciation for dramedies as do others of us.

4. Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

PG-13 | 106 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

70 Metascore

A delusional young man strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet.

Director: Craig Gillespie | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, R.D. Reid

Votes: 155,373 | Gross: $5.97M

Let's face it, so maybe a lonely guy falling in love with a life sized doll isn't exactly what you would normally watch on a rainy afternoon, no worries, Lars and the Real Girl is an exception you won't be able to resist! Moving along an idea that would normally be used for a five-minute sketch at the most, Lars and the Real Girl succeeds so well in many ways you may not have expected. The performances are exceptional, but what makes Lars even better is the deep, raw emotion and the love and respect the town shows to Lars when he believes he's found his true love.

5. Lost in Translation (2003)

R | 102 min | Comedy, Drama

91 Metascore

A faded movie star and a neglected young woman form an unlikely bond after crossing paths in Tokyo.

Director: Sofia Coppola | Stars: Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Giovanni Ribisi, Anna Faris

Votes: 488,788 | Gross: $44.59M

For fans of Bill Murray, Lost and Translation is automatically a must see, but that's far from all that makes Lost in Translation so great! Being more on the end of a drama then a comedy, Lost in Translation still has some seriously funny moments. The performances are gold here, and the Tokyo city background is very likable. While some may say Lost in Translation is too slowly paced, I think the slow pace makes the whole movie realistic. For dramedy and regular drama lovers, Lost in Translation ranks as one of the best around!

6. Somewhere (2010)

R | 97 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

67 Metascore

After withdrawing to the Chateau Marmont, a passionless Hollywood actor reexamines his life when his eleven-year-old daughter surprises him with a visit.

Director: Sofia Coppola | Stars: Stephen Dorff, Elle Fanning, Chris Pontius, Erin Wasson

Votes: 46,697 | Gross: $1.77M

Also made Sofia Coppela (Lost in Translation), Somewhere is a very artsy, engrossing look at the life of a bored movie star who has just hit bottom. Somewhere is full of many long, extended shots where nothing is really happening, but in this way, Somewhere connects to us. The scenes between Steven Doriff and Elle Fanning are lovely and heartwarming. The performances are very good. Not being touched or moved in someway I would find hard to believe. Somewhere, while it may not seem like it at first, truly goes somewhere!

7. Get Low (2009)

PG-13 | 103 min | Drama, Mystery

77 Metascore

A movie spun out of equal parts folk tale, fable and real-life legend about the mysterious, 1930s Tennessee hermit who famously threw his own rollicking funeral party... while he was still alive.

Director: Aaron Schneider | Stars: Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek, Lucas Black

Votes: 24,026 | Gross: $9.18M

Get Low is a simple, dark humored dramedy that's based on a true story. The plot is very simple but unique, All the characters are in some way likable, And all the performances are very good. Get Low has a lot of smart, funny lines but lurking underneath the story are some dark tones as well as some unexpected plot twists. Get Low keeps the viewer fully engaged as well as makes them laugh, cry, and clap by the movies end, now how many movies can do that?

8. Dan in Real Life (I) (2007)

PG-13 | 98 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

65 Metascore

A widower finds out the woman he fell in love with is his brother's girlfriend.

Director: Peter Hedges | Stars: Steve Carell, Juliette Binoche, Dane Cook, Alison Pill

Votes: 106,986 | Gross: $47.64M

Being a more family-oriented movie, Dan in Real Life is a very funny, sometimes stressful, sometimes sad, but ultimately beautiful look at the life of a single dad trying to take care of three daughter, all at different stages of Life. While Dan in Real Life certainly isn't perfect, in that way, it reminds us of ourselves, and how we're not perfect. The best thing about Dan in Real Life is Steve Carrel, who gives a convincing performance as a single dad as well as makes us repeatedly laugh even at things we're not sure why is funny.

9. Broken Flowers (2005)

R | 106 min | Comedy, Drama, Mystery

79 Metascore

As the extremely withdrawn Don Johnston is dumped by his latest woman, he receives an anonymous letter from a former lover informing him that he has a son who may be looking for him. A freelance sleuth neighbor moves Don to embark on a cross-country search for his old flames in search of answers.

Director: Jim Jarmusch | Stars: Bill Murray, Jessica Lange, Sharon Stone, Julie Delpy

Votes: 106,797 | Gross: $13.74M

Broken Flowers is an admittedly odd, off-beat dramedy full of mostly dead-pan humor. While some may leave Broken Flowers feeling dry, those of us who truly enjoy dramedies will find plenty to like. Bill Murray's performance is excellent, as always, and every other character does a good job too. The ending may catch some viewers of guard but adds an interesting comic touch that tops of the movie perfectly. Dramedy fans, this is one dramedy you will never forget!

10. The Way Way Back (2013)

PG-13 | 103 min | Comedy, Drama

68 Metascore

Shy 14-year-old Duncan goes on summer vacation with his mother, her overbearing boyfriend, and her boyfriend's daughter. Having a rough time fitting in, Duncan finds an unexpected friend in Owen, manager of the Water Wizz water park.

Directors: Nat Faxon, Jim Rash | Stars: Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, AnnaSophia Robb

Votes: 156,838 | Gross: $21.50M

The Way, Way back, despite being a movie about a teen going on vacation with his widow mother and her mean boyfriend and he goes and works at a water park where he finds love, purpose and friends, don't sweat it! The way, way back isn't like all those other teenage soap-operas, it has a heart, maybe even a soul, and certainly a great sense of humor! Teenagers will love The Way, Way Back, but there's nearly just as much for adults to love too!

11. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

R | 108 min | Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi

89 Metascore

When their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever.

Director: Michel Gondry | Stars: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Gerry Robert Byrne

Votes: 1,077,743 | Gross: $34.40M

What we have here is a taste of style only acquired by certain dramedy fans, but if you love or if you hate it, either way, you will never forget it. Eternal Sunshine is filled with random, sometimes funny, scenes, unsavory characters, and a lot of whacky ideas. Despite being occasionally obnoxious, Eternal Sunshine really works well as a whole. It inspires frequent snickers, a few head scratches, but somehow, by the end, remains moving.

12. The Artist (I) (2011)

PG-13 | 100 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

89 Metascore

When George, a silent movie superstar, meets Peppy Miller, a dancer, sparks fly between the two. However, after the introduction of talking pictures, their fortunes change, affecting their dynamic.

Director: Michel Hazanavicius | Stars: Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell

Votes: 248,582 | Gross: $44.67M

For a while I was wondering how a silent, black and white film won best picture. When I finally got around to watching it, it all became clear. The Artist is an extremely well done movie that is much more engaging than many movies with sound. It maintains a quick pace and has superb performances from a lesser known main couple. The Artist is funny, very entertaining, and let's you appreciate the history of film making. The Artist is an instant classic!

13. Driving Miss Daisy (1989)

PG | 99 min | Comedy, Drama

81 Metascore

An old Jewish woman and her African-American chauffeur in the American South have a relationship that grows and improves over the years.

Director: Bruce Beresford | Stars: Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy, Dan Aykroyd, Patti LuPone

Votes: 117,535 | Gross: $106.59M

Driving Miss Daisy may not look it, but it is truly a knock-out of a movie! It's a very delicate, expertly designed, and has a very irresistible charm to it! The cast is perfect and the humor always mild which adds a nice touch to the movie. Driving Miss Daisy is very heartfelt in a so-happy-it's-sad kind of way. Along with all this, it explores themes of friendship, coming-of-old-age, racism, and religion all treated with such care to make it all fit together so perfectly. You certainly do not have to be a Dramedy lover to watch this movie. Dramedy fans will praise it, but ultimately, anyone who likes a good movie will simply crave it!

14. 500 Days of Summer (2009)

PG-13 | 95 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

76 Metascore

After being dumped by the girl he believes to be his soulmate, hopeless romantic Tom Hansen reflects on their relationship to try and figure out where things went wrong and how he can win her back.

Director: Marc Webb | Stars: Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Geoffrey Arend, Chloë Grace Moretz

Votes: 557,794 | Gross: $32.39M

(500) Days of Summer is a very unique, well made movie. (500) Days of Summer is made out of order and let's you piece together what happens. It is a little different than most movies because of this factor, also independent music, a random dance scene with a cartoon bird, and a strange voiceover and images of the main characters childhood make a agreeably odd movie. Not saying that (500) Days of Summer isn't a good movie. It's a good-odd movie that, once you get the hang of it, you aren't able to resist it!

15. King of California (2007)

PG-13 | 93 min | Comedy, Drama

63 Metascore

An unstable dad who after getting out of a mental institution tries to convince his daughter that there's Spanish gold buried somewhere under suburbia.

Director: M. Cahill | Stars: Michael Douglas, Evan Rachel Wood, Willis Burks II, Laura Kachergus

Votes: 23,660 | Gross: $0.26M

King of California is an oddly humorous movie on a teenage girl's father getting released from a mental institution, and convinces himself that there is an ancient treasure hidden under a warehouse. Michael Douglas gives a powerhouse performance here. Almost everything he does is funny just because of how he acts. King of California is very funny, almost too whacky for a dramedy but it still works. It mixes whacky humor with a treasure hunt and, before you know it, The movie flashes right by the screen!

16. The Weather Man (2005)

R | 102 min | Comedy, Drama

61 Metascore

A Chicago weather man, separated from his wife and children, debates whether professional and personal success are mutually exclusive.

Director: Gore Verbinski | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Hope Davis, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Caine

Votes: 83,308 | Gross: $12.48M

I'm not recommending The Weather Man to everyone. To fully appreciate The Weather Man you have to be extremely dedicated to the Dramedy genre. This dark satire on American life is not only painfully real, but also very funny in a relatable sort of way. Nicolas Cage and Michael Caine give acceptable performances, as well as the rest of the cast. The Weather Man is well written and entertaining enough for any dramedy fan who likes rather depressing satires.

17. Everything Must Go (2010)

R | 97 min | Comedy, Drama

65 Metascore

When an alcoholic relapses, causing him to lose his wife and his job, he holds a yard sale on his front lawn in an attempt to start over. A new neighbor might be the key to his return to form.

Director: Dan Rush | Stars: Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Christopher Jordan Wallace, Michael Peña

Votes: 53,135 | Gross: $2.71M

While Everything must go May prove too slow for some, there is still something absorbing about it. Everything Must Go stimulates on several levels. It's character development is well drawn, it has incredibly deep emotional depth, even while there may seem not to be any happy ending in sight. Will Ferrell is like you've never seen him before. His excellent portrayal of a disturbed, alcohol addicted, broken man is moving even powerful. And, yes, Everything Must Go leaves room for a great amount of humor too!

18. Midnight in Paris (2011)

PG-13 | 94 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

81 Metascore

While on a trip to Paris with his fiancée's family, a nostalgic screenwriter finds himself mysteriously going back to the 1920s every day at midnight.

Director: Woody Allen | Stars: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, Kurt Fuller

Votes: 449,813 | Gross: $56.82M

As with mostly all Woody Allen movies, the scripting is what you should look for the most! Midnight in Paris has an impressive cast and gives gorgeous, breathtaking shots of Paris. It could be a little bland for some, exspecailly those who may be unfamiliar with historical society and artists presented in the movie. Like I mentioned before, the dialog and the script is top notch, also, Owen Wilson gives a very likable performance here.

19. It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010)

PG-13 | 101 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

63 Metascore

A clinically-depressed teenager gets a new start after he checks himself into an adult psychiatric ward.

Directors: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck | Stars: Keir Gilchrist, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Dana DeVestern

Votes: 148,148 | Gross: $6.35M

It's Kind of a Funny Story is one of those teenage soap-opera movies you really wish you would hate, but it's charm is so irresistible you can't help but enjoy it. It's Kind of a Funny Story isn't expertly crafted like most of the other dramedies listed, however, if you are able to take a step out of your comfort zone, you May be surprised at what you find! The cast does a good job, the humor is hip and quirky, and the setting of an adult mental ward somehow all fit together very nicely and makes Its kind of a Funny Story a fun watch!

20. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

R | 122 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

81 Metascore

After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.

Director: David O. Russell | Stars: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver

Votes: 742,625 | Gross: $132.09M

Slightly annoying at times, though always entertaining, Silver Linings Playbook is an original mix of sports, family, romance, and... crazy people. The cast here is dynamite! Jennifer Lawrence is on fire! Silver Linings Playbook has a unique concept and ideas and all starts out well but takes a turn on the unrealistic side as it moves toward the end. Silver Linings Playbook is a worthy watch for all dramedy fans, who are all bound to have different opinions!

21. Good Will Hunting (1997)

R | 126 min | Drama, Romance

71 Metascore

Will Hunting, a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life.

Director: Gus Van Sant | Stars: Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 1,067,568 | Gross: $138.43M

Smart, charming, and frequently hilarious, Good Will Hunting has a lot going for it. It's well-written script is what makes it stand out the most, the acting secondly, and thirdly the strong character development, which is impressive because few movies get us to relate with the characters as much as Good Will Hunting! Most people who enjoy dramedies will agree at least that Good Will Hunting is well made, and other will love it!

22. Rachel Getting Married (2008)

R | 113 min | Drama, Romance

85 Metascore

A young woman who has been in and out of rehab for the past ten years returns home for the weekend for her sister's wedding.

Director: Jonathan Demme | Stars: Anne Hathaway, Rosemarie DeWitt, Debra Winger, Sebastian Stan

Votes: 51,218 | Gross: $12.80M

A beautiful Indie-Drama-Comedy about tragedy, marriage, and forgiveness, Rachel Getting Married will at least touch even the hardest of hearts and to others it may never leave them. Anne Hathaway is gives us an exceptional performance as a young woman who's lost her way in life and is conflicted with her dark past. Rachel Getting Married contains occasional humor, constant drama, and frequent tear-jerker scenes. Rachel Getting Married May not impress all audiences with its shaky, very realistic style of filming, but for others who open their heart, Rachel Getting Married will impact them in ways they won't be able to express!
